Day 20 - 30 Day Challenge: Orono Munroe
Added 2021-05-01 21:04:38 +0000 UTCI have a feeling some of you may be less excited by my gala designs because they’re a little more real world than larger than life cape comics might necessitate. Either way I hope you enjoy!
It’s hard drawing characters outside of their normal parameters (hero costumes, obvious insignia or symbols to indicate a character). I definitely understand that for the sake of clarity and communication, you have to keep a character within a fairly narrow range of looks to signify which hero you’re looking at. That could mean utilizing their iconic colors, hairstyles, silhouettes, etc. If you saw this picture without a title, would you be able to tell who she is? Probably not, though the white hair is definitely a trait specific to Storm. Being unencumbered by a lot of the restriction of creating gala looks for a real X-book means I can be much more subdued in my approach (hence, perhaps, a less exciting garment). But with all my X-fashion pieces (since the dawn of tumblr), I’ve tried to prioritize the character’s personality + fashion. Is there a reason to draw Storm in a classic white garment other than the fact that her uniform has been white in he past? No, other than for the sake of clarity.
I tried to play off elements of her white uniform without being toooo obvious about it. Big shoulders, some kind of cape element down the back, gold accents, an off-white mauve pink in a flat fabric.
I’ll be drawing these as I find the time, and as the inspiration comes to me. But just to turn it over to you: who do you want to see next?
