Take my illustration class!!

Hi-ho, patrons! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and a helluva New Year's Eve!

It's been a LONG while since I've posted, in part because of the holidays, but also because I've been prepping to teach a college course in illustration at my alma mater, which starts this afternoon! (Depending on your time zone.)

While you'll probably see one or two posts relating to the class no matter what level you're pledging, I've added a new patron level that allows you to take a light version of my class alongside my students. For $20/month, I'll be sharing all of my lessons and some of the students' work along the way, as well as my own work (I like to give myself the same homework that I give my students so I know it doesn't suck). In addition, you'll be encouraged to engage in the comments section so that I can give you feedback and answer any questions you may have for me (about materials, process, time, your personal challenges, your relationship issues, etc.).

I'll be catering the class toward what I learn about my students this week, so I won't have a thorough schedule for a week or so, but here are some of the topics I expect to cover:

Once I develop a rough outline for the schedule, I usually allow the lessons to flow organically with the class, so I can't promise a rigorous "Monday And Wednesday We Will Learn Watercolor" schedule, but for $80 I think it'll be worth it. :) And of course, you can dip out or drop back in whenever you like, so if you just want to take a chance on one month, you can do that, too.

For those of you who stick to the $1 and $5 levels, I'll also be finishing a script for an OGN I started years ago, so you'll see bits of that (I'm only writing this one, but I like to include sketches for my artist), and if I put any more work up for sale on Etsy, you $5 patrons will be the first to know about it (and benefit from a discount code). :) After the OGN is written, I'll be putting together GWS books 9 and 10 (way overdue!), so you'll get sneak peeks of that progress as well! Thanks for sticking around, guys! This year is going to be a dicy one for me, so I need all the help I can get, and you're keeping me afloat.

Take my illustration class!!

Comments

I am wayyyy late to the game on this (and I notice this only goes through April)... I only just heard about this illustration course and was curious if it was appropriate for super-duper-beginner people? Or a bit more advanced people? It might even be too late for it at this stage.

Joseph! Great news, I heard back from my rep pronto, and apparently when you sign up for Patreon at the $20 level, you get access to ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING I'VE EVER POSTED. I had no idea! If your pledge fails to go through at time of charging, you'll lose that access, so all you need to do is make sure your credit card will work. ;) I suppose this is a bit unfair to those people who pledged for February AND January, so I won't be loud about this fact... but since you asked specifically, I thought I'd let you know. :) Hope you enjoy it if you sign up!

Hey Joseph! I've been wondering the same. Let me ask my rep at Patreon; I'm confused because I *think* it's a monthly thing (in which case if you signed up now you'd get all of February's lessons, but not January's), but I'm not certain. If you don't hear back from me, it's because there's a labyrinth of comments at this point; feel free to nudge me! Either way, you can drop in for a month's worth of lessons anytime; they're not reliant on past lessons to understand. And thank you very, very much for the kind words, especially for remembering fondly the "chicken poop" scene. ;)

Quick question: if I sign up at the $20 level now, will I get access to the lessons that you've already given? (I'm not sure if this is a video course, and if so, if it's only available as live streaming.) Many thanks for your time, and (while I'm here) for GWS. Wonderful comic. (I still laugh randomly, every so often, at the memory of Jamie singing "That's chicken poop" to Hazel.)

Hey Kathryn! That is the sweeeetest idea! If Patreon offers gift services like that, I don't know about them, but what you could do is set up an account and give this person (assuming you trust them!) the password to the account so that they have access to it! Unfortunately that's the only solution I can think of, but it's worth poking around Patreon's help pages to see if they offer something different. It'd also be worth sending a request for such an option; the more they hear from you guys, the more they know what you'd like them to add. Either way, thanks for your kind thoughts!!

Hi Danielle! I saw this and thought it would be a perfecto bday gift for my favorite burgeoning artist/comicteer I know irl (and also a great way to support one of my fave artists I don't know irl...) Is gifting digital/online content something Patreon supports?

Oh hey, I forgot to answer this yesterday! It sort of depends. :) Here's what I said to a friend of mine who just draws for fun from time to time: "I think for the price, someone who isn't already drawing a whole lot will still get some good basic advice. 50% of my college students didn't have Illustration I and are at what I consider to be a beginner level, while some are naturally skilled, so I'll be teaching for a variety of levels."

I'm curious about this, too!

Teach me, Danielle.

Love this idea, Prof. Danielle! ... Is this course appropriate for raw adult beginners or is there any expectation of prior experience?

I upped my pledge to $20 for the class. I can't wait to start!
