Laura Mae Watercolor Poster

Had a fun weekend fiddling with this poster design for my old pal Laura Mae Socks's record release show this coming weekend!

If you're in the area this Saturday and you like old-style country music, drop in! The Folly is a pretty magical place. :)

Also if you have any frisket/masking fluid advice, I'm all ears! Boy oh boy do I have bad luck with this stuff. The yellow-colored fluid was an old Dick Blick brand that I should've known better than to use, but the blue one is Schminke which is a pretty high-end brand from what I can tell? It may just be the paper I was using; it was pretty soft. Anyway some lessons were learned, and here are a few of them:

Feel free to add to this list, those of you who are mask-savvy! <3

Despite all my fuck-ups, including smearing purple paint across her face and trying to write "record record show" (I was listening to ComicLab and not paying attention to what I was writing), I'm really happy with how this turned out. :)

Just got a bunch delivered to me to post around town and then sell afterwards! If we have any left after the show, they'll be up for y'all to purchase first, as always. :)

masking fluid would probably ruin a calligraphy nib, i'd imagine. it would be awfully hard to get it fully clean afterwards!

A nib would probably not do as good of a job since nibs come to a point a finer or give a flat line. An embossing stylus as a "ball" at the end instead of a point.

Is that like a calligraphy pen nib? If not, could you just use one of them?

What was it that Bill Cunningham used to say? "If I don't let them pay me, they can't tell me what to do!" and "Money is cheap. Freedom, that's the most expensive thing."

Oh wow... an embossing stylus might be good! The metal ends might make things so much easier. My color shaper has these hard fibers at the end they don't clean off easily.

Thanks Cathi! I take on pro-bono projects like this for friends when I want to use them as a learning experience; I figure the pressure's off when you're not getting paid for it, so it's the perfect excuse. :) Win-win!

Oooh that is very smart, thank you much! I watched a YT video that recommended an embossing stylus? Still seems like more hassle than it's worth, but I'll give a whirl at some point.

I was advised to store the masking fluid bottle upside down. This way, when you turn it right side up to open and use, the... stuff? What's in masking fluid?... hasn't settled at the bottom. You can stir it to mix easier this way. I use a color shaper that came with my fluid. I still don't like using it (or masking fluid in general), but it's better than a brush. There's gotta be a better way to use this stuff... :|

If I'd only seen the digital, I would have thought it was great, but the analog is fabulous. Also envious of your ability to work through issues and not just ditch it - I need to be better at this (in life, I'm no artist).

Gorgeous! Love seeing the details, thank you!

That's SO pretty!!! PRINTZ PLZ

Aahhh that is fascinating, thank you for the tip (hah), Cat!!

Hey Danielle. One of the best ways to apply masking fluid for fine details is with a yarn needle with the pointy end stuck in a cork. The needle's eye acts like a pen nib and is easy to clean and the cork makes it easier to hold.

wow!
