Not sure if any of you enjoy audiobooks, but I’ve had this big hardcover Marlene Dietrich book for ages and never quite got through the entire thing… but now that I have this 30+ hour long audiobook to enjoy while sitting in LA traffic, I’m really enjoying it!
I remember Gottfried Helnwein, who was a friend of Marlene’s, telling me about how disappointed her friends were when the book came out. It is a VERY candid book written by Marlene’s only daughter, Maria Riva. But I have to say, so far, there’s nothing unbelievable in it, and, although it might be unflattering to Marlene at times, it was a very different time.
I am personally enjoying it very much… it is colorful and descriptive, has lots of inside information on Hollywood in the 1930s and 40s. I think it’s not unusual for children of showbiz icons from that era to have a difficult relationships with their “legendary” parents. I know that Maria Riva is in her 90s now, and I also know that she didn’t release this book until after her mother passed.
When I finish a great audiobook, it can be hard to find something else new and wonderful. I’ve got a long way to go with this book. I think I have about 25 hours left still!
A few other audiobooks I absolutely adore: Elvira’s, Sharon Stone’s, Pamela Anderson’s, and André Leon Talley’s.
I do love to actually read a book, but these days I feel that I need to multitask, so I choose certain TV shows I don’t have to pay much attention to while I do my hair and make up, and audiobooks when I’m driving.
Always love to hear more of your favorites as well!
