Heartstopper Episode 8

Heartstopper Episode 8

As regards suggestions, I recommend Prisma, a truly beautiful Italian series, broadcast on Prime (for two seasons with a probable third), which fits into this new generation of queer representation.

Heartstopper certainly began a new era in Western gay and Queer representation. The problems of everyday life, homophobia, bullying, mental health problems exist and are addressed in an important way but at the same time Alice wanted to give a representation in which positivity prevails in the end. The message is that even queer love stories, even among the youngest, can be happy stories! It is an important message also for our/my generation who in the 90s or even earlier were unable to have these experiences. And this is why today Heartstopper has had a great impact and following even on older people, arousing a sense of happiness and comfort on the one hand and melancholy on the other for something that many of us were not able to experience during adolescence .

I can't wait for season 2!

So much third this.

Pam R

I seriously second this!

Megan Brady

I would highly recommend Dead Boy Detectives. It is a supernatural, queer delight.

The reason I found BL was because I was looking for queer stories that represented the other side of the coin. There's an abundance of dramas and films portraying the hardships, traumas and difficulties of queer life to the point I felt like they were starting to feel like cautionary tales; where were the success stories, the love stories with happy endings that het culture have had since the beginning of fiction? When I found things like Heartstopper, and Thai BL it made me feel hopeful. I know that might sound silly, but just seeing happy, loving, successful queer relationships in the media made validated. I can't wait to see your reaction to season 2.

I really enjoy Heartstopper. Nick and Charlie actually began as side characters in Alice Oseman's debut novel Solitaire which follows Charlie's sister. I'm a similar age to Alice Oseman and I remember reading about Solitaire in the newspaper because they wrote it whilst doing their A levels (age 17-18) and it got really good reviews. They started playing around and drawing Nick and Charlie as comics and ended up posting those on tumblr and eventually it got published as a graphic novel. I feel like Alice was at the beginning of the era of queer fiction becoming more mainstream in books and now I can actually go into my bookshop and find loads of queer fiction in a range of genres. I love that they wrote the screenplays too which preserved that special thing Alice's stories have- a sort of quiet normalcy about all the characters that is incredibly relatable. They also wrote the first ever book I read with an asexual main character (Loveless) which meant a lot to me. I 100% relate to what you said about BLs vs Western dramas. For so long almost all the queer stories I found and binged were coming out stories and very serious. I found a couple of indie gay comedies but there was a lot of scouring the internet and most queer stories came with a side of depression and trauma. They were important stories but there weren't any fun or cute stories that were gay or queer- which I think is why fanfiction took such a chokehold of people my age. The first BL I discovered I was like wait they can actually make fanfiction style stories into dramas??? And I've been watching ever since. I'm glad the BL genre is diversifying, but I also love that I now have so many stories I can watch that are cute and silly and sometimes heartfelt and also have queer main characters. I do feel like we're beginning to turn a corner and get queer stories that aren't all only Queer Stories in Western dramas but just stories with queer characters, and I think the massive success of Heartstopper has a part to play in that as well.
