Hourly Comic Daaaaaay!!

I was flying home all day Saturday, February 1st, which was Hourly Comic Day! I've never been awake for so many hours on Hourly Comic Day before. Which just means more panels, yaaaaay here we go!

(I think Air France was on strike?)

(My tea was also on strike.)

Someone on Insta just informed me that this magical rainbow circle is called a "glory!" Let's try not to focus on the fact that it's shaped like a hole.

And gluten-free meals have gotten REALLY good by now.

I keep telling Pip how much I missed him, then informing him that I don't mean it, I didn't miss him, but I do like him very much. Emotional transparency is an important element of bonding with your pets!

I missed cooking whenever I want to the most urgently. My AirBnB was hella cheap, which is the only reason I could stay for as long as I did, but there was some... miscommunication with my hosts about cooking. They didn't want me in the kitchen when they were in the attached living room, and I didn't realize they would be in the attached living room every day from 6 til midnight.

Anyway.

I did everything on my missed-list yesterday and I feel great.

I couldn't find that delicious dark chocolate + licorice before I left, boooo! But I'm glad I had one of them while I was still in town.

Extreme valley girl voice on that last one.

My seat neighbor was so nice! His 12-year-old daughter wants to be an artist. He showed me a digital drawing she did of a dragon, and I told him that she had a natural grasp of color theory that I didn't have. I wasn't blowing smoke up his ass, that was a good fuckin dragon!

I only took a 45-minute nap the whole trip, pretty proud of myself.

If anyone has texture brush recommendations (especially soft-edged ones), I'm all ears!

I'm so on the fence about whether I should make this book entirely digitally. It seems dumb that I want to essentially pencil everything to near-completion and then re-draw it on paper, but... I love drawing on paper so much! Time will tell. (A small amount of time; spring is coming up fast!)

WORTH IT.

Anybody who's flown internationally into Dulles knows how fuckin cheesy the reception area is. It's like Yanni and FFA had a video baby.

From this point on I kept asking Luke what time it was because I was too loopy to bother changing my watch, but he avoided the question half the time so these next few hours are guesses.

I got a few 100 Gecs fans piping up in the comments of this one! WOO

I clipped the stupid baby knives that had grown on both cats first thing the next morning. Too late for that shower curtain, though.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

At the grocery store in Viborg I kept getting the message "paperslut" when I tried to print out a sticker for my bulk candy purchase (don't judge my licorice love). Dan Berry and I had a good laugh over that one.

Hope you enjoyed all these! I skipped two days' worth of normal daily drawings since I spent so much time making these things.

Also I hope you don't mind that I put these up on Instagram before I posted them here! Right after I put them on Insta I started making this Patreon post, and then basically fell asleep and woke up at 5:30 am. I guess jetlag is still a thing in my body.

I made a few little tweaks to the ones I'm posting here, so you're getting the slightly better version anyway.

Did any of you do Hourly Comic Day?? Or do you have a favorite one that you followed? Share that shit in the comments below! (Also lmk if these images came up wonky for you! I'm hoping the separate panels made this easier for everyone to view.)

Hourly Comic Daaaaaay!!

Thanks for checking them out. I liked how that one came out. It was boring to draw myself again just looking at my phone, again.

Meisterj

haha and also make sure you didn't leave an exacto knife in your pen bag, or an india ink pot or anything like that. (i've definitely pulled out my pen bag on the plane, rummaged for the pen I want and found an exacto and quickly shoved it to the bottom)

Sheri Spangenberg

YESSSSS I had to make sure all of my pens (especially the fresh Zebra ones) were in my carry-on luggage.

Danielle Corsetto

(Aaahh yours were great, I love the eyes-glued-to-phone panel!)

Danielle Corsetto

Ooohh sweet, thanks J!! And yeah, I'm always a little jealous that so many people manage to be minimal while still making theirs feel SO complete. Also there are so many FUNNY ones?! I feel like mine are just kinda mildly-amusing observations! I'm gonna make a note for next year to let myself make more jokes. ;)

Danielle Corsetto

Hahaha exactly!!

Danielle Corsetto

WAAAAHHH COOOOOL

Danielle Corsetto

OOHH thank you so much!! Yeah, Mel's pencil work OFFICIALLY BAFFLES ME.

Danielle Corsetto

There are only a few artists that I specifically try to find their hourly comics this time of year (and you're included in that group), but the #1 I always look for first is Mel Gillman's work. There is just something about their pencils that is visually pleasing to me, and I am greedy for so many in a 24-hour period. I mean: https://twitter.com/melgillman/status/1223811013688070145?s=20

Yours still look way nice. I did teeny tiny one shots in ball point, you can catch them on insta https://www.instagram.com/p/B8DWB2TjURb/?igshid=1vhai43gbho0b and https://www.instagram.com/p/B8DWVtajGrs/?igshid=1wcko5xk90h5y for my whole day. I'm still jealous of how good other's comics look every year.

Meisterj

I want to see the hand-drawn style you were developing for the book with all your cool backgrounds, but otoh I also really really want the book done this century so you should do what works best with your, uh, workflow.

Amy Crook

yes, cutting them up made it perfect, and Hourly Comic day is always on the first of Feb, which next year will be on a Monday, because of leap year. This was well done, as all your stuff is. If it were me, and it isn't, I would pencil it all on paper, and do the inks on the computer, or ipad. I know what you mean about hand drawing, on paper.

Laura J Testa-Reyes

Will do. Doubt it'll be as cool as Vancouver Airport. Nothing like being greeted by Raven as you arrive: https://flic.kr/p/2aCbpzN

Hugh Eckert

Lemme know how you like it, upside-down-smiley-face!

Danielle Corsetto

I haven't flown internationally into Dulles since 2010, but I'm going to this year... so I guess I get to have the whole cheese-tastic experience...

Hugh Eckert

OOH! The pizza-- excuse me, "pizza" thing! Here's your go-around: ask for the gluten-free meal. The flaky-crust thing I had was downright DECADENT compared to that unapologetic disk my nice seat neighbor got. And the rest of the GF meal is usually just fine, too - they're getting better about avoiding bread substitutes (which are usually gross). My meal was, I think, sweet potatoes with chicken in Mexican spices. Totally normal meal (not "special," just coincidentally gluten-free), and delivered earlier than everyone else's. The only thing you generally miss out on when you order a GF meal is a) bread and b) if there's a delicious dessert, you might not get it. If you're willing to give those up, go with the GF option.

Danielle Corsetto

We usually do an overseas trip every year and I swear, you'd think I was packing for a hike through the mountains if you looked in my carry-on. I drink a lot of water because I get horrifically dehydrated while flying (so much fun climbing over people to get to the head), and I cannot stop nibbling. I'll even eat stuff on the meal tray that doesn't tasted good because I can't stop myself. Seriously, wtf is up with that? LOL And OMG, that "pizza" thing they try to serve on the final hour of the trip home of every freaking flight for us. What an abomination. That's where I draw the line. That being said, some airline food has really improved. Just don't ever buy an a la carte sandwich on the flight if you're traveling from London to Berlin. Get something ahead of time and take it with you. I <3 Heathrow.

Ruth Merriam

(I *think* it's always Feb 1st?)

Danielle Corsetto

Mmm I dunno... look it up! And then tell me. :p

Danielle Corsetto

Always on groundhogs day?

DO IIIIITTT!! The only reason I remember is because I always make a note on my calendar a year in advance when I see everyone else doing it. Write it down!! :D

Danielle Corsetto

In my case, I'm usually not even hungry! It's just the constant fear that I won't be able to get a gluten-free, cheese-free meal anywhere (cheese makes me FAAAAAART)... which is silly, because my backpack was FILLED WITH SNACKS.

Danielle Corsetto

I need to finally participate in this next year.

Uggghhhhh. . .flying home from overseas. . . At least you're near a hub airport. Welcome to a week of jetlag and trying to get your head back in the right time zone. Love your drawings and yeah, what is is about flying that makes a person so damned *hungry*?

Ruth Merriam

These are so great!!!

Boum

it was one of the awesome things about amtrack. I know train takes so much longer than flying, but you get SO MUCH ROOM, the rows are only two across, and I could art the whole train ride without anyone getting up in my business! also less concern over what art supplies are packed

Sheri Spangenberg

I''m laughing forever at "who could it beeee".

Nancie

Bluuurggghh I'm always worried I'll get that kind of neighbor! I failed to mention up there that while I missed the American nosiness, I was also MEGA GRATEFUL to not have it while I was working out of the AirBnB; I got SO MUCH DONE uninterrupted!!

Danielle Corsetto

You got the actually cool interested art neighbor! One time I was doing water colors on the plane when flying alone, and the guy next to me not only was all manspreading into my space, he kept asking condescending questions like "So, what's all this about?" "...it's a robot?" "...well I got that much! What else?" Apparently having headphones on, watching a movie while doing art wasn't enough "i am not here to talk to you" signals.

Sheri Spangenberg

Sush! 😂. My wife calls it “Sush-a-roo”!
