Scam stopped in the nick of time

** Early access and un-blurred Patron version **

Sometimes I get the opportunity to stop scams, but this one was cutting it very fine.

You'll see a variant of the refund scam and one victim that I managed to stop, but it was too late for someone else. I've passed as many details as I can to the victim and the Faridabad police.

Thank you once again for all the support you give me.

Scam stopped in the nick of time

Comments

That poor guy was just trying to fix his mistake. You are a lifesaver dude

Thank you so much Hen, It's all worthwhile if you can stop a few scams or raise the awareness of how these scumbags get their victims. Thank you for this support,

Jim Browning

I just discovered your videos, subbed to Patreon after the second one and this is I think the fourth video of yours I've watched? My heart broke when you finally got that poor man on the phone to tell him he was being scammed and he was so scared and clueless. You're a good human Jim <3

My heart sank when that lady at the end was so adamant it wasn't a scam :(

HnTR

Great work well done!

omg! but why would they follow the scammer to go to stores to buy!!!!! i don't get it!

Chloe

Thank you for all of this! I have been looking for videos like yours to show to my elderly mother. She's been scammed multiple times and she gets horribly depressed because of it. She thinks it's all her fault. I've been trying to explain it all to her, but she doesn't trust what I say because she thinks I'm only trying to make her feel better. Seriously.... Thank you so much for doing this work.

Candace Tarkeshian

love hearing you talk to the victims and explaining whats going on. think we need more of that

Dave Stowell

What amazes me is how they coach their victims on what to say if they’re buying gift cards or going to their bank for a withdrawal. Should be a red flag right there - but I guess that’s where those scare tactics come in. Tougher to make the right choice or think straight when you’re in that state of mind.

RH

My coworkers daughter just fell for this! They got ahold of her email address and claimed her Apple account had been hacked and that whoever “hacked” her had charged several hundred dollars on her account (obviously, this wasn’t true, it was a way to get her to worry and follow their commands.) Well, she googled how to help and a scam website came up and she called the number. They finessed her out of $300 in gift cards. It’s appalling that you can google how to help and you get a scam site. That’s the downside of an unfiltered, unchecked internet search tool. Unfortunately, her bank said it was too late for a refund, so she got completely screwed over.

We need more people like you. No one should loose their hard earned money or retirement savings like that.

What you do is just absolutely amazing.

GREAT WORK MAN.. BIG FAn from india

Joseph was so upset and fearful. The thieves will do anything to get their money. They don't care what they do to anyone. They don't care if he would've been out on the street or had a nervous breakdown. May I recommend three words that will work and will help people believe you, when you call (since their defenses are up and the scammers tell them not to trust anyone else)? "CALL YOUR BANK." I know sometimes it's after hours. But if it is after hours, if you could get them to wait until the next day and call their bank or go in person, meanwhile leaving their device or computer off. You might save them quicker and easier. A lot of people will only become more confused by the computer explanation. But they might understand "CALL YOUR BANK," who could tell them there's no money added or missing. Would that work?

I absolutely enjoy, respect, and support everything you're doing. I'm happy to support your future ventures. I hope to use my technical expertise to help others one day.

You ending the Skype call to tell him not to buy the cards was at the last second like Indiana Jones grabbing his hat from the closing door! In all seriousness though, this was amazing. I just found your channel last night on YouTube and was so interested, I had to join. What you do is amazing and I can’t thank you enough for what you do and the follow through you have to try and prevent this garbage from happening to anyone else.

love what you do

Love your work Jim!

Perhaps that’s another way to shut down these bastards!

On YouTube reading an interesting comment regarding Indian culture where families who discover a member is involved in crime brings absolute shame and disgrace on them... all hell breaks loose apparently!

Watching your video really added up to my knowledge and thanks for the effort!

Ada Wong

You are absolutely amazing Jim! An angel working behind the scenes. Thank you 🙏 for helping us older gals who are just too trusting...who think people have good hearts like us.

Care to foot the bill on setting up these traps around the world that consist of IT professionals with high end equipment and their salaries ? It’s pretty obvious why efforts are limited. Especially in countries with more pressing problems.

PapiKink

Lol! you want Jim to take part in a theft. Cute.

PapiKink

Dude, rock on! I love this stuff!!

Hi Jim - Trust this piece of news is of some satisfaction. At last, they took some action maybe on the back of prodding by the US authorities

RM

It's really good to hear. I'd love to know the background...e.g. was a scam baiter involved or is it an internal thing.

Even though I knew it was going to end well, this still made me so nervous. Thank you for saving another victim, Jim! As for the lady who told you to mind your own business, I know the frustration now. I tried to save a woman from a romance scammer and she refused to listen to anyone. In the process though, I think I scared the scammer because they broke up soon after.

Music is a Rainbow

It's so sad what innocent people are going through!! The other challenge is how they will trust you from the onset when you initiate a discussion with them, that you are actually the "angel" trying to save them, and not mistaken you for another scammer. Great job Jim. God bless you.

my dude, you're awesome

The hero that the world needs

a bunch of scammers all in one boat? seems like a perfect time for a drone strike.

So much love and respect Jim. Do you know what percentage of calls result in people being scammed and what the average scam amount is?

Tripodski

@ChronoFinale we've been seeing that kind of (misguided) hubris for 4 years here in the U.S. It's probably a form of confirmation bias.

And again, this video was both interesting and thrilling! You're doing a great job and as they said on CBS: "We need an army of Jim Brownings" :)

Ben

My heart aches for these poor people. In the middle of a pandemic and all the fear and uncertainty, to lose your life savings as well... Thank goodness you're out there Jim. Wish we could build a team of a hundred yous across the world; think of how much misery it could prevent.

Ivko Cvejic

The hubris or the confusion of the lady is so disheartening. Not wanting to admit she made a mistake or not understanding what she was doing.

ChronoFinale

I did wonder why nothing gets done about these scammers. I did not realise how corrupt India was. It goes some way to explaining why India is the hot bed but I still do not completely understand.

Syd

Some people would rather deny the rational truth than admit they have been a victim.

Syd

Close call.. well done !

Good work

J D

Thank you so much for the awesome work and content.

SO happy you managed to save that man from loosing 2000$! I feel so bad for that woman though! To think that she has fallen for it so deeply that she didn't even believe it was a scam when told so. I hope she is able to get even a small portion of her money back at some point, but even if not I hope that she will now never fall victim to such scams again after realizing what had been done to her. You are truly amazing for fighting so hard to protect both past, current and future victims from something like this happening to them.

sarah4hp

Seriously Jim sometimes I wish i was not aware of what these "people" do it angers me so much I don't know how you do this without punching walls. I would watch the scammers until I saw the scammers financial details and I would HAPPILY steal the scammers money . In fact I BEG you please send me some scammers banking info I will do it ,not you me and we will disperse the money to some victims

Wow -- I'm glad you were able to set that woman straight at the end.

Melodie Cook

Another great video.. Great job as always!

Steve Jones

4:51 the victim's details are visible, you should fix this before the public version goes live

The scammers often give a reason the person can't call their bank. For instance, you will have to pay 25% tax on the transaction if you involve your bank.

The Police care ...a lot, as it is a great way to generate supplementary income. Brown envelope , under the table , coffee money call it what you will the fact is when they know of any illegal activities they can leverage payment . Unfortunately when Jim provides the police with evidence of illegal activities it can be used as "evidence" to substantiate extorting money. The Police can either A. Identify and arrest the scammers = no income or B. Identify the scammers and demand hush money = income. If you have ever lived or worked in India you'll know which scenario is most likely.

I have so many mixed feelings.. Feel extremely sad for the victim i was tearing up.. Angry at the scoundrel, ashamed that it is happening from my homeland and cannot do anything about it with a corrupt overwhelming legal system. and excited that you could save a poor mans hard earned savings... Thank you thank you Sir.. If i had the wealth like Microsoft would be running ads and a nation wide campaign warning and educating the US citizens about global heinous scams.. for now upgrading my membership. Forever indebted to the service that you are doing for humanity and India. Thank you once again

God damn hero. That’s what you are. You deserve so much for what you have saved people.

I was shocked at the lady saying Jim was in the wrong butting into her business. I felt so sorry for the gentleman. Jim, I'm so glad you caught him and saved him in time! I feel so sad and angry for all those who haven't been saved.

Rich ODrobinak

You saved that man so much grief. Keep up the amazing work!

Insider Chad

I wish the 7-11 clerk had asked just one simple question: Have you called your bank? So many of these scams could be stopped at the point of sale with just a simple reminder that other authorities exist.

George Dorn

Thanks Jim! I’m so proud and happy to supper you!

Krishna Ramaraju

as always: good job, well done!!

You really are top dog with catching out these dross. Well done and thank you.

Jim, you are AWESOME.

Laurie Soper

Yes. You could definitely hear the absolute terror in this man's voice when he thought all of his savings had been wiped out. "the nick of time" indeed. Well done, Jim. Too bad about the other victim, though.

How the police don't seem to care much? I think it's because Americans don't pay their salaries, so they spend their money on local crimes, not crimes affecting foreigners. How do you get them to say, instead of spending the money on police for local crimes, local salary increases, local equipment, more stations, etc., spend it on helping foreigners, that's not easy.

Craig Browning

The world needs more cyber specs.

This is sad to watch. I'm glad that you were there to guide this potential victim out of this scam.

Kumail Abbas

Listening to the sheer panic and despair in that man’s voice was heartbreaking. As one person there is only so much you can do. I don’t understand why each country around the world doesn’t set up honey traps for these @,@,@,@‘s they make me sick to the core. Well done on helping this man, and for continuing to try to get the lady to finally understand the predicament she was in.

Anita Davidson

You need a team. If anything ever happened to Jim the world would be worse for it.

Hearing the man's voice as he was talking to you damn near broke my heart. He genuinely thought he was about to lose everything. The store clerk telling the man that buying large gift cards are part of a scam is a victory for you Jim. You've done it. You've spread awareness.

rtamayo88

Wow, scammers really believe they can go on expensive team building exercises. Absolutely disgusting. Please keep up the amazing work Jim, we have your back. If there are other ways we can help you, let us know. I can’t stand these degenerates.

Every store clerk should have mandatory training. A simple prompt to call their bank and check the balance would stop so many people from losing money. These scammers must be laughing so hard at us because this is so easy to stop.

scott kochman

Always my hero! Well done Jim! Bless your heart

It's amazing how people who think it might be a scam, fall for a scam.

Joseph Brzezinski

You sir are incredible.
