I thought I'd create a Jankman short...

Hello all, now that I've got that notation video out of the way, I thought I might experiment a little bit before my next video, starting with a Jankman short. Nothing too time consuming so I can get out a result quickly as an experiment with the format.

What I'm going to do is get Jankman to provide his thoughts on a particularly janky thing. Perhaps a music app or website or something else.

It felt like a good opportunity to open up to requests. Is there something you'd particularly like to see put through the jank mill?

I think I'll take suggestions now and then pick a top 5 for people to vote on.

What If I Told You that actually one of my gripes with Spotify is that it *doesn't* work this way? : D (Explanation: Sometimes I like an album as a whole, and I want to save it as if it was a "playlist" to come back to, but that doesn't mean that every single song on it is favourite-worthy for me, so I'd rather just save the "playlist" but skip the songs : ))

Joanna

i don't doubt that "ed" was primitive, and anything was a step up from the teletyper. but `set nocompatible`the way `.` works for some things to be repeated, but `,` and `@` work for others, by default `gt` switches tabs, but for buffers you need to `:bn` . I love (neo)vim and still use it daily, but I can't really say it is not janky

Martin Heuschober

Well, it's a matter of evolution. "vim" comes from "vi" which comes from "ed", and "ed" is really primitive. When a sophisticated terminal at one time was 80x24, your color was green, and it weighed 50 pounds, the editor design was bound to have some restrictions. Believe me, full screen editing without the CLACK CLACK CLACK of a Teletype machine was a leap forward.

What is with the jankiness about expressive keyboards? A little box made of spruce, strung with tanned sheep's guts that are rubbed with hair from a horse's tail and saturated with tree pitch (violin) is far and away more expressive than the very best in synthesizers. We've put a man on the moon, a helicopter on Mars, two space telescopes, and only three synths with really expressive keyboards (CS-80, Roli Seaboard, and Osmose). Otherwise you have a keyboard choice of sad, sadder, and saddest, all based on a simple electric switch. (Yes, the keyboard may feel nice, but it's still just a simple on/off switch inside!) Really, the main manufacturers don't seem to be even trying.

You never did get around to doing a jank-down video for Finale. As a 20+ year Finale user, I'll have my popcorn ready.

Jeremey Poparad

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I quite like Concur. Especially after the new redesign. Love ExpenseIt - it's very accurate!

Gimp, Inkscape and Blender's onboarding (lotsa historical infos there too) would be my suggestion. They are janky, but we don't really have alternatives (Blender improved a lot with 2.8+)

Dominik K

Well, now I am intrigued to have gimp cover, with your counter video :D

Sébastien Le Maguer

Sounds like you need to make one on Patreon's UI jank.

Warren Garabrandt

Haha, no, my secret goal was to put my Ardour comment in perspective. I think it really says a lot about the UX flaws of a piece of software when it manages to break an avid self-taught GIMP poweruser who really wanted to like it.

Guineafowl

So if Jankman was to cover GIMP, this may become a 'thing' between us? :)

Tantacrul

Oh, here's another Linux DAW one: LMMS. Specifically the song-editor module of it, which would make for a perfect Jankman skit with its completely unhinged distinction between "draw" and "edit" modes, that adds nothing of value, but is constantly in the way, and its behavior isn't even consistent. But then again, LMMS as a whole is so clumsy in such a naive way, that mocking it like that might feel like punching down...

Guineafowl

I'll defend GIMP till the day I'm in the cold black ground. I've been using it since way before my Linux days, and was actually surprised to learn that it has a reputation for being awkward/unintuitive. A colleague of mine, who is a professional designer/illustrator with decades of experience said that he's never seen anyone use any piece of graphics software as fast and efficiently as I do GIMP. And all that without pretty much ever consulting the manual or forum. Really my only serious gripe with it used to be that it forced you to use separate windows for the different modules, but thankfully they fixed that years ago.

Guineafowl

on a not too serious note, there's a real life - not software jank that has been bugging me since I moved to the UK: Windows - in Austria except for windows in the roof all windows swing open to the inside, which allows me to clean the outside of the glass in the uk windows open up or to the outside which makes it impossible unless I get climbing gear and go up the wall from the outside.

Martin Heuschober

Trust me, TIDAL is even worse - if you click 'save' on an album, it saves it under you albums folder, but doesn't save the individual songs in your songs folder...

Matt Dorrell

no worries, gimp, krita and inkscape were my suggestions, and I second blender

Martin Heuschober

Someone here also mentioned Inkscape and Gimp - and it was a great suggestion. Annoyingly, due to Patreon's new UI jank, I accidentally deleted the comment. Apologies!

Tantacrul

Dreamweaver makes me want to pull my own teeth out.

If you've never tried FL Studio mobile, please do, it's a work of art. It has a desktop version too, so you think you should be able to just notate something on your iPad and finish it on the desktop. Then you notice you have to airdrop your files to your desktop if you don't use one of two specific cloud providers, but hey you only need to convert it to a full FL Studio project once right? Then you open the FLSM file in FL Studio desktop and find out that what it does is not convert it to a normal FLS project but instead load FLSM as a VST inside of FL Studio for FL Studioception :D

Finale to complete the notation jank-journey

Robert Drummond

i’ll have to second inkscape. working with typography in inkscape is the jankiest shit ever. it only recognizes fonts installed with the system’s font manager, and even then it completely messes up font families so that most are literally unusable. in addition the settings for justification and line height never work. finally, basically no opentype features seem to work as intended. it would be an excellent case for jankman

snikskryt

having used both vim and emacs for years (and still using) i would still say that they have plenty of jank

Martin Heuschober

not just that, online banking in general; havent been able to log onto my bank in months because of their incompetence

Gordinator

With vim and emacs, the intention isn't to be welcoming, but instead to be as efficient as possible. I argue that this is something that needs to exist. Vim and emacs are targeting a group of people, mainly devs, who don't want to deal with inefficient bullshit just to hand-hold the people who can't read a manual.

Gordinator

Open-source games would be great to cover; almost all of them are (sadly) terrible; good examples include 0ad and lincity. also thanks for leaving the image as an attachment, a truly *janky* experience.

Gordinator

Be a good friend and be honest with him ;) You'd do the whole Linux music community a solid.

Guineafowl

I wholeheartedly agree. Only problem is that I know Paul (who runs Ardour) pretty well and I think I'd never hear the end of it :D

Tantacrul

Perhaps the FOSS DAW Ardour? It's not a bad piece of software by any means, but the learning curve is needlessly steep, and even when one manages to comprehend its unique logic, it's just so full of baffling anti-user quirks, that after literal months of struggling with it, I was defeated. I gave up my pipedream of only using free music software, and I downloaded a trial version of Reaper the other day. I've only been using it for a couple days, and I'm already more comfortable and am able to do more with it, without any googling, than I was with Ardour after countless hours of using it, reading the whole manual, reading tons of forum posts, etc.

Donall O'Donoghue

Spotify. Please, please, please do Spotify. ALL of their apps - web, desktop, mobile - have been frustrating me for years. They're absoutely awful. I know it's less of a "tool" thing and more of "just an app", but they're worth roasting for sure.

Joanna

The new Notion Mobile version is music notation based and is a very polarizing thing. It’s a complete overhaul and redesign of UI and having used the old Notion Mobile for many many years, the new one’s functionality is ultra jank to anyone who knew the old one.

gardenofadam

the iRobot roomba app is small and got some jank vim and Emacs (programming editors) are very powerful and very inaccessible to new users going more in the music direction ardour (daw), garage band, etc. and the Rubik's cube for an april fool's day jank

Martin Heuschober

Cinema 4d is i think not only the worst ui and ux experience i've ever had but also the worst actually possible.

Charli Harvey

Sure, no worries. Impractical suggestion on my end 🙈

FlyingWalrus

I think I'd have to use it practically to be able to review it, which just seems like a faff... since I'm not an employee or an employer :)

Tantacrul

Yes exactly. But maybe it's even less popular than I thought.

FlyingWalrus

Never heard of it. I see an employee travel management thing... is that it?

Tantacrul

Did you ever have to use Concur? Maybe it's not the most interesting topic for a video, but certainly the jankiest user experience I ever had..

holy hell, yes, dreamweaver. i had to check if this was even still being made, and oh no, it is.

msx

My gut reaction was to say 'Learning Blender is far too much of an investment for a short...' but then I realised I could make it about the onboarding experience :)

Tantacrul

Dreamweaver. That might be too much jank though.

Warren Garabrandt

Perhaps Blender? Not music, but a bit janky. You might become Project Manager 😅
