Patreon asked me if I wanted to contribute to their Pride celebration. Clearly, I said yes. I was tasked with implementing the color green from the Pride flag into an illustration. One of the first images I saw in my head was the Emerald City, from The Wizard of Oz! I thought it would be cute to show a festive Pride celebration outside the fields of the Emerald City, with a little quartet of characters that were subtle homages to the four main characters from the film.
You can see the post on their IG here and learn more about my thought process here. I owned a VHS of The Wizard of Oz when I was a wee lad and I rewatched that movie over and over and over again. I think the glitz and camp really won me over. As I mentioned on Patreon's IG, there is something about the story that resonates with the LGBTQIA+ community. The misunderstood coming together to grow and learn and better themselves as a family? That's the Rainbow Alphabet as fuck.
I'm including the other sketch ideas I had for this assignment. The top left sketch was a nod to all the new plant daddies, mommies, and parents out there who needed a new hobby during the pandemic. Green stands for nature in the Pride flag so I thought this would be a nice nod to that, while capturing a slice of queer life. The top right sketch was the simplest: a few couplings of cute queers laying back at the park, enjoying the sun and company. I think the goal for all of these was to spark joy and represent joy. I hope I achieved that. Happy Pride, ya rascals!
