Dismantling a scam (unblurred)

This group of scammers send fake Paypal invoices and try to convince their (usually elderly) victims to login to their online bank whist they have remote access. And it usually ends badly for the victim.

This time around however, I managed to find out who they were and I slowly dismantled their scam.

This is the unblurred Patron version of the video, so please don't share. I will have to blur out a picture of one of the scammers and some of his personal details.

Thank you again for the support you give me!

My heart sank when she was giving him the OTP. You need to teach your older people about this. Each one teach one.

That's gotta be the cheapest 1911 anyone has ever bought directly from the manufacturer.

I actaully had a friend who got an email from their boss. The email said to buy gift cards, she was very close to buying them. But she checked with her boss first. He was clueless but it only took a second to realize that it was a scam. That tactic is called social engineering, hope this gives you more info about scams.

Jim - I just came upon your work today. This hits close to home in so many ways: 1. I was scammed about a year back for $600 where the scammer pretended to be my superior at work and asked me to buy Google Play gift cards. If only I knew better then. 2. I am very pained to see that most of these scammers operate from India. This one in particular hit really close to home when I saw the address. These are the streets I used to walk when I was a kid, these are the neighborhoods I grew up in. And now these places are the epicenters of international scams. For what it is worth, an organization called Intercontinental Trade Promotion Agency works out of that address as well.

ITs a virtual machine so its sealed off, (sandboxed) you can choose to Input or output from the host (the actual pc) and so you install your flavour of windows onto your pc using software such as virtualbox an open-source free and quite adequate program and feature set or vmware, very similair slightly different setup and I think same features for personal use although I do not know for sure, if you have windows pro installed windows has its own one Hyper-V, however generally the other 2 are far easier to use and more tutorials are around, Jim seems to use vmware, I use virtualbox, You can install linux of any style mac which is a bit of a hat trick on a windows pc android as well and any windows from zesty 8 or crazy 98, you need ideally to be packing 8 gigs of ram for comfortable use, and a minimum of a quad core, it can be done less but it lags out.. and on your main host you install a vpn so your location and identity are wherever you want them to be and by doing it this way the peepers cant see you are using a vpn as the virtual machine connects to your connection as "ethernet" you can attatch adaptors so its "wireless" not necessary for this though. there are other tools jim uses wireshark on his main system being a very good one which is free, it tells you the ip locations connected to your network on that computer which by default includes your virtual one and whoever connects to it, a voip calling program, likely others I am just in the moment writing this. It is in a basic form not as tricky as it sounds you dont necessarily need to be techy to do aa basic vm kit, but Jim multitasks and moves like a gazelle ahahahhahaha he also will trick them into installing or actually installing a RAT remote-access trojan thats a social engineering little game that, ironically these idiots as far as i have seen use NO antivirus software, a RAT operates in a similar manner to any remote access software it is rogue however and unless you look for it you likely ont find it but it grants jim the access he gets at anytime he pleases. However I would not go to the level Jim does myself as I simply am just not as tech savvy as he s, the bank pages etc are HTML coding or css its software programming really the scammers little trick is they will do some on the fly html fidgeting however other than probably the more higher up onesthey only know how to change like the account number so it appears different but if you hit F5/refreshed the page it would revert back to what it was set at or IS set at if its your banking website. they are generally pretty stupid and only operate off a script, this is why when interrupted or questioned they ddeflect as they were not prepped for a question sucvh as ones baiters ask. There is another well many actually scambaiters Kitboga, he just wastes their time, he coes alot of fake giftcards and play pages so he really drives them nuts, so if you enjoy watching these slimeballs squirm or get angry and ragequit, check him out, he goes all out changes his voice to an old woman or man sometimes a preppy sounding teenager, his are more sort of comedic, jims are thorough and precise and he chases them, kitboga sometimes reveals but he really just wastes loads of their time, but its never too late to learn stuff, try some youtube tutorials and create a virtual machine its fun even if you just use it to break it or infect it, you can restore it instantly to its prior state. keep up the good fight jim, legend.

Nice. That makes sense, thanks ๐Ÿ˜Š

I don't know exaclty how Jim does it, but I know from watching similar youtubers it involves a combination of a virtual machine (basically your computer making a fake computer within itself, running it like a program) and making their own fake banking websites. I know Jim uses a virtual machine, probably does something similar for banking.

Brilliant. I love everything about this. I don't understand computers very well, so it makes me nervous when you give these assholes access to your computer and you watch them look at your banking info and passwords. How do you make sure they don't get any of the info?

Jessicah Jones

Keep destroying them and keep up the good work! Always nice to login from time to time and to catch up on these.

for me it's finally time to start putting money into things I believe in

Hey Jim youโ€™re doing a great job by the way. Everyone appreciates everything you do

Hello fellow pratreonians

That's kinda what it's like in this house, except I'm unlocking everyone else's device. Technology.....

Jim Browning

I wanted to watch this video for days, but Patreon says I had to pay to unlock it. So I checked my bank and saw that the payments were going out so I screen shot them and was in the middle of commposing a "Karen "style strongly worded e-mail to Patreon when my daughter asked me what was wrong...then she took my computer, sighed, hit a few keys and handed it back to me unlocked and walked away shaking her head...lol.....I hate kids

Thanks Jim that's an awesomely positive result. Let's hope Vivian's passed on her story to many others!

Keep up the good work and hopefully police will put them in prison for a long time. !

i am proud to be a financial supporter , please contact me if you need a bunny ,im australian

Isn't there a way for all phone companies to realize where the origin of the call is from? And have "accept calls from India" as an option that can be turned off? Seems with all the technology in the world this would be easy to prevent. Or maybe these technology companies can be help responsible for paying back victims. Thank you Jim....uhhh....I mean Dave.

Will you make some kind of "what i/we did accomplish so far" Video? I would kinda like to see where your efforts lead some times. Like did some of the scam centers got taken down or so? Idk how hard it would be to make this kind of rewind because i dont know if you get any infos after you report those scammers to the police, fbi or so ^^

Oliver Ebbing

Great work Jim. I wonder if there's a way we can collectively make Zoho listen? Maybe if we all email them? Start a petition? Especially with the lockdown, if we look at the bother zoom has been getting regarding security, surely it can't be that difficult to impress upon Zoho that they correct their ways? What do you think?

Fortunately there are lot more good people.

Hi Jim, Just now I subscribed to your Gold Member and I am very pleased with your commitment to catching scammers. I am originally from India and sorry to see that most of the scammers are from India.

Nice work Jim

"I know a few things about comouters." ๐Ÿ†understatement of the year.

While I occasionally watch others for pure entertainment, it's clear to me that all they're doing is irritating the scammers. You, on the other hand, always look at the big picture and at all the connections which allow them to carry out their scams. It's very satisfying to see some of these connections severed, but it's also disheartening to see the sheer strength and variety of the ecosystem in which they exist, enabled by weak laws and corrupt police. Given the difficulty of actually getting them prosecuted, it's not surprising there isn't an international task force monitoring them to collect evidence. However, considering the amount of money they siphon from other countries, I'm surprised there isn't a discreet task force going after them in a less orthodox manner and systematically sabotaging them. You're doing some great work filling that vacuum.

Iri

Nice work Jim!

Surely if you get an email like this the first thing you'd do is check your paypal app

Russ Walker

This was good save for this lady. It was interesting to watch you go behind the scenes exposing this scammer which you do so well with clear explanations of what we are witnessing. Iโ€™m glad I support you on Patreon

Excellent job sir. But permit me to offer a couple of suggestions: All the stolen information that you are gathering, please let it get to your local government official and hopefully it will get to the departments that handles fraud in America (like Consumer Protection Agency etc.). I hope Consumer Protection Agency can let all information this get to the congress, especially how much on the average, these scammers are making and the untold hardship that is being meted out to our senior citizens and retirees at their old age. The goal is to get the Federal Government to sign a treaty or law at the UN with these countries, stating that the host countries of scammers HAVE to refund all these stolen money to the US government. So weather you save the money or not from being stolen, your efforts will not be in vain by the scamer's government being made to be responsible for the amount stolen. The government of scammer citizen countries needs to be responsible for their citizen's actions overseas. And perhaps, after gathering all the data and recorded video evidences, please try to block the scammer's ability to transfer money out of their accounts. You could develop software tools that can record the voice of the scammer and let an automated script take communication over with the scammer whenever you need to save the victim by discussing with her. It could be in form of a malware that infects the scammer's computer so he is kept busy sorting out what happened while you gain time to save the innocent victims. No doubt, you are doing a wonderful job. God bless you sir.

Strangely enough, I too am now getting a glass of water or a coffee!

Steve Witt

This is why I support you! You inspire me. I'm getting my Bachelors in Cybersecurity right now and this makes me want to scambait. Keep up the good work!

Try using the abuse email that is below the one you used. Apparently Hathway is a subsidiary of Bharti.com. Contact them at abuse@bharti.com

You are a saint. You must get tremendous satisfaction from the good work you are doing. I know I do just watching you work! I hope you get enough patrons and benefactors to do this as a full time job and hire a team of "Scam Busters".

A good video treat after my exam! Keep up the good work :)

Antonia Fourie

Amazing. Well done. Must be hard contacting the victim and ensuring they believe you and act in their favour. Great work Jim.

Great job Jim. Keep up the good work my friend!

That's just awesome. Shame on Zoho though.

Eric Darchis

Great work as always.

Tripodski

Well done sir. Please keep it up. Makes me sick knowing that these dirtbags are scamming money from seniors.

You're the best Jim! Im glad you fixed the process of explaining to the victim that they are getting scammed, so that they don't get confused! Keep it up!

Jim, I never share your content on patreon. I think it's important to get as many people to support you so sharing would be counter productive. Im really looking Foreward to this one. Thanks for continuing to make videos. Hope you and your family are safe.

Excellent work yet again Jim! Having had an elderly family member victimised by scammers in the past, any attempt to thrawt them makes me happy!

Seeing that little VMWare bar at the top always gets me excited for whatโ€™s to come!!!

If I ever get a suspicious call I will ask if they work with Jim Browning and scammer will hang up immediately

Patreon sucks

Always nice to see your great work! I noticed that you sounded more confident in explaining to the victim who you are, at least compared to the video you posted a while back where you were seeking advice. Do you think sounding more confident has improved your success rate? Also, are you getting close to your goal of doing this work full time?

SeaJay

Jim. You are a genius! I watch other scam baiters which helps me at my banking job to talk customers out of losing their hard earned dollars. For these people, I salute them because it gives me the scam knowledge to convince customers NOT to send their money. I do my share. But YOU do the unbelievable! You are my hero! Much appreciation from NEW JERSEY!!!!

Matthew B NJ

Once again, I am amazed by your skills! Thank you, Jim!

Great job Jim. Keep it up.

On behalf of seniors, thank you.

Jimmy Sarmiento

Great work Jim.

The only bright side to this Lock Down, is,that you have more time to do this stuff. ,Great Job as usual, Best wishes to you and your family, and keep safe.

Jim you're the BEST!! I really enjoy your the videos of your work.

Because sometimes the victim doesn't know who to believe and will blurt out this name to the scammer, thus alerting them. I actually still have access to this scammer and I doubt I still would if she had mentioned my name.

Jim Browning

Awesome, but why did you not go with "Jim Browning" to the Victims as it may be a familiar name since the BBC happened. Or you might ask them to confirm who and what you are by simply checking on YouTube :D Anyways, awesome work!

Dragendave

Bravo, my Man! So proud to be part of your work! Glad some of those service providers responded so quickly to the report.

Laurie Soper

Jim, you are a Saint! Keep up the good work.
