My College Job

And to think, these days I tell y'all about my period at least once out of every four #TMITuesday.

You may see more of these little autobio comics from now on! I'll make some strips (like this one) public, but if you're a patron in any tier ($1/month or more), you'll see all of them.

The more exciting reason I've started doing these (and forgive for repeating myself to some of you) is that I finally, finally have a new project I want to work on. But it's going to take at least two years to create - it's a graphic novel, not a comic strip this time - and I need to pay my bills while I'm working on it.

So I'm setting a monthly goal amount that'll cover my bills, and if I can keep it up every month, I'll work on the new project AND make these little autobio comics at the same time. (Most of them will be shorter than this, but some of them beg to be several scroll-swipes long.)

If the goal can't be met, I'll come up with something else to feed me & the cats while I work... but I figured this is the most fun option for everyone involved, so why not try it first. :)

That said, if you're a patron, please don't feel obligated to raise your pledge! I'll be making a more broad announcement tomorrow; the ideal solution would be a lot of people playing a little. I've always made it a goal to try lower pricepoints before exploring alternative routes.

And if you're a new patron, welcome! We're currently revisiting my old college strip, Ramblers at the $3 level, so if you're pledging $3 or more, please feel free to click the "ramblers" tag  to catch up first. (The pledge levels and descriptions are in the right-hand column, if you're reading this on a desktop.)

I've got a handful of strips thumbnailed & ready in a notebook. Some are little tiny things that have crossed my mind over the years, recent moments, stories about my cats, childhood memories, slices of my weird little life. Let me know if you think of something that interests you - something you'd like to hear my opinion on, a story I've teased at in the past but never concluded, a topic you like reading about - and I'll see what I can come up with. :)

Thank you, as always, for supporting me here. I hope I can ramp up my appreciation for y'all this year, in the form of new comics.

"How do you come up with your ideas" is probably the most common unanswerable question cartoonists get! I don't know how I'd explain it. But creation of characters would be fun. :) Thanks!!

Yeah, remember looking at the dates and thinking, wow, that must have been quite a fast pace ... and that sounds like an experience in Toronto ... hey, one more thought regarding autobio strips, maybe do something on the creation of characters, ideas, if you have such a process -- regardless, good luck & best wishes ...

!!! Thank you, that means a lot. <3

Please do, Danielle, I would definitely be a buyer.

I am a big Eisner and Pekar fan, and this is so In keeping with what I like (without being derivative) that I could read these all day. Glad I am a patron.

AGREED!! I have a very personal story I'd like to draw one day explaining how it took me until just a few years ago to realize that being on my period isn't something I should feel bad about. There are a lot of dudes out there who've been taught that it's acceptable to be upset when their girlfriend is menstruating during, say, a romantic weekend vacation. I couldn't believe how long it took for me to realize how selfish and sexist it is for someone who isn't even the one bleeding or cramping to treat such a thing as an inconvenience to THEM! Thanks for your support, man. :)

I honestly feel this should be more normalized. This shouldn't be considered as TMI. It's a natural body function over which you have no conscious control over and so feeling ashamed or shy about it should not be the natural social reaction. This is not a statement towards you in particular but I'm just voicing my opinion? :) :)

Oh, yeah - I really like the art, particularly the 1st 3 drawings.

The first time I saw a tampon was a used one on the sidewalk while walking downtown with my parents (I think I was 9 or 10). I asked what it was. Mom hesitated a bit and said it was part of a woman's underwear. I suppose that's true in a manner of speaking.

AL! You really threw me for a loop there for a minute!

Danielle Corsetto

Can you say "Toxic Shock Syndrome"? I'll never use them...oh, wait: I'm a guy. Never mind.

Well that's entirely reasonable!

There's my TMI Tuesday; I don't use tampons (that should really be its own strip at some point - it's been a fascinating journey to figure out why it bothers me so much). So not only did I not have any, I was worried that if I tried them for the first time, I'd do it wrong and suddenly there'd be a pool of blood where I'd been sitting! Thanks for the art model solidarity. :)

Danielle Corsetto

Thanks a lot, Ian!!

I've considered that before, thanks!! It's funny, that trip was SUCH a whirlwind that I'd have little to write about. But then, this is one of the things I'd like to cover with these autobio strips - trips and events that were fairly significant, but that I can't quite justify filling a whole book with. I went to Toronto in 2015 for a month with no phone/no internet, and while it was a REALLY neat experience, I can't decide if it's worth making into a whole book. Might just share snippets here instead. :)

These are nothing but paper! I used Photoshop to clean up and do a little moving around, but these are on loooong sheets of bristol. I'm thinking about making them available for sale with a coupon code for $5+ backers. :) And thank you for your sweet words!

Danielle Corsetto

As an art model myself, this amuses me. But really, you can just use a tampon and tuck the string away. It's never been an issue for me, personally. >.> And everyone should try standing UTTERLY STILL for like, 10 minutes. It's really hard! And everyone always thinks it's such an easy job!

I know it's an echo from other comments; but I really love this style of artwork / storytelling / ... the shading is wonderful, too :)

First, good luck with your graphic novel -- hope it goes well ... I recently finished a Girls with Slingshots volume and saw in the back that you went on a road trip to celebrate the anniversary of Girls with Slingshots -- so I was thinking it might be interesting/cool to read about any thoughts you had about places you've visited, culturally or just random musings ... just a thought ...

Patrick McEvoy

I love the style of this. The mixture of boxed and open art; the way the perspective changes like a movie. It's a fascinating little vignette and it's so personal I almost feel bad for looking. Are these purely digital, or is there paper involved? Because I can see there being a huge demand to 'own an original', particularly if you don't think you'll put them out in book form. Keep up the good work, missy! :o)
