Patrons only: My presentation to the PSCU

I was asked to give a talk to some of the USA's Credit Union leaders (PSCU) on fraud, so I recorded the presentation so that you, my Patrons, could also have a look at what I spoke to them about and how I answered some of their questions.

If you're a regular viewer of my channel, you'll probably know a lot of this already, but my hope was to open up the debate on how to better safeguard Bank or Credit Union accounts.

It was part of a wider discussion on fraud, so I've only kept in the parts which I presented just in case there's something sensitive there.

I hope you find this interesting and I hope that some of their processes may change with the better awareness of how the scams work.

I do all of this for nothing; spreading awareness of scams is my aim, so this Patreon support is essential for me.

Thank you for supporting me with this aim.

Jim

I hate to "dog" on anyone it's so unkind but not knowing WHO your audience was I need to be gentle, depending on the audience for this YOUR webinar, their attention is probably going to be more along the line of "oh crap, this is good to know" from a personal perspective and they will take action for themselves in their own tech envrionment at home... I'm holding back a bit, unwilling to air dirty laundry (so to speak)...AWKWARD!!!

"Eye opening" is an understatement. Wow. Great presentation, Jim. In reagrds to the list of compromised credit cards you mentioned, have you contacted Visa, MC, AMEX, etc, to provide them that list so they can verify the info themselves?

This was a very good presentation. Thank you for sharing! I'm so happy to see that some officials are wanting to sap some of your knowledge and experience in order to improve how they work in regards to either combating scams, or helping support those who are either experiencing a scam or have been scammed. Have you had any follow up from this at all? Have they remained in touch with you?

The only difference is that I have added "geo IP" (https://wiki.wireshark.org/HowToUseGeoIP) and removed some unnecessary columns from the view. Other than that it's an out of the box version of Wireshark.

Jim Browning

Your wireshark seems to give you different information than mine, I had someone help me set up my VM and Wireshark , I use statistics/endpoints and it seems to ID the incoming . Do you have something different running on your Wireshark ?

Do these scammers pay any tax ? Do they deduct tax and social security from their 'employees' wages ? Since this might be the reason why India does nothing.. as its another income source

Ramon M

indeed, something smart must be done. These greedy idiots are damaging India's image that could take decades to fix and have far reaching consequences that will harm her and her law biding citizens.

Hey Jim great to know you. Fantastic work you do please keep it up to help those that are not quite computer savvy. Will help you any way I can although I expect you wouldn't need my help. Love the YouTube videos, so keep them coming. I have a lot of admiration for you and love to see and hear the scammers squeal

The Indian authorities should get serious about these scammers. At some point legitimate companies will stop using Indian call centers when their customers are reluctant to engage with them.

Thanks Andy... Out of interest, are you any good at filling phishing forms with dummy data? If so, I have a nice project....

Hey Jim, I’m sure you get asked this all the time: Apart from contributing, how can we help? I’m skilled technically with a lot of time on my hands. Is there something people like me can be doing? Like a small army of minions running simple code or gathering information for you? Please give me a purpose again! 😃

Sorry to hear that they managed to get you. It is incredibly easy to happen and I literally see it every day. I'm attempting to contact lots of people that I can see have been scammed by an organisation I'm currently tracking. It's a pity I wasn't doing this year's ago because I can see that the need is there.

Jim Browning

I joined you not much as OAP. I like what you are doing as I have been scammed about 10 years ago. Thank you and get as many as you can. Take care Anthony

it is all individuals losing that money, and how much social power do little old ladies have? the very last bit says it... the scammers don't even act on credit card info obtained, because the multibillion-dollar legal entities that own them, are able to marshal the power of law enforcement to protect them, the way ordinary people can't

I find it staggering that the scamming business does not have wider detailed awareness and that officials and the public are so far behind on the curve. People with power are so out of touch. All you have to do to get people to take notice is to shout the revenue figures.

Syd

As Jim implies, the big problem is that many of the officials in India are corrupt. It's big income for the country in general as well as individual officials. The way to combat this is increased awareness (details with examples are important) among the public in the victim countries. Another name for it is 'education'. What allowed this to happen is VoIP and free international calling; the telecoms industry is responsible for this method of crime and should clean it up.

Syd

Well done, Jim.

Oh Jim Browning! (I was naive and thought that was your real name :D ). Surely we need to be lobbying our MPs? we need the cooperation of the authorities in India otherwise these scams will continue to grow.

Very valuable work, Jim. Getting the banks and credit unions to take action is always going to be the biggest challenge. More power to your keyboard! :-)

Doug Edworthy

Great speech Jim :-) Very nicely done my friend !

Great work Jim. I hope those folks listen and make it easier to freeze accounts quickly that are being used for fraud.

Very nice stuff Jim, I said it before and I will say it again.......You the man

ROBERT CROMER

You did a great job on this presentation Jim! I bet the $1.8 million a month in revenues figure floored them.

Mostafa

Much obliged. I'm very positive when financial institutions are paying attention to this type of fraud. Definitely encouraging.

Jim Browning

brilliant work

Fabulous presentation!

Nicely done, Jim.

Good to see desire from financial institution to educate themselves. In relation to refund scummer, is it possible for banks to have theire webpage refresh automaticly every 10 seconds or block posibility to edit information?

Aliaksei Ivanov
