Well done on figuring out the core of it early! Gravity's Rainbow is a real book though. A real pretentious one that a lot of people claim to read, but very few people actually do. The baseball is only significant because Richard throws it out the window, which causes it to be picked up by the dogs, then to Blanc, then back to the house into Linda's hands. Which causes her to put it back in the spot it goes into on Harlan's desk, which then prompts her to notice the letter from Harlan about Richard cheating on her in the invisible ink. That's what she's reading as she watches Richard trying to talk the cops out of arresting Ransom.
