Restitched: Recapped! | April 2025

Welcome back to another Restitched: Recapped! development post!

We've had another productive month on the game! Things are quite ambitious around here, and we've made some exciting developments on top of our usual ones. This month we've mostly focused on preparing the Wardrobe for future testing and demos.

Let's check it all out!

Coder Call-Out

Toward the end of the month, we announced that our Coder applications had opened again. A talented batch applied, and we quickly chose a new developer to join the team!

We're happy to announce that Linus (Krosso) has joined the team, and has already been working on some exciting things! When joining the dev team, Linus introduced themselves by saying:

Hello! :) Like many [at Trixel], I am passionate about UGC games. I have always loved the creative side of gaming, whether that means creating games, designing levels and maps, or theorycrafting strategies. I also speedrun some games on GDQ, ESA and now UKSG from time to time! I'm excited to contribute and learn as part of the team!

Wardrobe Testing Announced

We've finally announced our first-ever Restitched testing phase! The Wardrobe Test will be rolling out in phases this year and will eventually become a more polished public Steam demo. You can read all about these plans in the full post here.

As a reminder, we are not accepting requests to join the test. Testers will first be chosen by our team, then any public spots will be announced if/when they're available.

New GIFs (Tenor)

We've added a small batch of new Stuffy emote GIFs to Tenor! This is the GIF service integrated into many social platforms, like X (Twitter) and Discord. Search "Restitched" to find them!

Logic Threading

Raphael has been working to develop the logic system more (a highly ambitious task)! Before temporarily moving over to the Wardrobe tasks this month, he was able to setup support for proper logic nodes and connections. This means you can now create and attach (or detach) 'cables' from the logic patches.

Stamping Tech

To bring our new Stamping system into the Wardrobe, we needed a little help from third-party assets that allow source code editing! We've used a combination of custom code and support from the PainIn3D Unity asset.

This is an incredible and robust add-on to take inspiration from, as the future support to expand our Stamping system is already there. For example, having normal maps on Stamps, making them metallic/shiny, and various performance and placement modes.

Raphael has taken over the task from Lewis and has now made it possible to wrap Stamps around Stuffy in the Wardrobe. There's still work to be done, as we need to save these Stamps to outfits, display them in the level, and have them apply to Cosmetics too.

New Glass Shaders

Halston has imported and modified glass shaders that are meant to be both flexible for artists and performance-friendly for the game. These new shaders are now our go-to for any glass materials in the game! They allow for a range of textures to be used on them, and you can set the refraction to create loads of different glass types.

They even support light translucency, which you can see below:

New Metal / Multi-Purpose Shader

We've imported a new shader, which is currently just experimental for us. It has a lot of properties that let us create tons of new effects. However, the most useful thing for us has been its cube map effects! We've used these to improve Stuffy's eyes, metal materials, the trixel+ shirt, and more.

We've even used the shader to make an animated glitter material:

You can see the new glossy eye effect on Stuffy here:

The updated metallic look is shown below on the trixel+ shirt:

Snorkel Gear

Issac has made a Snorkel Gear face item for Stuffy, which will soon be textured and imported. Maybe we can whip up some swimming trunks and Scuba fins to go with it!

New Candles Shader

Halston has used a translucency shader on all Candle Props to allow for a glowing effect when light sources are inside, behind, or near them. Below is an example of the Standard shader (old version) and the new light translucency effect!

New Light Props

Santiago has created a few new light source Prop models. These will be handy for decorating levels with new light types!

New Detail Stamps

Daniel has delivered a new batch of Stamps intended for use in the Wardrobe (but can be used in levels too, of course!) These include blemishes, line patterns, shading effects, cartoon facial features, and more. Super handy for decorating your Stuffy's look!

Gopnik Outfit

This outfit was conceptualized by a former 2D Artist (Michael Wright), modeled and textured by Icey (Yousef), and imported by Halston.

It's a collection of basic items that are combined to create an outfit themed toward Russian subculture! All items are fully recolorable and include Slicked Hair, Lollipop Stick, Track Jacket, Track Pants, and a Drink Bottle.

The Track Jacket is especially lovely when recolored!

New Hairstyles

We're only getting started! This month we've imported half a dozen new hairstyles for your Stuffy to wear. This mix includes masculine, feminine, and unisex options.

Middle-Part:

Side Fringe:

Ponytail and Bow:

Spiked Quiff:

Short Bob:

(this one still needs a higher-poly pass, as it's a bit too blocky!)

Messy Side Sweep:

Tight Bun:

We've also gone back and updated the Office Updo hairstyle, including an added pencil accessory in the bun:

Hand Plushie

Issac has created a new Hand Plushie for Stuffy ("don't speak to me or my son ever again"), which currently has 2 swatches and recoloring support.

We'll need to fix this one up in the future if/when we can add bouncy and ragdoll-esque physics to Cosmetics.

Racer Jumpsuit

Formerly the Janitor Jumpsuit. We've renamed the item to just 'Jumpsuit', then added a swatch for both maintenance/janitor and a racer! It looks lovely, doesn't it?

We felt a bit bad about the April Fools racing game announcement!

Ram Polish

Halston and Yousef have polished the Ram outfit (shown previously) to have fixed material shading on some pieces.

Rat Set Importing

Yousef has created a full rat-inspired outfit, which was based on a contest-winning Stuffy outfit design. Halston has started importing these items recently! The progress of the import is shown below:

Plush Pineapple

DeRose, Halston, and Yousef have added support for Stuffy's head to shrink/hide, allowing us to make 'mascot' outfits and head items! Naturally, this meant it was time to start making our Plush Pineapple outfit which we revealed a concept for a few months ago.

This was quite the artistic process! We had to go through many revisions before we settled on a final design that we were all satisfied with. We wanted to be sure it matched the concept and was faithful to the original idea.

We've even added Swatches to support various facial expressions, alongside a blank version that allows for full recoloring and Stamping:

Goat Outfit

Issac has finished the texturing for the Goat outfit, which is being imported now!

Various New Cosmetics

Halston has been importing various new items, most of which were created and rigged by our go-to Wardrobe Artists, Issac and Yousef.

Sombrero:

Emo Hooded Shirt, Night Gown, Chef Hat, Robot Antenna:

Trucker Cap:

Another one of our long-standing artists (2D+3D!), Carter, has made further progress on a new and improved Synthwave background. It's so pretty!

Halston has been importing the background into the game, though it needs further lighting work to be considered finished:

Jump Height + Run Speed

We've increased Stuffy's jump height and run speed (again)! These small value tweaks are done throughout development as changes are made to other areas of the game. We want Stuffy to feel balanced and have their speed relative to the environment, level size, and more.

A stronger jump and quicker movement make the game feel more fun and responsive.

New Level Settings

Our newest Coder, Linus, has added several new long-awaited level settings! These include new options for the camera controls and gameplay abilities.

Unfortunately, these were part of May's development so we can't quite show it in this post... but be on the lookout for double jumping, 2D movement toggling, and more!

Sticky Note

Daniel made a concept for a super simple Cosmetic idea... a Sticky Note! This would let players pick an expressive swatch, recolor it, or place their own Stamps to make silly faces and designs.

Item Info Popup

Halston created a new UI concept for item info menus. This would be a popup menu that appears when right-clicking an icon in the Craftbook. It would present the player with the item name, author, description (if any), item icon, and option buttons (if applicable).

For example, this would be most useful for player-saved creations. It would also be handy for seeing tips and more info from official content, like crediting contest-winning designs or explaining what a logic piece does.

Swatch Icons

Daniel and Halston have been designing new icons for Swatch thumbnails in the Wardrobe. The first few are for the Pineapple Head (as shown above) expressions.

The final few are concept choices for a generic 'recolorable' icon that would appear on all items with a recolorable swatch.

You can see how those look in-game below:

Wardrobe Curtains Transition

Joel and Issac have been working together on a UI transition effect that will mask the loading between the level and the Wardrobe. This adds a bit of extra polish as well.

Our first attempt was to use an exported transparent video, but this wasn't performance-friendly and it would often cause the game to stutter when playing. Our next attempt was to actually animate curtains somewhere in the level (out of sight, of course) and render that as a texture over the screen!

This was an early version of it working, but future changes will touch up the animation, lighting, textures, etc...

Wardrobe Workshop

As Joseph codes in the backend support for outfits on the Workshop, Halston has been setting up the front end with UI designs. This was done by making a prefab variant (basically a cloned version) of the levels Workshop UI, then adapting it to support outfits instead.

These panels are loaded into a scrollable grid inside a popup menu. You can find this popup menu in the Wardrobe's Toolbar. Though it currently shows level details as a placeholder, it'll soon be linked up to display outfits instead!

We (or Unity 6) accidentally broke the icon photography tools, so Cosmetic icons weren't captured or imported anymore... But, Raphael has mostly fixed this! ...Phew!

The highlight effect suddenly consumes the whole object instead of just highlighting the edges. Yikes!

Oops... This was supposed to be a lollipop stick in their mouth!

Wardrobe-Fixes Branch

DeRose has been tinkering away at some much-needed Wardrobe fixes these past few weeks. This has all been done in its own 'wardrobe-fixes' git branch to not disrupt the main development. This has finally been finished, and is now merged with the main game!

The fixes include animation updates, proper shapekey deformation (shirts shrink when they're supposed to), Stuffy emotes properly with certain eyes, a lot of data has been migrated into a proper dev tool like our other game assets already used, and more.

We'll spare you the technical details, but it's now easier and more stable for us to work with Cosmetic content, and it's more reliable to put them on and take them off as a player!

Gameplay Animations

Luke has been animating new gameplay animations, meant to replace our current animations as a new-and-improved version. These are specifically for jumping and falling.

More extreme variants of the falling and jumping animations will be added next.

DeRose has imported and set up a couple of these animations, and it's looking and feeling much better already!

We've also added a new running turn animation, which plays when you quickly change directions at running speeds.

Wall Jump Animations

A wall stick animation has been made by Brennan! A second detach animation has also been made (not shown).

Gameplay Sound FX Support

Gabe has been working on adding more sound effects to the game. We now have support for sounds to play when Stuffy hops down from a surface, falls at a certain velocity, crawls, swings, and more.

We're still working to improve the looping code for some of these effects and to be sure they play at the right time and intensities (like when falling).

New Music Tracks

Thomas has been crafting all-new music tracks, which are all as stellar as always!

Comic Font: "TeddyType"

Ari has sent over their handwriting to be converted into a font! This new font has two variants: normal and bold.

It'll be used to make changes to the Cpt. Stuffy comic for print format and legibility. We can now use it to emphasize text, change the color, and more. Below is an example of before vs after:

"Trixel Spotlight" aims to highlight exceptional community content, whether fan art, commentary, or even in-game creations!

Note: Featured content does not endorse, confirm, or deny any ideas, misinformation/speculation, and is simply a way of bringing attention to community efforts!

What an incredible update! You really are making huge progress. The more you make those updates posts the more it hypes me up! I am eager to be able to play the game for it's release and I know the more time you work on it the more the game will be greater so take your time! The fact the logic work with cables and the same type of logo like LittleBigPlanet is making me relieved because I won't loose my touch on it and be able to make good levels in the future when I have time. The wardrobe is really going to be great for me because I enjoy a lot creating costumes and characters and the mascot head system is going to be really funny to work with haha anyway. Keep it up guys you're doing a really great job! You have all my support on your project and I will try to be a Patreon Support for as long as possible to help you financially making this project a finished world of art. Good luck to you all!
