Catching the Money Mules ft. Mark Rober

[Patreon version - early access without blurring]: https://youtu.be/vkVmIGAtZog

Hi folks, this is the long awaited collaboration with Mark Rober!

Money mules collect cash on behalf of scammers, keep some for themselves and pass the money on. But who are they and how do they avoid being caught? We find out using Mark's glitter bomb 3.0 and a bit of digging on the scammers' computers.

It's even possible to scam them back...

Enjoy!

** I've not blurred the pictures of these money mules, so please don't share this version. The public version will have them blurred. **

I have enormous enthusiasm and respect for the work you're doing and am proud to be a sponsor! It's so valuable for people to see the real time exchanges and how to avoid these parasites. Hope you're earning well this work, you deserve it!

This is great. It was amusing how the scammers seemed genuinely impressed and were good sports about being scammed themselves. I did not expect that.

Great video.

oh my god when he started shouting re the money.. That is gold. Please continue to support JIm!!!

Ramon M

I'm not able to see the link to Mark's video. The description doesn't seem to have it.

News that gives some satisfaction and hope that the authorities are willing to take action albeit only in random instances. Thank you for your work

sorry Jim, I thought I have paid already to your Patreon. But, I just realised my payment did not gone through. Is all sorted out now. Thank you for all you do. my heart goes to the victims. I have been bombarded with calls from Indian accent this past few weeks. I talk to one and wasted half an hour of his time. thank you for educating us with all this scammer. I am in my fifties and I have never received any call like this before. Just only now, well I guess as you said they are targetting the people in their fifties. Thank God that I am hook to all of you SCAMBAITERS. I only find out all this scambaiting only last month. so, I watched all of them you guy's are a hero.

Could you do a video on how best we can waste scammers time so they can't scam others but also keep our data and computer safe when doing so? I would love to join in the fight whenever I can

Jim, FYI I had a ticket earlier today (I'm INFO SEC-Incident Response) - a user received a scam fax, but they got suspicious. I researched and found the dirt on this "company" - it looks like they were trying to hi-jack our actual vendor (bogus URI and phone numbers) I checked them in Virustotal, Fortiguard and one other - newly observed domain, "five dollar hosters" so it looks like they were still in the process of setting up. I turned it over to our lawyers for a take down. (Whack-a -mole). I explained in the tickets comments to the user about scams, and referred them them to your youtube channel for further information - solid security training and awareness. burn'm down Jim!

Thank you all for your service Sir/Mam.

As a new Patreon I must say I am loving your work Jim. Glad I found you on YouTube and even better to be involved with you on Patreon. Great video and collaboration keep up the great work against these scammers

Found you through mark rober. Great content

This work is just amazing - the relief you guys must have brought to those victims - well done mate, truly, truly fantastic work

We're enjoying your work thoroughly and support you fully in your endeavours. Looking forward to more of your videos and to people getting what they deserve

So your saying that non-"whites" never do what you described?

"You're an angry little elf..." Many found this line funny, but I think its very subtly racist. I don't think Jim would have said this to a white person. There is a tendency in many whites to be patronizing to non-whites .. giving them pet names and comparing them to aliens or something non-human. This is a deeply ingrained white supremacist behavior. (And no...it doesn't matter that its also a quote from the movie "Elf".)

sorry, that should have been people, rather than men, but it was a quote

Mr Browning, Sir, you are a legend and a force for good It warms my heart that there are proactive people out there because 'for evil to survive, all it needs is for good men to do nothing' and plus... I know naff-all about computers... ...I am helping make the Moderna vaccine though..

Thanks for doing this, Jim. I know an elderly person who was robbed of hundreds of pounds by scammers. I wish the telecoms, tech companies and banks would do more to stop this - you've shown that it's possible - imagine what a team of 100 with some proper funding could do to shut them down.

Very nice job Jim. You never disappoint. Loved it.

Well done Jim, amazing work again! Our Internet superhero strikes again! Very impressive. Il check Marks out now 😁

Andrew

Thanks for what you have been doing! I have been getting hooked on the video’s. I love it when you are able to intervene in a scam in progress!

I don't think you should tell them anything about your methods not even about the voice changer. The less they know the better.

The Art of the Reel

Just saw the video on Mark's channel! Amazing stuff!!!

Kumail Abbas

So awesome! Really hope you do go to India to track these parasites at their source

This is so much on to the next level ..... thank you Jim.

RM

Amazing work Jim. I guess what I'd like to know is why it's up to a talented and motivated civilian to do this work. Surely actual law enforcement should be doing this.

Wow. This makes my day. Thank you!

Hyperballad Eyes

This is why you are considered "The Master"

Just joined as well you are doing a great job. We just had the elections here in our country but no party had something to say about online scamming while i think it is one of the biggest problems we are facing. We own a restaurant with hotel and get scam e-mails every day i'm just getting sick of it. Maybe it's because of border problems that the gouvrnements do little to nothing about it.

Just seen Mark's vid on YouTube. So proud to be able to support this type of work, and to see it all come together in some rather entertaining ways. Fantastic result from all the work that You, Pierogi and Mark have done! Lets keep this train rolling.

Myke Lastname

I just joined. I am The Sunshine Explorer on YouTube. Your videos have really inspired me, and convinced me to support you. I cannot afford much, but I do hope it helps.

Well done Jim!

Eichhörnchenversteher

Once again, God bless you, Jim!!

Love it! Absolutely love it. Great job Jim.

Rev Me Bro

It’s a curious world where the scammers seemed to appreciate being scammed! Really interesting video thank you.

Hello, Jim. Excellent work. But I can't see the link of the video with Mark's version of it. Where is it?

Stellar work buddy

Nate

Amazing work Jim! 😍

Where can we contact you? I would like you to check out a company I joined 18 months ago. I need to find out if they are legit or not. They look legit however, I'm having serious doubts they are legit.

Richard Samuels

Hi Jim,

Richard Samuels

Brilliant, keep it up, we need more justice in the world

That was brilliant. I am a little bit gutted that they took it so well though. I was hoping for a complete meltdown.

Dave Stowell

Yeah - I didn't believe one word they said about only earning $100 per month. But I had condensed over a week of keeping them on the phone for hours into just a few minutes. I think they were more pissed that I'd wasted so much of their time rather than mourning the loss of just $100. As for FedEx, they haven't covered themselves in glory. What I didn't mention was that it actually took Tracey 2 months to get her money back as it was stuck in red tape to release cash. Oh well!

Jim Browning

This is in NO way meant as an insult, but honestly, I believe they were just fucking with you Jim. There's no WAY even a low ranking scammer makes 100 dollars in a month. Not to mention he wasn't quite sure if he was working there for a few days or two months. I just mean to say, I wouldn't put ANY stock in what these dudes say at times like that. They're trained bullshitters in any case. Having said all that, a great job as usual. Fuck these lowlifes and their US patsies. I also have to wonder wtf FedEx was doing... They said they were going to prevent delivery but didnt. But they DO just let any peron come up to them and take pictures of mail? Seems weird to me...

Roy Spaan

Great work. Watching these in the morning leaves me smirking all day. Thanks man

Well done. Another piece of amazing work.

Bumble Bee

Yes, this!

Susansterlingg

That is absolutely amazing! first time I see the scammers being scammed! You just keep surprising with new ways to scam bait the scammers! Keep on doing amazing job!

Tomer Hass

Nicely done!

yes, that does happen. Some are hooked into being their mules in the belief that they are being refunded for money that was taken from them before - I'm not entirely sure how it works but I'd imagine it's some kind of money laundering scheme where the scammed mule takes the cash and converts it into payment cards for the scammers.

Thank you Jim

Scamming the scammers makes me so happy

Naruto Uchiha

Thanks Jim. Although I was too late to stop a refund scam on my mother two weeks ago, I've been your supporter and I knew exactly what was going on. She felt so badly that we spent a morning watching your videos together so she could see how expertly these scammers operate. So you helped me and you helped her. Thanks for that.

Well, well worth the patreon sub. You sir are a genius!

I wonder: do all the mules actually know that all of the money is from scamming people? is there any remote possibilities that they are also being scammed? (for example: they are told it's some other kind of thing... like a charity... or something...?)

"I have cancelled the address" I can't anymore with these scammers 🤣

rtamayo88

"Good job, buddy!" haha my favourite part

deejaybee

After a poor and boring start to the year so far. This by far has made it and has to be one of your best videos to date. Defo will be looking out for more

I let my 9 year old daughter watch this with me and we laughed our heads off, that was the best thing I have ever watched ! lol

Just when I thought I couldn’t be more impressed with your work, you blew me away with this video, Jim! So nice for the scammers to get a taste of their own medicine. I work as a virtual assistant and there are A LOT of scams in my industry that prey on people wanting to get into virtual work. They will post “job postings” in Facebook groups and LinkedIn with a pay of $500/week to “run errands, send checks, mail client gifts, etc.” This is probably how some of these people become money mules like in your video but I’m not 100% sure. I know that the scammer will “overpay” the worker with a check or card. The worker will then be instructed to purchase gift cards to give to the scammer. Then, the scammer’s payment bounces and the worker is out the money. So it’s kinda similar to the refund scam. I try to warn people in my community whenever I see these posts go up but it’s hard as there’s so many popping up everyday! Thanks for doing what you do - it’s great to support you and I hope you will transition to this work full-time soon!

It was the "angry little elf" that did it for me! 💀 That was hilarious!

Hope Davis

Wow, just wow. Upping my contribution to Mega Gold. Great work.

Jeri Spence

I have a better idea. Tell the person sending the money to the scammers, that they are in a big hurry, because they are debating off a bunch of refurbished iphones(that work any where globally, if possible) with pre paid sim cards, because they sell them on eBay (they will have to find a way to naturally get this in the conversation). They can say that they are in a hurry to get these packed, so that they can FedEx em out to customers, and some are getting multiple models. They can tell the scanner that they will get these packages done, and then they will head to FedEx, and that they will send off their money(the scammers) at the same time that they send the phones off. This is all part of the setup. They may even want to say that they need to concentrate, because last time they did this, they sent a few phones to the wrong people, or sent extra ones in a box that was only supposed to get one, or something like that. Next, clone the sim card, place a gps inside of the phone, and/or place a sim card in the phone somehow, that makes the phone also call another number, when it placed a call, and that it rings when that phone rings, so that whatever goes through that phone, also goes through another phone, and that other phone is also tracked. Now, put the money in a box with the scammers address (or the one to the money mule), and put the phone with the added gear in it, into another box, and put a fedex shipping label on it, to a made up name and address. Now, or both of the boxes into another box, and on that box, put a shipping label to the scanner, or their Mule. When the Mule gets the box, they don't open it, but when the scanner gets it, they think that the person accidently sent them one of the I phones. Hopefully, the sun and the phone work globally, so that if they put the sim in it, they automatically have a free phone for a while. If it works as planned, you track them everywhere, and you gather evidence constantly. Eventually, maybe you could upload the info, and send a access name and password to the police in their country, to the FBI, and whoever else, so that they would get it and have troves of evidence against these people. In should be usable by them, as they didn't illegally gather this info. You would have to remain anonymous, so you wouldn't get in trouble for envassion of privacy, but unfortunately, I just ruined that by posting this! Oh well, maybe it will help spawn other ideas

Timothy Bunn

I think it was a man who was yelling, but I think he broke his microphone with the yelling he was doing. Thanks again for the support Stephanie. As you say, mission accomplished!

Jim Browning

I played them for around a week. They were totally convinced that I had mailed $10,000 to an address where no one could pick up the package. I claimed that I had more money, but the bank were spending ages getting the money to my checking account. I was basically begging them for a gift card so that I wouldn't starve. I asked for a pizza and a gift card to keep me going until I had more money. And they fell for it. There is someone in a random New York address who is enjoying pizza from a scammer in India.

Jim Browning

Thanks for this Andrew... very interesting indeed. I think a bit more might be revealed in Mark's video because we managed to record some of these mules discussing exactly how they would split the money between them. I guess there will be all sorts of different types of mules, but we went after at least 6 different groups with interesting results! Thanks again for your support.

Jim Browning

Thats made my day! Scamming a scammer, absolute genius well done Miss Anderson! hahahahaha " I ASKED YOU TO STAY AT HOME! I DIDNT ASK YOU TO WALK IN THE NIGHT!" HAHAHAHA, so funny! Keep up the good work!

Jim & Mark, two YouTubers I love collaborating ❤️ Dang I never expected Airbnb used for money mules, guess i am too naive 🤷🏻‍♀️

The entitlement they have to the money that they're STEALING is insane

Akilan Narayanaswamy

Great video Jim. Looking forward to seeing Mark's version too. I'm curious what the context was that they were giving you the Walmart Gift Card number.

Stephen Phayre

Good job ,i happy that i can contribute to your work even with a small amount , btw how about that scammers that call about Nino fraud i have received few calls and pressed 1 but the call disconnected and didn’t had the chance to talk to them lol

Brilliant work Jim. Great collaboration with Mark.

Btw I would be honored to contribute to y’all going to India and I’m sure many others will contribute as well 👍🏼

Stephanie Humphries

Omgggg Jim that was just amazing. You have me in tears of joy right now 😂you are the first person to scam the scammers what an honor 👏🏽That one lady was yelling at you so loud that she was losing her voice that’s when you know mission accomplished. Thank you and Mark so very much for all you do what a team 👏🏽💞

Stephanie Humphries

Pure Genius! Just increased my pledge this is excellent work! Hopefully you will eventually get enough Patreon’s to afford a trip to India....I can’t imagine how much the security would cost though.

Jim,

Andrew

Brilliant! Well done. I spent a pleasant couple of hours today revisiting a scam baiting website I used to avidly follow about 15 years ago called 419 eater. Their photo gallery is hilarious, they made scammers take photos with a loaf of bread on their head, holding a fish and a bottle of wine, believing they were about to be given a load of cash. It’s worth checking out if you want to see the old school stuff.

Lorna Mangan

It works well for YouTube videos :)

Jim Browning

I think that angry elf needs a little therapy.

Jim Browning

Kudo to you for giving them a small piece of hell they impose on people. I’m down to contribute to the expense for you to travel to India 👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Kellie Hopstein

I’m sure Jim used to be in MI6 :)

Brilliant, worth yhe wait👍👍

Ray Hicks

Nice work, Jim. This is why I support you.

OmegaPaladin

Oh I always forget to ask. Does the yelling ever work.

Robert Mendez

Jim , love your work . I would like to contribute towards your trip to india .

Awesome collaboration with Mark. It warms my soul knowing there are people with the time and the means to target these scammers, and post it for entertainment and awareness. Great work, as always.

Thank you. For your great work!

Robert Mendez

Awesome Jim! You stopped 2 packages. I also love it when scammers lose their minds, just like when you told them you already sent the package.

Rich ODrobinak

Have only blurred the victims... the poor woman who was showing the parcel at the start was a victim.

Jim Browning

Scamming the scammers on an anti-scam channel. Woah. That's meta af.

A Hoel

And it was worth the wait. Really good stuff. Though now I'm really curious as to how often they move the airbnb type places? It can't be daily, or they wouldn't be able to get the mail easily (not knowing what time mail runs, etc). But yet you completely threw them for a loop by doing it one day sooner than they expected, so clearly in that case it was just a day difference. Unless maybe someone was there for 2-3 days and it happened to be the day they left or something. I'm assuming they must put a mule down in one location, for example, 123 Main Street in Dallas, TX, and then the next mule's address is given for the next few days in Boston, MA, and then 3 days later the next in Atlanta, GA, and so on. The level of work they put into this is sometimes really simple so I'd assume there has to be a simple pattern so everyone can know it.

Chris Townsend

Epic!

Ivan Hartley

Brilliant!

Tripodski

Thank you so much! I'm proud to be one of your Patreons!

Krishna Ramaraju

it still has the blurring

Been waiting for this. Thanks so much. Keep up the great work, friend.
