Studio Tour Livestream! How should I do it??

TL;DR: I'm doing a live virtual studio tour just for patrons this weekend, scroll down and vote on the stuff you want!

Hey gang! If you like watching livestreams, or you like making livestreams, this post is for you! I need your help.

Before lockdown, I was chosen to be included in this year's Over The Mountain Studio Tour. Every November, about a dozen local artists in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia open their studios to the public for a weekend. Art lovers come for the weekend to visit the artists they like, both to purchase their art and to check out their workspace, with the opportunity to ask the artist about their craft (and sometimes, to watch the artists at work).

This year, of course, our tour will be virtual. The "Old Guard" studio tour artists have never done this before. So I offered to play guinea pig and do a virtual studio tour for my patrons, because I figured you guys wouldn't mind being guinea pigs as well. ;)

But... I know literally nothing about livestreaming. I'm not even sure if it's one or two words. So I need your opinions on:

I especially need help with the livestream platform! We have a few requirements:

The poll starts with which day & time you'd prefer (I'll be doing it this week!). You can choose as many of the options below as you'd like, so go nuts and be honest! Also please feel free to elaborate in the comments below.

Thanks so much for your help, team!! I think this'll be fun. :)

That is SO HELPFUL, thank you!!

Youtube does auto ones, if you upload it there. You'll definitely want to double check it (it can come up with some really interesting suggestions) , but it does make it a bit easier. I personally use Screencast-O-Matic for video editing, including captioning, because I find it easier to use than YouTube, but it does have a cost associated with advanced features. Let me know if you want a demo of that!

I wanna insert a gif so bad! So excited for you all!! 🥰

NJGR

Oooh I like that upvote idea! I'll look into it, thanks!

Danielle Corsetto

I'd forgotten all about that, thanks Jeanne! I'll look into it.

Ahh cool, the guys from Pencil to Pencil used something like that! As for Pip's new sibling, he's got one more vaccine booster to get in a few weeks before we can adopt, but I think that should warrant its own dedicated livestream when it happens!

Danielle Corsetto

Aahhh I wish I knew how to do that speech-to-text thing for a different platform! When we settle on a video platform, I'll search to see if there's an easy way to do it. Unfortunately I know I won't have time to translate it myself, I'm sorry! Thanks for your input, I wouldn't have thought of it on my own!

Danielle Corsetto

I love your learning style, Danielle! Oh, and somehow, somewhere, I want to see a guinea pig for the 'guinea pig livestream'. I believe we know someone in town who could help.....(wink)

I'm also in Europe so I voted for watching the recording, but realistically early/mid-afternoon your time can work. I can also recommend Jitsi Meet as a free tool, although I've only used the meeting function before, not the streaming. It's super easy to connect to, you can use an app or any browser, no registration needed.

You're probably going to get too many platform suggestions, but I had a great experience with Crowdcast as a participant! The stream was for an author's book tour and it had both a chat and a questions feature where you could upvote questions other people asked that you wanted answered. I don't know what the price point is since I wasn't organizing it, though.

You might check out OneClickChat - local author Alan Gibson is the CEO (maybe?) it is supposed to be easier to use than Zoom but you can find him on FB or email at alan@abgibson.me

As a substitute to Zoom, there's Jitsi Meet: completely free and allows you to also stream to YouTube (for free) and record. You could have people join via either one, I believe. It's also easier to join than Zoom, if you can believe that. And I have something to add! I would love to see Pip's new matching sibling on your studio tour! ;) -j

Captions/subtitles! I know there’s a way to AI them on both FB & YT, but I’m not well versed. On IG there’s a way to do it simply by using the speech-to-text on your phone keyboard, but I don’t know if it would apply. Either way, a transcript after for us deafies would be fab.

Luke just brought that up with me and I feel like a dumdum! I wouldn't mind getting a paid version of Zoom (depending on the price). I guess because I keep picturing Zoom as a video sharing site (and myself as a viewer rather than a host), I had a hard time imagining it being used this way. Thanks honey! <3

I had never heard of UTC before, interesting! I was surprised that there's only a 7-hour time difference between us, since I know most of Europe is 6 hours... buuut then I looked at a map. I blame American public schools, and/or that I was out sick for a week of geography in 5th grade and for some reason never had to make it up!

Danielle Corsetto

My vote for platform is Zoom, but that’s also because it’s what I’m most used to. There are some capping issues with Zoom and time restraints so you’ll want to consider that. Aside from seeing YOU & PIP, I’d also love to see your beautiful yard!

Just saying hi from Russia, and anything as plausibly UTC+3 as possible would be the best. =)

Thanks for all the input, Jazz! I'm thinking an hour and a half to two hours max for the tour, and as someone recommended earlier in the comments, it might be wise to hold off and do a workshop later. I'm thinking I'd have my pencils ready to ink, and show the first few stages of inking live, since I'm going about it a bit differently these days. As far as questions go, that's about what I'd planned! Hope you can make it!

Danielle Corsetto

Ooh that's a cool aspect. I don't know how I'd show it, yeah... that'd be easier to just talk about out loud, though. :)

Danielle Corsetto

Ooo this is a really good point! I may do a separate poll asking how long it should be; I think I could do about an hour and a half and be happy. I was thinking, for the actual Studio Tour event in November, I'd like to do a fun tour on one day, and if I do a workshop, it'd be the next day. So maybe I'll do the workshop on a separate day - more time to plan it, too! Thanks for your input, Lauren!

Danielle Corsetto

It would be fun to see progress on something if possible. If not the actual drawing even showing the steps, thumbs/planning, pencils, inks, final would be interesting. I've seen much of that for your work but others could be newer to the comic process. Maybe showing what you use for illustration vs comics or how planning is different. Or showing your studies to show/discuss planning. How long of a stream will it be? So people can know what to plan for. And during the stream itself you may want to plan for questions, every 10-15 min so you can get through a thought but answer 1 or 2 questions when they're relevant and having a longer q&a at the end. Whatever happens, good luck and I hope you have fun! I hope I can check it out live, otherwise, I'll be happy to catch it after

This might not be applicable for Elephant Town, but recollecting other projects (ie coloring GWS), could we see how you work with other artists/colorists? Not sure if there's anything to actually "see" as part of that kind of workflow or if there's anything active to show off/explain but that could be really cool!

I voted to just watch and not participate, but I would totally pay for a single workshop if you led one! About an hour is all I’m good for on these virtual events, so I wouldn’t stack in both types of events unless you’re looking to fill time. Thanks! This is exciting!

Honestly, as long as I get to see at least a little bit of Pip, I'll watch the entire thing live, as long as I'm at home.
