South Africa - A Revolution Betrayed

In this episode we look at the nature of the deal that ended apartheid, the strength and sacrifices of the South African working class and the political trajectory of the ANC. We also draw on Lenin's analysis of "spontaneity" and Trotsky's concept of "permanent revolution" to shed light on the class struggle within South Africa.

Thanks Felicity! Yeah, it’s quite a fiasco and many people have really suffered from these lockdowns. Of course my reason for breaking the rules is a bit silly (I went to meet Alex and go for a hike) but it’s the same rules that have meant people had to spend their last few moment alone or have been separated from love ones, or have suffered real mental health issues.

We have all been placed under house arrest with limited outings for “exercise” and strictly “NO SINGING AND DANCING!!” where I live after escaping up to now with very minimal lockdowns and virtually noone wearing a mask. We now have people driving solo but masked, that’s of course when they ARE allowed out briefly, thanks to ONE NEW COVID CASE. It couldn’t be more obvious that this is now just another endemic respiratory virus, and most people have nothing to fear. But everyone has become weirdly accustomed to the idea that we are all individually responsible for everyone else’s health. The less there is real responsibility and care for others, the more we are individually held responsible for everyone else’s health and well-being! I really agree that its important to not go along with all this wherever possible. Other people do gain strength from seeing that you don’t have to comply.
