Dev Video: Wall Jumping
Added 2025-03-24 20:48:36 +0000 UTCIn the past, we asked you all to help us brainstorm gameplay gimmick ideas. Using your feedback we could then decide which ideas to pursue and prioritize. One idea we heard a lot that seemed like a no-brainer was the ability to wall jump!
This month, we've begun prototyping such a feature. It's not part of Stuffy's moveset but instead is tied to a specific Building Material.
How does it work?
The idea is to stylize a special Building Material to look like tape, glue, or velcro. Stuffy sticks to the wall when in contact, then jumps up and away upon input. You can chain these walls together to reach higher places by jumping between them.
Issues to explore
This is not an easy feature to implement in a level editor game! We have a lot of edge cases to consider, which are causing problems.
For example: if you die while parented to the wall, if the wall is destroyed before you detach, if the wall rotates while you're stuck to the side, or if you return Stuffy in the editor while attached... all of these scenarios would softlock the game because it destroys or locks Stuffy.
Current state
What you're seeing in the video is just a quick and crude effort to prototype the code. It doesn't include bug fixes, polished movement logic, sound effects, art assets, or animations. However, through prototyping, we can decide if it's fun and useful enough to continue developing... and we think it certainly is! Who doesn't love a good wall jump?

It would be interesting if for example, glue and tape would have different properties like sliding down the wall if you're on glue, tape "losing stickiness" after a being on the wall for a duration that possibly the creator could change, and Velcro letting you stay on until you jump and or has a longer period before it kicks you off.

2025-03-26 19:55:04 +0000 UTCmaking the wall jumping specifically for different material walls is so interesting!! it makes so much sense as well. would love to see how the glue would react to the way we bounce off of it in the future if u ever plan to do that, like if it's a runny type of glue, seeing it string away from the wall as it attaches to stuffy's hands and feet would be pretty cool to see! and then having it snap off of stuffy at the last second or droop off

2025-03-24 23:40:47 +0000 UTCReparenting the player character may lead to more trouble than it's worth. Perhaps using something like a "soft" offset to the wall's transform would be safer? The interactions could also be physics-driven instead, such as to allow launching Stuffy from a fast-moving wall
