Interesting! For me, "mom" & "mother" would only be the maternal figure closest to me, but I could use variations in other "languages" for other people without too much trouble. Of course, everyone is different.

Knowing that I was raised in a culture where the only person other than your mother whom you call "Mom" is maybe your second-grade teacher, by accident. And even there, if it happens more than once then somehow you're the only kid who doesn't get a meatball on Spaghetti Night...
