Caricature Week Day 1!!
Added 2019-11-26 16:19:09 +0000 UTCHey and hello! I'm back home after spending a week in Memphis for this year's International Society of Caricature Artists convention, my favorite week of the year!
The week starts off with registration and breakfast on Monday, after which we storm the ballroom of whatever hotel we're infesting for the next few days with our gear. We set up our art supplies, take pictures of people we want to draw, and settle in to draw through Tuesday, Wednesday, and most of Thursday. Each of us (there are usually 200 artists, from around the world) has a long, skinny section of the wall taped off to hang our artwork up on. By Thursday afternoon, everyone has their art up on the wall and we vote on the best ones in divisions such as best black-and-white, best color, best body situation, best abstract, most innovative, etc. We take a much-needed breather on Friday, and that night after all the votes have been tallied, we have an awards banquet.
There are also workshops throughout the week ($5 patrons, you'll see some of the figure drawing one I went to soon!), but for the most part, we're just a bunch of excited dorks drawing and painting and sculpting and eschewing sleep to make as many drawings as we can before Thursday afternoon.
This year I baked myself a bunch of banana muffins and mini quiches that I could microwave for breakfast & lunch. This seems trivial but acquiring food is always a huge timesuck and I wanted to get as many paintings done (and workshops attended) as I could!
After the awards banquet, everyone takes their art off the walls and gifts it to the person they drew. Which is my favorite part. :)
I'm making this post public, because I forgot that I have non-patrons who are still following these updates (HELLO I SEE YOU <3<3<3); process shots for the other four drawings will be available for $1 and up over the next few days! I figured I wouldn't overwhelm you with ALL OF THEM AT ONCE, that's a lot to scroll through!
