OBS Studio 27.0 is out!
Added 2021-06-02 00:41:17 +0000 UTCWell after about seven weeks of testing, version 27.0 has finally been released. I usually really stress out every time we do a major release, but this time I was pretty surprised that I felt much less stressed out. I have to admit I was pretty concerned about potential issues, especially considering the fact that we basically changed the internal color format for almost all of the textures in the entire program. Another thing that I was concerned about was the Undo/Redo feature, which had a ton of blind spots that we didn't know about until we started testing it. But I think the longer duration of testing really helped iron out all those issues, and all of the contributors worked really hard to help iron out bugs. In the end, it ended up being a near seamless release, and it's amazing considering the large (and deep) extent of changes.
I am really grateful to everyone who contributed to this release. This was the first release where I didn't write any of the big features myself. I did help writing fixes and improvements to those features, but for the most part I was able to focus on managing the project and reviewing code. I wish I could say that I'm good at it, but the reality is that managing the program and reviewing code requires a lot of attention to detail, and for some reason I have a lot of difficulty with that, which is part of the reason why testing probably took longer than it should have. But the update went really well, so I probably shouldn't worry too much about it.
There were so many features and so many changes. It was just unbelievable how big this release was:
- Programatic added the long-request Undo/Redo feature
- Feaneron not only added Wayland support to the backend on Linux, but also added new Wayland capture methods
- Dillon added a missing files dialog which pops up on startup if any of your sources have missing files
- Rcdrone added a new internal display capture method on Windows which fixes the age-old problem of Display capture not working on laptops
- Rcdrone also converted our entire backend to linear colorspace (sRGB), making color representation much more accurate
- Rcdrone also fixed the issue where DirectX 12 games would cause game capture to have a stuttering effect
- Palakis added track matte transitions, which allow you to add masking to your stingers which determine how it transitions from A to B (rather than requiring a flip time point)
- Exeldro added the ability to use transitions when showing and hiding individual sources
- Pkv added the NVIDIA noise removal feature
- cg2121 and tbodt added service integration and browser panel support on Linux, which Linux had been lacking for a long time
And that doesn't even mention all other tweaks, improvements, and bug fixes that have been made. Or all of the other active contributors. The amount of features and changes for this release was just over the top. I can't believe the release went as smoothly as it did. I am just so incredibly grateful to everyone. It was a lot of work ironing out all the bugs and issues, but it was worth it.
As for me, a very large number of code submissions managed to accumulate while we were trying to release version 27. I'm not exactly looking forward to reviewing all that. And that's not even half of what's going on behind the scenes these days. It can be a little bit overwhelming at times.
Anyway, you can check out the latest release here:

Hope you all enjoy the release! And thank you very much for all the support.
Comments
If you just want to crop a source, you can hold alt and drag the edges. Otherwise if you have issues with Wayland, just know that our Wayland support is still experimental. Would probably be better to ask questions about Wayland in our Discord server ideally.

2021-09-01 01:26:45 +0000 UTCI am using OBS on openSUSE Tumbleweed. I tried to switch to using Wayland instead of X11 and the window capture bit works but I cannot crop the windows with the PipeWire module. Is there anything I can do, file a bug or feature request this someplace? What can I do to help?

2021-08-23 17:37:44 +0000 UTCI love OBS. Why it took me a whole year to transfer over from a Logitech app, will remain one of the great mysteries of my life.
