Confronting an Internet Bully

** Unblurred Patron version. Please do not share **
https://youtu.be/B7SM7EoAepU

If the refund scam is one of the worst types of scam, then deliberately holding someone's PC to ransom to bully a victim into compliance must be one of the most horrible tactics these scammers can employ. But what is better than travelling to meet an Internet bully face to face?

Link to NY Time magazine article: TBA on Jan 28th 2021 (When public version goes live) Locked PC? See this workaround: https://fspro.net/lock-pc/

Thank you again to you, my patrons. I worked with Yudhijit Bhattacharjee (http://www.yudhijit.com/) on an article he wrote for the New York Times Magazine. I worked with him to expose scams to a wider audience, so hopefully magazine article will be of interest. It will be live online on Thursday 28th January.

Again, thank you to all of you - you make it possible to devote time exposing these scams.

Right? Literally sounds like one of the prank calls from Fonejacker!

Naean H.F. (Nez Man)

Calling from your computer company. Yeah, sounds legit.

Seeing the faces of these people makes me shiver. On a subconcious level in the blurred version they didn´t strike me as people you could encounter in your every day life. It just came to me how real they are.

VegaLupina

JIm I know you have your means but do banks believe you ? in my country its impossible to get through to customer care sometimes, let alone the president or ceo of a bank and then to tell them you are a good guy destroying a hack

Ramon M

You know what? On his whatsapp web, there seems to be a family group and one of the numbers is exposed. That could be a gateway to expose him to his family.

On his whatsapp web, you can see a group called 'HAPPY FAMILY'. There is a phone number visible there. I looked up on truecaller (which is like a public caller ID app) and the name that came up was 'Heena'. That's a woman's name. It could be a family member. Contacting her could be a way to get to him and make the scammer's life hell.

I believe this is the nytimes article: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/27/magazine/scam-call-centers.html for those who didn’t see the earlier post

This scam, unfortunately happened to my grandfather, and he has memory issues. I don't have this in my bio, but that was the reasoning for me going after these guys. $1,100 was stolen, and of course nothing could be done once the transaction was complete. I contacted our local FBI office and pleaded for their help, and the Agent I spoke to, with permission, listened in on one of the conversations when they called back for more money. While the FBI weren't able to get the money, they had traced the call and a few days later called and told us an arrest had been made by local authorities in Jamaica.

Where's the link to the NYT article you mentioned in the video? I can't find it anywhere and I'd be really keen on sitting down to read it.

Psychachu

I’ve never wanted to strangle a voice before. Holy moly.

John Myzell

"By mistakely" -- that would trigger my inner editor and I'd start correcting

Melodie Cook

Jim, I wish you could send a link of this video to all of his Facebook friends.....but of course, they're probably scammers also. There must be some shame in this.

scott kochman

they have a specific accent btw, its not an english indian accent, its an exagerated american accent , as soon as i hear that, i troll for 30 minutes and hang up

ArabianPrince

Grateful for what you do! Thank you!

Nikhila

Hey Jim. At 1:11 you can see the victim's name unblurred for a moment.

You are an absolute saint, Jim. The best money I spend every month is supporting what you do. Thank you, sir.

Ryan Fiorini

I would let the Indian tax authorities have all the "earnings" data. I hope one of the scam baiters who lets Trojans loose on scammer's computers has a go at these parasites!

Does anyone else find the typos in the Lock MyPC article concerning? Are we sure this is from a legitimate source?

Jessicah Jones

Best way to shut them down -> tell their family. If the police won’t enforce it, social pressure from those close to them will

The person getting scammed at 9:30, has Malware bytes installed. Shouldn't that have stopped or blocked the file that the scammer uploaded?

These guys are disgusting with the way the confront their victims on top of already being disgusting for scamming in the first place!

Akilan Narayanaswamy

If you've seen any of Kitboga's videos you might be familiar with his fake bank setup that includes a window block elements from quick html edits. A lot of the time the scammers don't know how to select the balance elements for editing because it's hidden behind a transparent window. I don't know if I'm explaining that clearly, but I think it would be easier to implement than frequent, automatic refreshes.

LizzyC

I read the Article that was written about you, and I love this part: "I will refer to him by his middle initial "L". The rest sounded like he's talking about the worlds greates detective "L" from the manga Death Note. At any rate, the article is really good and a great success in your history of real life superhero crime fighting!!

This guy pissed me off! I really hope they catch him & his gang! Good work though jim!

Once again Jim you lead the way in closing these lowlifes down. Thank goodness you helped that lady before she lost her money. I keep telling my 88 y/o mum to be careful when taking calls, we've now taken her off internet banking & my sister now deals with all of her financial business

Am I wrong or would this refund scam be impossible if banking websites would refresh the widget showing the amount of money in your banking account every couple seconds? Similar to how websites showing stock prices refresh those every couple seconds. Asking because that seems rather trivial to solve.

Eichhörnchenversteher

Hi Jim, FYI - you didn’t fully blur Patricia’s full name on the bank page.

Very nice work Jim!

If only the Local Police weren't so either corrupt or Lazy, these scammers might be put out of business permanently.

Mike Hughes

I recognize this guy's voice from other videos and see that another Patron has too. I'm so glad you were able to interfere on behalf of this lady. I'm currently majoring in Cybersecurity and am looking forward to one day being as capable as you in thwarting some of these scammers. Good job!

Thank you, Jim.

Great job Jim! I think the key to getting traction with local police is bad PR. Seems they have their own ways of dealing with things, or ignoring them for that matter, until unwanted exposure happens. Keep up with reaching out to journalists and media, it's working.

Those MF's needs to be taken down! Breaks my heart to watch those guys bully an old lady like this. Great work Jim, you are a goddamn hero.

Nice video as always! I guess since these scumbags can hide behind the phone they can just act however they like. Can't wait to see his reaction when confronted in the article. Keep up the good work, Jim!

rikuotanaka

Amazing. Blows my mind every time. You are an angle Jim Browning, thank you<3

L. Sar

Awesome job Jim, as usual. I would love to know how you get access to scammer's/victim's computers and be able to refresh the victim's browser

Rich ODrobinak

There's no mistaking that accent and voice. You have other videos about this guy. This is the same guy in the "Behind a scam" video where you kept turning on his webcam and he had no idea why it was happening while he was in the middle of scamming someone. He also appeared in "Thwarting scammers" where you managed to shut down the victims PC after he tried to stop you from doing so, threating the victim with talks of the FBI etc.. It's about time he has been confronted. This guy is an absolute scumbag and deserves serious jailtime.

rtamayo88

Amazing work Jim, as per usual. I really like how you are partnering with journalists to help educate people about this issue. Keep up the excellent work!

Ivko Cvejic

Jim, not that they are active any more.. but the Gift-Card Numbers show in the WhatsApp Message Preview on the left at the end of the Video

Dragendave

Great work...what an invaluable service you provide, and I am absolutely honored to help you provide it

Steve Witt

Those voices : 0 No wonder these guys are living with their parents.

Paula Hernandez

Thank you Jim

Wow Jim that Patricia lady was so lucky that she had a Jim Browning watching over her 👏🏽And I’m so glad the bank took immediate action. You are just amazing Jim and thankyou so much for doing what you do because you could be spending your spare time doing something else but you chose this and that’s what makes you special. I am still recovering from my total knee replacement surgery and this just put a smile on my face. 💝🥰

Stephanie Humphries

Keep up the good work! It breaks my heart seeing people get scammed by these bastards. Forever grateful for the people in the world like you!

I have a Master's in Cybersecurity and have probably learned more from Jim's videos and blogs that most of my schooling. If there is going to be a training up of Jim's Antiscam Army, count me in.

What's even worse is that if he managed to get her to send these $14.000, the scammer would only see fraction of it. Nasty people in the money laundering chain would take their cut without even having to scam old ladies. Terrible people.

Eric Darchis

Undoubtedly. I've heard as much from others in Kolkata.

Jim Browning

It's got so bad with LockMyPC, that the company has had to publish a backdoor unlock mechanism, thus completely defecting the purpose of their software.

Jim Browning

He has a particularly grating voice too.

Jim Browning

I am always checking to see if you have new videos, even though I have notifications on. A world hero!

Jeff Estoll

Thank you, thank you Krishna.

Jim Browning

probably kickbacks to the local cops..

Zoo Archer

Jim you Sir are a legend. Scams seem to be getting more frequent. People are losing trust in legitimate companies because they dont know who to trust. Wish there were many more like you Jim

Well done Jim! You should start teaching your craft.

There is no end to these guys. Now they are using lockmypc? Crazy. As always, great work Jim.

Grrr- all wound up looking at his smug, ratty little face and itching to slap it. I hope you get this call centre.

Lorna Mangan

Awesome Great work.

Robert Mendez

good work Jim

Jeff Keys

Thank you for the work you do

Insider Chad

Good timing :)

Jim Browning

Hey I was just rewatching Scamazon Prime as this came out!

Thanks Jim! I'm proud to be one of your Patreons. Please keep up the great work!

Krishna Ramaraju

Thanks Jim!
