Elephant Town Chapter 7 (pages 6 & 7)

You definitely want to know what's on the menu. That's anticucho (beef hearts) on the grill; papa a la huancaína is the yellowy-colored potato discs next to the hard boiled eggs; and ceviche in a bowl next to it. Special thanks to my friend Renzo for guiding me on the cuisine!

I'm making all of this as soon as I get the ingredients. (I'm wondering if you have to go somewhere special for cow hearts? Or if it's one of those items that's always been at the grocery store and you've just never paid attention to it unless you're Peruvian.)

I love how much the tone of the whole party gets set by "c'mon we got a new game" and the following panel.

Publix (limited to SE USA) has beef hearts, usually near the "stew beef". Soooo good!

Theadora

I am too!

Theadora

The nice thing about beef heart is that it's really just big chunks of meat; unmarbled but not at all tough! I love it and am so glad to know that there are cultures which appreciate it! (I'm a SE USAdian, tried it on my own and no one I know personally knows any particular recipes for it; now I'll look up Peruvian cooking!)

Theadora

Pretty sure any international market has them... Lotte Plaza is our closest one, and Great Wall, though H Mart is a bigger franchise, I think

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Now I'm hungry.

Hugh Eckert

Yeah, I'm anxious for her. Id hate for her to get cold feet 🥺

Cat McAteer

Oh, man, now I really want Peruvian food! I love all of those things, esp the papa a la huancaína. Yum. (Also, congrats lol, I love that he told the family so they could have a big party!)

Amy Crook

If that isn't a "well, alrighty then" face in the last panel, I don't know what is. Sort of like when you have a baby and 2 weeks later you realize you can't give it back (only maybe a bit less sleep deprivation).

I cried at reading these pages! This is so like my Ozarks family. Yeah, stuff gets leaked out all the time and surprises are spoiled, but it makes the family all the more happy and excited. I do feel for Meighan, but I was one of the little kids so happy when a new member was going to be added, either by marraige or birth! Also, all the food! I just had to catch my breath, because for some reason this hit me hard in a good way.

Julie Howard

Am I the only one who's overwhelmed on Meighan's behalf? This is a LOT and she didn't even get to announce her news. As a person from a small family who has married into an ENORMOUS one, and gained many nieces and nephews as I did, I feel for her. It's good, but confusing and definitely overwhelming.

Salivating now. Looked up a recipe for anticuchos, and I'm wondering about local butchers, and their internal organ availability.

Pete Jordan

An Asian store would have them or any of the farmers around you selling beef should be able to sell it too. H Mart has many organs and parts I've never bought and don't know how to prepare. It's always nice when someone is accepted into the family.

Meisterj

If it's not written on a cake, it's not worth knowing!

The next time you’re in Portland, OR, treat yourself to a fancy lunch or dinner at Andina - just the most delicious Peruvian food!!!!
