Meet Forrest!

This is what Forrest looked like for the first two days he came home! Also: for several hours after any loud sound occurs, especially the vacuum.

I've been sitting on this for a few days because I'm still not 100% certain his name is gonna be Forrest! But, that's the name he came with, and it's the name I've been calling him. So, for now, it's Forrest.

I'll make a little bonus post for you top-tier Whole Elephant patrons in a moment, in part to share with you the cool new brushes I used on this one (shoutout to Monica for recommending Max Packs!). I'll also kick in some extra sketches of The Cat Currently Known As Forrest, including the perfect name I picked for him that I realized I probably shouldn't name him after all. Stick around!

Oh! Also! I think this is the first time I'm using the "early access" option on a post. Basically this post will be made public in a few days (hello, followers!), which means if you're seeing this today - on Wednesday - you got to see it first because you're a paying patron.  Personally, I kinda like it when an artist I back shares something with us patrons first, and then I see it on Instagram a few days later. Is that something y'all like, too? Lemme know!

And when he scrambles across the floor because something spooked him, you can yell, "Run Forrest, Run!" and on nights when the two of you are cuddle up together, chillaxin', he can tell you that, "life is like a box of kitty treats . . . you never get all that you want." (and then he'll give you the "I've never been fed" look. "Why you make me starve, Momma?") :D

Thanks! I don't have a huge place so yeah, if I get a cat keeping the litter tray clean will be a v.v.big priority. Like I said, I'm probably still a year away. But I want to do all of the legwork so that when the time comes I can go right ahead without wondering if I've thought things through.

Replying to second Chris on the 90% there part! If you wanna skip the plastic liners, you can do what I do and just get those recycled paper litter boxes. I toss them every month or so (after cleaning them several times a day so they can last as long as possible). Fingers crossed that, like Forrest was, the cat you're destined to adopt is still adoptable when you're ready! <3

Maybe it's because I've always adopted adult cats, but I've found that "cat care" is a pretty simple concept. Feed them and give them a place to poop and you're 90% there. They're pretty self sufficient animals. And pop for the litter box liners so "cleaning the litter box" is basically lifting the trash bag-like liner out of the box and replacing, and most of the ick factor is gone. At that point the personality of the cat is going to determine how often and what kinds of interactions you have with it. I've always lucked out and gotten "puppy cats" (to the point where I used to take one of our Maine Coons for a walk around the neighborhood on a leash) so I'm giving them pettins daily, but I've seen cats that are way more aloof.

Oh, how neat! I realized a couple of months ago that I've progressed another step or two along a twelve point scale that ends with my getting a cat. Inner Dad Voice ("Be responsible") had a talk with Inner Kid Voice ("I'm EXCITED about this...let's DO it!!") and it was agreed that further self-education on cat care, as well as the socking-away of an emergency cat medical fund, would be necessary before the proposal can be seriously considered. Efforts are underway. But in the meantime, I've bookmarked the gallery of kitties available at the shelter a couple of miles away.

Oooh I like those parameters!

I would also say Thank You for the post. The pieces of Forrest in the pictures reminds me a little bit of Pip. But I thank, that's only the few pieces we can see here. ;o)

FWIW, my partner and I like to come up with cat names that we think they could say, and I think "Forrest" fits that bill. 🤗 And I'd also love to hear the "perfect name that's probably a bad idea". 😁

Theadora

Thank you for this post. It's like a Forrest puzzle, put all the pieces together and you'll get the whole picture/cat. :-)

I also like the early access approach (a number of comics I support do this). I get the pleasure of reading things twice!

William Cole

Haha, a buddy named their cat "Heidi" because she would always be HIDING

The joy of cats is that it doesn't matter what you name them, they rarely come to it when called. :) I do love getting "sneak peaks" as a Patron, it makes me feel special!

Hahaha these shots are so "new cat" and remind me of my kitties when we first adopted them. Aw. <3

I'm a little ambivalent about his current name as I've got a cousin also named Forrest. Now I'm awfully curious to know what you came up with! Thank you for the early bird goodies that you post here. This is pretty much the only place I'm certain to catch your work in any consecutive fashion.

Ruth Merriam

Hi, Forrest! When we got our first two cats, all I saw of one of them for a week or so was two huge yellow eyes behind the washer (void kitty).

Hugh Eckert

Aww... hello Forrest. You've found a good place to live. <3

Lesley Mitchell

I like the early access idea, the preview is a nice bonus, like seeing Elephant Town early when you post on insta the next week. Nice elements of a cat you have there. Hopefully he'll warm up to you and Pip soon.
