High School Hazelnuts #1: My Car Shakes

Soooooo... some things changed from early Hazelnuts to later Hazelnuts and GWS! In this old strip I did in 1998, Hazel has a father figure of some sort... and I think those are the prototypes for Jamie and Reese in panel one.

(I'll have to share some art from college when we get to the end of this series; I drew Hazel and Jamie into a few college art projects, and they were VERY different back then as well!)

This strip was definitely based in reality; I used to race people on the highway with my parents' minivan. I don't know how, but strangers frequently sought me out on the road and signaled to me that they wanted to race. I uh, never won, but at least I never crashed! Don't race on the highway, kids.

Btw, the hand-written date under this strip is wrong; I was entering my first year of college in October of 1999, so I must've mistaken the year. This was printed in October of 1998, as I settled into my final year of high school.

"Reickel Sydnications" is not only misspelled, it's made up; Mister Reickel was our busy journalism club leader and my favorite English teacher.

I could only find four of my old high school Hazelnuts strips, so we'll enjoy all of them this week before we move on to the newer Hazelnuts! These were all drawn with Microns on regular printer paper, as you do when you're seventeen years old.

HAH, I hadn't considered that! I imagine they pick up an awful lot of us Americans right over the border for suddenly driving 90 mph when we see a 90 kph sign. ;)

I forgot this was in mph and I was confused 'cause the speed limits on Canadian highways is 90 KPH (which is like 60 mph I think) so it didn't sound like a lot haha

I identify with Hazel in this one. 'doh!
