Progress Report
Added 2020-09-06 14:53:05 +0000 UTCAs the week wraps up, it's time for another progress report.
My focus is still on renders. I should really try not to say anything about exactly what I'm making, but I can't wait until you see [REDACTED] and how it all fits into [REDACTED] alongside [REDACTED]'s [REDACTED]. It's going to be [REDACTED]!
As you can tell, it can be quite challenging to share anything about plot developments that I'd rather keep secret until you see them for yourselves. Suffice to say, I'm making progress with the new images and can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel now. Of course, no writing or code has been done yet. I'm saving that for last, but it's all mapped out (or so I hope).
In other news, I'm sure many of you heard about the announcement for new graphics cards from Nvidia this week. To me, the announcements were like a dream come true. As I believe I mentioned last time I upgraded my GPU, about two years ago, the most significant limitation when working on LLtP is my GPU's VRAM. In other words, the complexity of the scenes I can make rely entirely on how much memory is present on the graphics card. The new RTX 3090 announced this week has a whopping 24 GB of VRAM, a massive increase over my current RTX 2080Ti with its 11 GB. With 24 GB, there is almost no limit to what I can do with my scenes. Most importantly, I can render scenes with larger groups of people, which is good news for those hoping for something more advanced than threesomes in this game.
Supply will be limited at first, but I will do my best to get a card from the first batch towards the end of this month. If I can manage that, then that bodes well for what I'll be able to add to version 0.34, an update that would definitely benefit from me being able to render crowds. I can't wait.
Anyway, that's it for now. Let's see how much I can get done in the coming week.
Until next time!

Thank you for the kind words. Glad to have you on board. :)
2020-09-09 08:10:41 +0000 UTCDear Belle, I have followed you for quite some time now. Sometimes sponsoring, sometimes just leaching. But all the time I've been absolutely amazed at the quality of work you produce. Both storytelling, building relatable characters, and the quality of the visuals has always been in a class of your own. Now when we are getting closer to the finish, I think it is right that I pay for the experience that you have provided and I'll be supporting you on a higher tier to make up for lost time. Thank you!

2020-09-08 21:00:03 +0000 UTCWell the rumors are out there about a new Titan being announced in 3-6 months and the Ti's will be even after that. I do not work at Nvidia though, so have no hard data, just hear the rumors. Considering price, even the 3070 is priced to highly for just a regular gamer with a budget pc. Was quite a disappointment there was no 3060 announced yet, then again after having used nvidia cards for 20 years now I am used to them releasing loads of different cards in later series to squeeze every bit out of a generation of cards at every price range. The 3090 for gaming would only have as advertisement it is native 8K. No clue though how many people already own 8K monitors and good enough eyes to need one. :P Then again for them that card is likely cheap anyway.

2020-09-07 16:19:27 +0000 UTCThe 3090 *is* the new Titan. Nvidia said as much in their presentation. They've just streamlined the name since the Titan brand has always been confusing, even to me. What you're thinking of is probably the expected Ti models next year. I would expect the 3090 to be the top model until the next generation of GPUs. And honestly, the 3090 isn't really good value for money for most people. It's designed for hobbyists like me who use it for non-gaming applications. Gamers wouldn't get much, if any, benefit from the increased VRAM, and the expected less than 20% speed increase over the 3080 isn't worth doubling the price over. The 3080 is fantastic value for money, however, and Nvidia knows it.
2020-09-07 14:23:27 +0000 UTCIf you really have the money, some are expecting an announcement about the replacement for the RTX Titan in 3-6 months from now. I do not know how good that info is, but that card should beat the 3090 by about as much as the titan did the 2080Ti to get that sweet extra money for Nvidia. :) Though to be honest the 3090 already sounds almost to good to be true for that price.

2020-09-06 15:58:41 +0000 UTCMy 2080Ti takes up 2.5 slots, so the 3090 will hardly be worse. Yes, it fits. I've made sure. While I appreciate the sentiment, I wasn't really asking for advice in my post. I know what I want and why I want it. A single 3090 will offer more VRAM and better rendering speed than a pair of 2080 Ti's, most likely, at a fraction of the hassle. As a bonus, I could even use it for gaming in a way that a pair of 2080 Ti's could not. This isn't my first rodeo on the hardware market. ;)
2020-09-06 15:58:00 +0000 UTCIf space is an issue, are you sure you'll be able to fit the 3090? All of the AIC variants are pretty long (315-340mm) and 3 slots standard. Also, I should note the NVLink benefit is not theoretical, there are several Daz artists in the community that moved on it as soon as iray was updated to support memory pooling. Lockheart has dual 2080's on NVLink, and Alorth has two 2080ti's, both doing so primarily for the boost in VRAM and both happy with the result. I'm not trying to be pushy, but I know the 3090's are going to be hard to come by since nvidia is more focused on the 3080 and the two are built on the same processor (3080 just with core clusters disabled and fewer RAM chips). 2080ti on the other hand is flooding the used market right now.

2020-09-06 15:44:02 +0000 UTCThere are so many downsides (and problems) to that kind of thing (including the fact that I'd need to upgrade my entire computer, and probably ditch one of my PCI cards, to even fit something like that inside it.) No, I'm not doing SLI or NVLink.
2020-09-06 15:18:19 +0000 UTCI don't want or need a 3070 Ti. Thanks to the generous patronage of people like you, I have the ability to go for the best cards available to maximize my creative output. I'm going to get a 3090. If I don't get one in the first wave, I'll wait until they're available again.
2020-09-06 15:16:43 +0000 UTCYou should look into recent leads from Lenovo about some 3070 ti with 16GB of VRAM. There is no release date though (yet)

2020-09-06 15:12:42 +0000 UTCIf you can't manage to snag a 3090, 2080ti have gotten significantly cheaper and they support NVLink, and since February Daz3D's iray support the NVLink VRAM pooling. It's not purely additive, but with a second 2080ti (at less than half its original retail price) and an NVLink bridge you can get around 19GB of usable VRAM.
