How To Make A Comic Strip!

Hey gang! I wanted to show you this little comics-making station I set up for the kiddos for Summertime at the Mill on Saturday.

My default is "autobio comics with cats," so I rolled with it  since it's fast and easy.

If you've been following my garbage garden (garden updates coming soon!), you know that I love reusing packing material & trash. This giant piece of shitty chipboard was the biggest flat surface I had in the house, so it became the base for my poster.

I was going to make 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-panel comics from scratch but then I realized there are NEWSPAPERS in my house, so I let the syndicated professionals do the job.

This poster was a good excuse to practice drawing Ollie and Pip!

I was helpfully informed by DC writer Karla Pacheco that what I call "pointers" most of the industry calls "tails" so I altered that later!

Pip didn't like this dig on him by Ollie so he took it out on the shitty chipboard later.

There was space in the middle for a gratuitous large drawing of m'boys, so...

Look how proud Pip is.

I papered the table below with leftover newsprint from a roll I nabbed at my newspaper job SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO.

(The yogurt containers aren't as old. Perfect way to separate pencils and pens!)

I wrote the directions right on the paper.

Gotta keep those communal erasers corralled.

I think I printed 30 of these three-panel templates. By the end of the day all of them had been used! Success! Here is by far the best comic strip (ever) made, by second grader Aeris.

I have since quit comics, no other comic will hold a candle to this, why try.

The event was super fun and I'll definitely be using this poster again in the future! It  might have more Pip bites in it next time.

Thanks for your patience with me last week! Planning for & promoting the event took quite a bit of time. I hope the four-page ET update made up for the wait a little. :)

How To Make A Comic Strip!

Comments

Such an awesome explainer and so good to give everyone permission to have a go. There are probably too many of us out there who rule ourselves out of trying without that sort of nudge. I love the positioning of Pips munches, alongside the pro-tip with Pip's fangs, and then the Lio strip where it appears they are staring at what Pip did, open-mouthed (fanged).

This is so awesome! My partner teaches calligraphy at ren faires and this has a very similar vibe to their style! <3

Theadora

Awesome! I probably will switch out the cats for my dog of course

Chelsea Watson

You can steal the idea!

Danielle Corsetto

Can I steal this for my class to do a comic drawing session?

Chelsea Watson

Steal it!!

Danielle Corsetto

This is so wonderful! I want to make a similar thing for my daughters, as they are showing interest in making comics.

Super great and i am totally stealing that idea for our next neughbourhbood street fest!!

I cannot imagine how much work this took to put together, you're so gooooood! (but truly, no one is as good as "Butts" by Aeris)

That's so freaking awesome! I enjoyed this so much.

This is a great display and instructional content! What a great way to give kids permission and encouragement to try something that they probably have little idea how to get started at! This kind of introduction and permission-giving is a skill all its own for any topic ๐Ÿ‘

Jason

Frame the butts art work. It is truly frame-worthy.

Beck Archer

I'm constantly impressed by the quality of Pickles! Also I'm getting very cozy with the idea of aging so I consider it RESEARCH.

Danielle Corsetto

That is so cool!!

Boum

I would not have pegged you as a Pickles fan.
