Scams and Cyber Security

For my Silver+ patrons, this is extra content.

I was asked to give a presentation on scams and Cyber Security to a group of young adults. We had a Microsoft Teams meeting where I presented some information on what scams were out there, what I observed about these scams and a bit about Cyber Security.

Some of this will be familiar if you're a long term viewer of my channel. It was aimed at young adults who were perhaps considering going into Cyber Security in the future.

I hope it's of interest to you too!

I hate that they couldn't wait till the end to ask questions. You had so much to say and provide but you did great with the interruption and stayed on target.

These naive kids are brainwashed to think like that. College professors mostly.

Hi Jim, i just wanted to take the time to say thanks for all that you do, my dad was nearly caught out by some of these scammers and it was only luck that i was there to pull the plug on his router as he was downloading team viewer that he avoided getting charged by these a-holes. Needless to say, i pointed him towards your YouTube channel

I am very excited at the notion that you have acquired, through the use of this excellent video, a new, young following. I am pleased at the notion that some of these folks will follow in your footsteps and enter the IT field. I am one of those old ladies who is trying to stay up with technology, but am very glad to have folks like you watching out for me and my friends!!

Great video, Jim. I’m going into information security and it’s nice to see that people are getting the info out there.

The next time you say that you are not as wonderful as everyone says you are. look around at all you do and have done and think again. Stay safe, Mate.......cheers, Robert

I would suggest starting with Virtual Machines, there is a huge amount of info online to get you going and lots of forums to find help. Once you have that figured out on one computer do the same on another one or get a friend to do it on their computer and download one of the many remote access programs on both virtual PC's and experiment with gaining access both ways. Keep backups of both virtual machines so it's simple to start from fresh if something goes wrong and set up new email and Google accounts with false identities on each VM for security, don't use any personal information on these accounts and never link your real accounts with them.

Hi Jim, the video is great work and perfect for the budding IT and Tech generation. however have you thought about creating a simple to the point videos for the older generation, something in bite size and practical chunks for those of the older generation, that may not be so computer savvy?

Listening/Watching while i'm doing an Assignment for Cyber Security IV, Getting inspired to do well, and get a job in the industry! Nice work.

Am I the only one slightly irked by the observation that the vast majority of their questions were in the lines of "shouldn't the government compensate people for their mistakes?" and "do you have any sympayhy for the scammers seeing that they originate from third world countries?" It's as if most of them didn't care about the cybersecurity aspect at all, just how to find ways to pass responsibility on to some "caretaker" figure and pity the perpetrators.

I wish the phone companies would check phone numbers when they call, i.e. check by checking by call checking them back - if the number is unrecognised or rings then it is likely false or spoofed. Keep up the good work JB.

Nice talk...you covered all the bases very clearly and had a great Q and A. Very nice of you to talk to students regarding this. It really adds to their education and motivates them.

Haven’t watched the full video yet but am looking forward to it. I enjoy this kind of generalized content and while it might not be well-suited to YouTube, I think a fair amount of your audience would get something from it. I’ve stumbled into the comment section enough times to see the “is Jim a script kiddie or a cyber god” debate is a common one. Hopefully younger and less experienced folks see that effective cyber isn’t about ‘shellz’ as much as accomplishing the desired effect. If TeamViewer had a horrible RCE vulnerability, does it matter how skilled you are? If scammers practices are so aggressive that they leave themselves open to a reverse shell, does it matter your skill? What matters is you’re able to do what you do. Really appreciate your measured and grounded approach, and glad to see you bringing your skills to the next generation.

The discussion about possible solutions was interesting. When the UK banking regulator made banks liable for faster payments fraud the banks were able to find the time to make a solution. For example the account name has to (approximately) match, you get lots of warnings about scams, you need to use a special one time pass word genarator etc..... If the phone companies were liable the'd soon enough implement a solution, there's no incentive to do it.

I haven't had a chance to watch this yet, but considering you say it for a younger group, I had a question for you. My son is interested in getting into computers, and the like, what would you recommend for someone wanting to get into the computer world? He's in 8th grade, starts high school next fall, so he's got plenty of time to figure it out. thanks.
