Stealing $2000 from scammers - Patreon version

Early access to the unblurred version!

Scammers love gift cards because they're almost untraceable. I noticed that they had scammed someone of $2,000 in Best Buy gift cards, so I took some action to stop these scammers by stealing their gift cards and returning them to their owner. With a bit of difficulty because I didn't know who had been scammed.

This is a Patron version of the video with lots of personal details of the scammers unblurred. I will have to create a blurred version on YouTube to prevent any "privacy" take-down notices from the scammers.

I believe that Best Buy were able to confirm that the card used to buy the cards (bought in person) were the same card details of the person who called. The scammers didn't know any details of the credit card used in the purchase. I think the money went back to the right person.

It seems like these are applications for children, but they've used the father's email address and cell phone numbers. So, it looks like the "father's name" is the name of the scammer.

I started with the branch that I nominated for the pickup (Bangor, Maine). They eventually put me through to someone in 'corporate'. I was almost 2hrs on the phone trying to sort this. Their direct gift card help number doesn't work. That didn't help.

I am very intrigued by the date of birth of the person you showedโ€”November 2006 means theyโ€™re not even 13 years old yet? Do you suspect to be a fake birthdate, stolen/used computer, or just a very young scammer? Iโ€™d love to know your thoughts on this.

Talk about quick thinking to get the cards invalidated before they could use them. Kristin also definitely deserves a commendation for her assistance in this as well. Ideally they should've had a way to refund the purchase back to another gift card rather than to the original cards, then figure out a way to transfer whatever you couldn't spend up front.

Great work Jim as always. Nice to see a Customer Service representative who actually listened, instead of washing their hands of the problem behind irrelevant company policies.
