Awesome. There was a time when I used Audacity for quick and dirty things, but then there was a period -- that's how I remember it -- when Audacity was not being updated... and either way, editing multitrack music on it seemed really cumbersome. .. So I spent 20 years in ProTools, before switching to Reaper.

The first thought that crossed my mind when you mentioned the problem of cattering to different audiences (researchers use it, sound designers, musicians...) was the design decision made by Affinity in its edition tools.
If you haven't played with any of them yet, I highly recommend that you check the Affinity Designer (~Adobe Illustrator counterpart). They use the "Personas" concept to create different views depending on what you want to do. I particularly love the "Export persona", as I can focus entirely on the exporting process, and avoid the tools and cognitive load of the full editor.
As always, I love your work, and I am keen on checking your contributions to a tool I will use even more after your UX/UI pass on it.
