Progress Report #3 - 0.9

Oh boy, creating version 0.9 has been a frustrating, demanding process. It's definitely been the most mentally exhausting update I've made so far for this game, and I'm far from done.

Usually, when I create these updates, I spend most of the first two weeks of the month making renders, with the final two weeks focused more on writing, scripting, and testing. This time it has been the other way around. The first week was spent designing the "layout" of the update, so to speak. After that, I've done almost nothing but writing and scripting, though there have been some essential renders as well. I had writer's block for several days this week, which is annoying as hell since it grinds the entire development to a complete halt. I got past it though, thankfully.

So far I'm counting 55 renders for this version, though this will likely increase before the end of the month.

However, it's becoming increasingly clear 0.9 won't get anywhere near concluding its storylines. In fact, it looks like 0.9 will have little sexy stuff compared to most of the recent updates. On the other hand, it makes up for it in gameplay and story. There are no less than three separate secrets for you to break in this update. One of them is really straightforward while the other two take slightly more to figure out. I'm currently counting 10 new clues for you to discover in the process.

This is all well and good. What's going to be missing is likely the consequences of solving these secrets. Remove Inhibitions, and some of the developments in personal stories may end up being pretty bare bones at first, allowing me to really put some effort into them for version 0.10 instead. I'll add as much as I can, but I still have so much writing left to do that I have my doubts I'll be able to perform miracles.

If you wish, you may think of versions 0.9 and 0.10 as being two halves of a whole. They'll build directly upon each other and make for a (hopefully) satisfying development in the stories of both Samarra and Primrose. Nell is going to get involved in all of this too, but not in 0.9.

TLDR: Expect lots of story and puzzles in 0.9 but not as much sexy business as usual.

Until next time!

I have well-established methods that work for me at this point, and they're actually not like that at all. I deliberately avoid writing ideas down until they've solidified in my mind, reasoning that if I forget it, it probably wasn't good to begin with. I only start writing it down once I know it's good and I need to fill in details that are hard to figure out with just an overview.

When an idea comes into your head write a bullet point / reminder straight away, That way you have something to come back to to jog your memory as to were you were going with those particular thoughts :) . And as eluded to above bridgeing is not a bad idea.So you have created your start middle and end sequence ,then fill in the gaps gives a purpose as writting on the fly you can easily loose your way

yeah... I got to admit I don't really live what I preach in this case I start trying to work through it and then I falter and end up procrastinating. I posted the first page of a webcomic a month ago, I still haven't finished the second. I really should get to it. Even that was a procrastinating attempt to do over on a fanfic in novel form I haven't touched in a year.

Yeah, I have experience in dealing with writer's block from novel writing, and what you're saying is absolutely true. That's also the way I dealt with it in this case, though the negative effects of it are still present. It sucks motivation and enthusiasm away from the writer, which sucks but just has to be dealt with. It all comes back once you're past what caused the block though.

In my experience the only way to get past a writers block is to write. Either just skip the part you can't decide on and keep writing the stuff you do know the connection between these islands will fill themselves out as you put them down on paper or write it even if you know what you are writing is crap, you can always go back and make an acceptable version later. You in the general sense of the word obviously.

Thanks! I'll do my very best. :)

Well, so long as the work doesn't adversely affect your needs - I believe all of us can be content :). Furthermore, I must say it is rare to find projects made to such a high standard which yours I believe continues to accomplish. That said, all I can say to you is - "keep up the good work!" :D

I'm not delaying anything, by the way. I am proud of my ability to deliver monthly working releases of the game, and I will continue to do so. That doesn't mean every monthly release will be comparable to the others in all ways, but I will always deliver. 0.9 isn't a small update by any means, but its focus is distinctly different from the previous versions which have been far more straightforward in both writing and story.

That's not really what my post was about, but I appreciate the sentiment. I'm talking about the kind of frustration any writer gets when they reach a point where they can't make the pieces fit properly. It feels like hitting a brick wall. The situation can feel impossible to solve until the exact moment you do just that. The kind of work I've been doing these last few weeks has often consisted of just staring at the screen, trying to make my ideas work. I've heard it said of developers that when they look like they're doing the least work, that's when they're actually working their hardest.

Ensuring a healthy work/life balance is of prime importance. Otherwise one cannot possibly expect the work itself to "stand up to scratch", so to speak. So as long as one keeps their personal needs satisfied, I and many others would be content as it would ensure that the project will continue steaming along with little risk of abandonment (due to frustration, health issues and so-on so forth). But hey, if you feel that the next version doesn't stand-up to your satisfaction - do not be afraid to delay it until it does. As they say, patience is its own aphrodisiac... ;)
