Nervous Wreck

Happy Nerve Year!! I hope yours was as good as or better than mine! (Reading books on the couch with Luke is one of my favorite things, so I mean that in the best way. <3 )

Pre-travel nerves runs in the family. My grandmother isn't in any of my dad's childhood vacation stories, because she'd get herself so wound up with worry before the trip that she'd just end up staying home sick.

I got my Grandma's stomach, so you can imagine what a post-holiday flight during a pandemic is doing to me. I'M NERVOUS!!

I knew I'd have to take January through mid-February off from Elephant Town, but I didn't have the heart to explain why, because it's so up in the air. Whether I fly out or not, I'll still be teaching this month (the whole reason I'm headed to Denmark), be it in person or over livestream from 3 am to 11 am (HNGNHHFHDXXGHH), so no matter what happens, the comic will be put on hold for a bit.

To make up for it, I'll be sharing all the $5 stuff with all tiers (except figure drawing), which includes the process shots for those paintings I wanna share with you!

Speaking of which, here are those paintings! They were gifts for friends and family.

These are a mix of watercolor, gouache, and acrylagouache, which I'm still getting the hang of. I'll explain them (and teach you how to seal a gouache painting... versus how ABSOLUTELY NOT to seal a gouache painting) in the process posts later. I almost ruined the second two. If you're getting into gouache, I wanna show you how to NOT RUIN IT at the end!!

As always, if you're here solely for Elephant Town and you want to lower your monthly pledge to the lowest tier or "follow" until it comes back, I fully support that decision! I don't want anyone feeling like they're being taken advantage of. If you know me, you know that by now.

I hope you all had a warm and safe holiday! Wish me luck navigating this nervous-ass week! (I leave Friday.) (Or not!) (WHO KNOWS?!?!)

That is EXACTLY what I wanted to know. Perfect. Thank you so very much. Also for all your great work. ❤️✍🏼

(this is a quick question so it's kind of a nice distraction, actually!) I use a screen cover from a brand called iCarez - dumb name, definitely not from an English-speaking country, but I LOVE the product! Cheaper and, imo, nicer than Paperlike, at least the ones I've tried. Hope that's helpful to you!

Danielle Corsetto

Yup— count me in on that! I start getting nervous, kinda shutting down creatively and mentally oh, say, three months before I go anywhere— as soon as I can “see” the month around the curve of the year if you know waht I mean. And on a different topic, have you ever heard of /tried the ipad screen cover “paperlike?” NO need to answer this if you’re totally slammed; it just looked so cool and satisfying to add texture to drawing on the screen, and i wondered if you had heard any reviews. Thanks either way! You’re the best.

I'm one of those nervous travelers too. I get so wound up I'm just about barfing getting on the plane.

Aahh, my heart breaks for you and anyone whose loved ones live over a border!

Danielle Corsetto

I wish you a safe and pleasant trip if you do go!

Solidarity. I live in Germany, my family is in the States. I have gone through that process several times of planning and canceling trips in the past two years. So nerve wracking!

Tuspa Mouse

(Oh and yes, they have a teachers' dorm for me, and I've got a combo hotel & AirBnB for Copenhagen.)

Danielle Corsetto

Yeah, for me it's like... I've barely left my zip code for two years, so I'm gonna throw all my eggs into this one basket, and in that basket I get paid very well to do my dream teaching job in a highly vaccinated country, and then visit my best friend and just stay in a hotel and work in between. How cool that you were born out there!! It's a very chill place, I love it. :)

Danielle Corsetto

Now I see that it's a ribbon!!! Duh. I guess it's a "you pays your money, you takes your chances" thing. You've got to do what's right for you. We can't live in fear forever. Do you have a place to stay lined up in Denmark? I visited DN once a few years ago (although I was actually born in Copenhagen). Totally fell in love with the country.

Ruth Merriam

Oh good question! The final painting is an ornament, so that's a bit of ribbon for it to hang from. :) Yeah, a lot of my friends have been coming down with it, too. But even the unvaccinated few have said the symptoms are mild. I know we don't want it spreading regardless, but it sounds like good news that the severity seems to have died down on this variant. I'll be tested twice before I go out, and I've been reassured that not only are the numbers super low at the school (and hospitalizations less frequent in the country), but there are testing sites everywhere, Danish resident or not.

Danielle Corsetto

Not to be a party pooper, but 7, count 'em, 7 of my fully vaxxed, boosted, mask-wearing and careful friends have caught omicron. Hubby and I are now ratcheting back all of our social stuff as the county's infection rate rises over 20%. No thankyew. We're old and don't wanna play. But as far as sticking around for just ET or whatever, that was a jest, yes? And another question. What's the burgundy snake thing in the third painting?

Ruth Merriam

ahhhh us and MAGFest =C I'd just cancel but we already avoid being near people + strict vaccination + mask-wearing + distancing policy = could easily be safer than stores...

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Ahh I'm sorry buddy!! Berlin is amazing, if you haven't been - I hope you get to make up for that trip especially in the future. But, also, all the rest of them. BOOOO.

Danielle Corsetto

I feel you. I love traveling, and my company sales kickoff was supposed to be in Berlin this year! Cancelled. And my first quarter trips to NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, LA, San Diego, and Austin, all got cancelled. It’s the right move, but I’m still lamenting what could have been. 🖕🏻🦠

Chris Driggers

Those are great paintings!

Fred Baker

Luckily the actual teaching is just 2 weeks, so it'd only kind of suck!! But thank you very much. I'll definitely eat all the licorice I can find in the States if I don't get to actually go.

Danielle Corsetto

Spending 6 weeks on Denmark time and not actually in Denmark would really, really suck. I hope you're able to travel safely. And if you can't travel, I hope you at least get some Danish food and pictures.

Wade Richards

Good luck! I never seal anything, because it only leads to more cat hair in the paint, in the long run. XD
