Happy Birthday, Hazel!

I nearly forgot Hazel's birthday yesterday!! Happy belated birthday, Hazel!!

Here's a quick ballpoint sketch I did of her Tuesday, after my yoga class.

I make it a point not to get to know the people in my classes, because I consider that time sort of sacred; yoga is a very isolated, personal exercise to me, even though I attend classes with up to a dozen people in them.

As I was walking out of class Tuesday, skillfully avoiding conversation with my classmates, I considered making a shirt that says "I'm not here to make friends." This being a small town, I think it'd be unwise to inevitably become "that unfriendly yoga chick," so I won't do it. But I bet Hazel would... assuming she could be talked into doing yoga in the first place.

Happy Birthday, Hazel!

Great work :)

Cool.

I think it'd actually be great to befriend one or two of the people from my class outside of class! (This town is ULTRA SMALL and practically everyone winds up at the Meck at some point.) I rarely make close friends in town, so I guess I sort of leave it up to fate? That said, I've definitely become closer with one or two people whom I've seen in class; we just met through mutual friends afterward, and luckily they don't seem miffed when I greet them with a quiet smile and "hi" at yoga class, then move directly into child's pose. ;)

Hmm. I've been stewing over this for several minutes now. I think I get what you mean; how this time needs to be focused, private, distraction-free and reserved. But it would be sad to miss out on an important relationship because of it. Do you think it would not be possible to be private during class and open to being social with the others outside of class time? I have no personal experience with yoga, but I would expect people to be quiet and directed toward the experience they are being led through by the instructor, as one would during any other meditative exercise (unless you're in a comic strip, sitcom or movie, of course!) - whether they know each other or not. In any case, it is good that you know this about yourself and have the strength to live accordingly. I'm glad I'm not in your yoga class (disregarding that the idea of me doing yoga is ridiculous), because I would hope we would be friends should we ever actually meet.

I think that's true for a lot of artists. I know Wheezy Waiter does that same type of personal reflection when he's editing videos in coffee shops.
