What do you want in the last two GWS books?

Hello, fellow sweaters! Or maybe you're not sweating; maybe you're south of the equator, or in far north Canada or Finland. But over here on the 39th latitude, it's just barely tolerable to leave the house after 10 am.

Which is fine by me, because miraculously this old house has central air, and I'm busy working hard on the contents for the last two softcover GWS books!

Of course, I need a little help. These final two books are going to be moderately lean - I don't have as much bonus material for the backs as I did in the first five books - but I'd love some help picking out what to include!

I'd especially like some feedback on the "How to Draw" tutorials. I always include a how-to for two different characters per book; can you help me pick out four of the characters that haven't been included yet? We still haven't drawn:

Of that list, whom would you like to learn how to draw?

Also, I was thinking about including a few slides from the Illustration II class I taught this year. Do you think that'd go over well?

If you have Opinions, share them in the comments below!

Thanks for the tips. And, you're very welcome.

That's awesome to hear, Danielle! I'll definitely keep an eye out for that. Thank you!

Good question! Books 6, 7, and 8 are available (and I believe 7 & 8 are in abundance). We're trying to get rid of our existing volumes 2-5, and I believe they're all already out at the online store - I have a few copies of each that I'll be bringing with me to SPX this fall. The reason is that we're planning to put together a giant hardcover collection of the first 1,000 strips (collected in books 1-5) next year! It'll be cheaper to buy the hardcover than it would have been to buy the first five softcover, so there's that. :) I'll be keeping everyone in the loop about progress on that hardcover via the GWS newsletter (I only send one out every month or so), so if you're not already on that, here's where you can sign up! http://girlswithslingshots.us10.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=0484d6943eaf6538197e3dbad&id=86650c560b (Apparently Mailchimp updated the old signup page to this RIDICULOUS-LOOKING one that I was halfway finished with! Ha!!)

I'd like to see how to draw Ghost Kitty and Gabby. I think that anything you include that is instructional is a great idea. On a related note, is it possible to get all of the previous books somehow? I admittedly don't have any and not all are on your site.

Erik Hawkinson

I will DEFINITELY be doing signed copies! If not signed directly, then bookplates at the least. :)

Hmmm... Book 9 cover: Paranormal Halloween Book 10 cover: Thea & Mimi's Wedding, or Roadtrip. (Sorry. Much as I love Clarice, Joshua makes my skin crawl.) How to draw: Any of... Darren, Ghost Kitty, Melody or Sloth Erin. But first choice has to be Carol! How to draw Danielle would be cool though!!! :o) I think all the illustration posts you've done over the year have been fascinating (and I can't draw for toffee!), so any of that would be great. One last thing - any chance of a 'Team photo' in Book 10? One sketch including all the main characters... in the bar, human pyramid, doing the conga... something like that. Whatever you end up doing, it'll be great. (You will be doing signed copies, right? Right?

Ooh, thanks Bob! I love the then-and-now idea; writing that down!

Danielle Corsetto

Ghost kitty! And I agree about hazel and goopy of the cover. Do you want to include a then-and-now retrospective, some of the stuff you've done since, to show the progression of your style?

Bob Scheid

Hmm. Well, it might make sense to wait... ideally I'd love for a leather-bound hardback omnibus of the whole thing, but I'm almost certain that's just wishful thinking. Hell, I want every book I own to be a leather-bound hardback.

One of the assignments we had in the character design class I took online last year was to draw teenagers, actually! I'm not stellar at it, but my tips would include smooth lines, MINIMAL lines (especially on the face), and bigger eyes than a regular adult human. Perhaps a bigger forehead as well, but be careful not to give preteen boys a receding hairline! Thanks for the feedback!

Danielle Corsetto

Oh, I forgot to ask you guys about the covers! That list is just the list of possibilities - I don't know what I'm putting on the front yet. I'm drawn to the idea of putting Clarice & Joshua on the front, but then again, Hazel and Jamie have been on EVERY cover thus far, so I think that should remain a thing... As for buying all of them, I have to be honest, you may want to wait. Book 5 has been out of print and sold out for years now, and it's impossible to find. At this point everyone knows I'm putting together an omnibus of the first 1,000 strips in color (Laeluu just finished all of them!) next year, so it may be worth waiting for. :) Anyway, thanks for the feedback, Preach!

This is tough - no wonder you want input! Book 9 - hard to chose between Goopy Kitty and Mimi/wedding dress. Book 10 - Goopy Kitty and Hazel, no contest. [ So I guess that means Book 9 goes to Mimi.] Tutorials: Carol , Ghost Kitty and Gabby for sure, and maybe Melody. I actually need to learn to draw/sculpt a preteen girl right now to be the creator/operator of a giant robot I'm building. Any resources you can aim me toward? Stuff from the Illustration class would be great.

Ghost Kitty! Oh and Zach, Darren, & Sloth Erin. Thanks for asking, looking forward to owning the whole collection!

Zach, Darren, Keith, Joshua.

Keith is a distinctive late addition to the series, and would make a great model. Similarly, Sloth Erin is playful and distinctive. Zach is an omission that really should be rectified, just from his impact on the series, all the way to the finale. I can find various reasons to pick the 4th vote, but no-one else really stands out, they are all good choices :)

I'm glad you're thinking of putting Hazel and Goopy's roadtrip on the cover of Book 10 - you kind of have to have the final story arc represented on the final book; it was, looking back on it, kind of the perfect ending, and I'd like the cover to represent it. For the how to draw thing, well, I can't draw anyway, but more Sloth Erin is always nice. I guarantee I would not be able to replicate her even if you explained it at toddler level, my hand-eye coordination is almost non-existent, but I'd still enjoy seeing that design come together stage by stage. Sloth! Also, if you're finally doing the last two books I guess this means I finally need to buy them all. I used to buy webcomic collections as they came out, but so many didn't ever finish publishing the completed strips that I stopped doing that and now wait until all of the books are out and buy the lot in one go. I'm an anal completionist, I like to be able to read a thing from start to finish. Even in an apartment where the walls are basically lined with books, I'm going to make a special space for GwS.

I vote for Joshua, Ghost Kitty, Sloth Erin, and Keith

Ooohh! Duh, of COURSE - I have to include the Jamie expressions sheet & the Jamie turnaround! Thanks Terry!

Danielle Corsetto

Zach, Darren, Sloth Erin, and Ghost Kitty for the learn to draw. I think that slides from the Illustration class would be cool. The one that stands out in my mind is the one showing all the different expressions.

Terry Peterson

Zach, Darren, Joshua, Melody. I really liked the illustration class, so that'd be fun to see in the books!
