Scam Interceptors (Series on BBC1 in the UK)

Hi folks,

I know this is probably going to annoy non-UK people, but I've been involved in a BBC TV series called 'Scam Interceptors'. It's basically about people battling against scammers and it features a team of people doing very similar work to my own. In fact, I set up the BBC's computer access so that they could see and hear the scammers.

They could access a very large call centre; one which was too large for me to handle on my own, so they did me a favour in a few ways:
- They could intercept the calls which I couldn't
- Because this is on TV, it reaches an audience which I cannot

For this reason, I gave my time very freely and willingly - even though it took a fair bit of effort (many weeks on and off), the crew were able to record and intercept lots of scam calls and even saved a good number of people from losing thousands of pounds/dollars.

The BBC are protective of their "UK access" to these TV programs, but if you use a UK VPN, it should be possible to see the first in a series of programs here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00164dz/scam-interceptors-series-1-episode-1

I only feature in it for a few minutes, but you'll see that I have had a large amount of input to the programme; it reflects exactly the kind of work I show on my normal videos.

If you can access it, please enjoy. If you can't, there's a little bit of advice on how to avoid the region lockout here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/playback-issues/outside-uk-message

I hope you're able to see the first of these episodes.
I'm afraid I can't re-post the video as it's the BBC's copyright, but hopefully you can work around the region locking.

Jim

Comments

Coming to this a bit late, but fortunately the series is still available on iPlayer, and so far it's fascinating.

I'm in Australia, watching it now on YouTube

Jim, I’m just learning how to navigate Patreon. Has the BBC “Scam Interceptors” been released yet? And, is there any way that I can set-up notifications for that and anything new from you?

Mary Ann Ellis

Greetings! I am non-UK :) not at ALL annoyed :)

Coming across this series randomly on TV whilst housesitting for someone is why I am here to support the great work against a truly heinous crime, made me so angry 😡

HRobbin5

Presenter Rav Wilding was a police officer who served with the British Transport Police and Metropolitan Police Service. I don’t know that he failed, but a career change can be a good thing. The morning slot means my retired parents can watch the show!

Paulo

It reaches older folks, so that was always the aim. Where does the 'failed met police officer' come from?

Jim Browning

I didn't really want to play a huge part in this other than to set them up with access. the 10am slot on BBC is an excellent way of getting the message over to the people I can't reach. It's not really about me anyway - it's about seeing the scams happening. They did a good job of explaining what was going on and there's definitely a fair bit of tension. The same tension I feel when I can't reach some of their victims.

Jim Browning

I’ve watched a few episodes. It’s so important. The daytime slot and the way the programme is structured definitely should reach a lot of the people who fall victim of these scams (obviously anyone can fall victim but yno what I mean). It’s great you were able to assist with this show cos it is just very important. I also liked the segments of local people fighting crime in their communities!

Abi

Finally progress, our issue has been addressed by a failed met police officer on a mid morning programme viewed by the unemployed.

Check out the Discord :)

Watched the 3 available episodes already. I'm really happy you got to help them Jim, and that you're featured at the start of each episode. However, I do wonder why they don't give you a special thanks or mention at all in the end credits? You deserve that at least, unless you asked not to be mentioned? :)

Sam

I think we have some sort of BBC/ Canada on cable tv here. I’ll have a look. Good work, Jim.

KELLY

Just watched the 1st episode and I'm so pleased that your work is now becoming more recognised. I do wonder what the BBC view is of the legal grey area you, and now they, work in.

Elaine

This is so awesome! Amazing work. Though am I interpreting you correctly that the BBC didn't compensate you for your time and help at all? Rather cheeky of them.

Thayra

it's been uploaded on dailymotion.com

Chris S

Unable to watch with PIA or McAfee VPN. Thanks for the work though! https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/playback-issues/outside-uk-message

I echo the earlier comments about not being too fussed about not being able to watch this. I’ll give it a go though. The whole point is that we try and stop these scammers and that is why we support you! In the last week I’ve had 3 or so calls with a robot voice telling me that my internet is going to be disconnected. Unfortunately in all cases I didn’t recognise the number and was on a work call but the rather entertaining robot voice got recorded in my voice mails.

Nick

I can't share the TV program as it's the BBC's copyright, but I will be producing my own videos on the back of this... I'll release these before long.

Jim Browning

Jim, this is completely brilliant, well done. Fantastic work. Cx

Carole Noble

Thanks Jim for helping them! For us outside the UK, will you be sharing upcoming new episodes?

ol_low

Glad to see you getting more recognition. I thought it was interesting how persuasive telling them they were a BBC journalist was. Given the number of times you have had trouble getting people to believe you’re on their side, perhaps you could mention that you work with the BBC going forward? Might help? Well done indeed- they wouldn’t have a programme at all without you & now you really will make a massive difference. I’d nominate you for an MBE but you have to hide your identity!

Lorna Mangan

There is a free extension called 'Hide My Ass' for Chrome that you can use. It requires a free account but currently their IP addresses are NOT blocked by BBC, so you can use it to watch it via the website.

SpitefulBatman

I'm in the US; I'm not wanting to scam the BBC, but maybe BBC America would consider taking up the programming? PBS? Jim, your material is really a massive public service message that's necessary for everyone to view!

coder1000

Even if I can't watch it, it's money well spent to support you in foiling the scammers.

David Rickard

I used express vpn and chose their East London location.

Phillip Porch III

Darn. Cant view as I'm not in the UK. I purchased NordVPN, set it to the UK, but still not able to view. Oh well, I will just wait for the next awesome video you upload instead.

Dave W

Thisnis Awesome Jim you will always be a hero 🦸 in my eyes brother ty for everything you do

Sean Caufield

awesome work mate

Kat

I watched frankly your understated videos are far more compelling and dramatic than this over hyped twaddle. Its good to get the word out of course but as someone who makes TV as well it shows that the freedom afforded to YouTube users allows the real drama to unfold naturally, rather than by editors with unlimited subscriptions to over dramatic music libraries.

Ian Hannah

What VPN?! Nord didn't work for me

C.O.T.F.M

👍 Getting the word out regarding these kinds of scams on such a large platform will surely save many from the life-altering heartaches these ruthless criminals enjoy inflicting. Education is the key to prevention. 👍 Btw, I'm American and was able to access the program without difficulties. Keep up the awesome work!

BadMamaJama

Great. It's fairly entertaining and definitely covers the current telephone scams pretty well.

Jim Browning

I was able to watch this via a vpn. Great work as always.

Phillip Porch III

Yes - the BBC detect common VPN addresses; they're wise to this trick :(

Jim Browning

Very excited to watch this, have downloaded on my Sky box. Going to tell my older relatives to give it a watch as well!

Abi

I wish I understood nord VPN. Location was set to London and the link still tells me it is only for UK viewers. I'll just presume it to be as awesome as Jim is.

C.O.T.F.M

Good stuff JB!!

Paulo

I understand some folks have strong and valid opinions on the topic. Causing issues with licence payments would not help funding for programming like the very one above to be produced though! Granted, with commercials or some other finding mechanism it could still happen but currently the license fee is the funding.

Paulo

To balance things up a little, I've also been working with CBC in Canada and at least their 'Marketplace' program goes onto YouTube so that you can all see it. I'll post this link shortly when the program is broadcast.

Jim Browning

Just wanted to put this out there. I am not from the UK but I have no problem with you spending time on this. I support you because you are helping fight scammers, not necessarily just to access benefits. Helping to build up additional resources to fight scammers and also getting more information to the people most likely to be scammed is a great use of your time in my opinion. Certainly others may disagree but I just thought you should know that there is at least one supporter with this opinion.

James

Thanks John. It really is thanks to you and everyone's support that I'm able to assist the likes of the BBC to get the message over. Thank you for this support.

Jim Browning

Raymus Munt

I've downloaded the episode on iPlayer, set to "series record" and will watch tomorrow. It's great that they got you involved Jim.
