Status Report and More

Hello everyone! I have lots of things to talk about today so this will be a long update, though I'll try to keep it as short as I can. I have been silent for a little while because I have been waiting for the dust to settle after this month's round of charges at Patreon. More on that below.

The Road to 0.5

I messed up with 0.4. It's not that I consider the update itself to be bad in any way, but my own estimates of what I would be able to do with 0.4 when I first started working on it, were way off. I promised features that I expected to have no trouble implementing in time, and this resulted in me having to work my ass off through almost the entire holidays to catch up with the most modest of my estimates. Truthfully though, this is nothing new, and I should have expected that it would happen. My day job is in software development. Estimating development time is a central part of what I do at work, and I tend to underestimate how much time is needed to implement features there too. Something needs to change, both for the sake of you, my patrons, and for the sake of my sanity as I develop this game.

I have decided to do the following until I get a better handle on things and can create better estimates: I will no longer tell you in advance what I expect the next version to contain, at least not in any great detail. My ambitions tend to get the better of me and that's not good for anyone. Those are the bad news. The good news is that I will be much more forthcoming about what I have already implemented, starting today. Roughly once every week, you will receive an update from me where I talk about what I have done so far. These are features you will see in the next version, allowing me to focus on maximizing the quality of the game without having to stress out over deadlines that benefit nobody. You still get a version every month, of course. There will be no changes there. They won't get any smaller either. This just keeps development more flexible and less stressful. The game will get much better for it.

So, without further ado, here are the things I have been doing for 0.5 since the release of 0.4: (I try to avoid spoiling anything important, but if you want to remain completely spoiler free, skip this list of bullet points and read on from the "Pledges and Fraud" header below)

Pledges and Fraud

If you've been following the development of this Patreon, you might have seen that we dropped dramatically at the beginning of this month. We were nearly at $1,850 in pledges, only to fall almost all the way to $1,600 in a day. This sucks, of course, but it is also entirely normal. Some pledges just don't go through for any number of reasons. Some people also drop their pledges at the beginning of the month, having intended to only pledge for a limited time. Others straight up commit fraud. This was a bit of a shock to me this time around as this campaign has been spared from fraudulent pledges until now. $86 out of the lost pledges at the beginning of the month were fraudulent. I don't know exactly what this means, but I assume it could be stuff like stolen credit cards. Apart from that, $104 in pledges went away because of declines. Last month, only $10 in pledges was lost due to declines, and nothing due to fraud. We doubled the size of the Patreon campaign in just one month, but the number of pledges that failed to go through was multiplied by almost 20! At the time of writing, we have just caught up with the loss. It's a bit of a setback to be sure, but nothing too dramatic.

One thing I would like to make clear, however, is that many people make pledges to Patreon campaigns, download their rewards, then pull the pledge before they can be charged for it. This can be okay in some instances. Real life can sometimes cause unforeseen problems requiring people to reconsider their economy, and I understand if a Patreon campaign for an adult game is the most straightforward post in the budget to cut. That's fine. However, it's when these pulled pledges become a pattern that this no longer is fine. Let me state for the record that I keep notes of every patron who creates "fake" pledges like these. If it becomes a pattern for someone, that person is blocked. Permanently. This will be my one and only warning on this subject. The vast, vast majority of you guys are fantastic, and I can't thank you enough for your pledges, but there is a tiny number of people souring the experience. If they think I don't notice what they are doing, they are wrong. I notice every single time, and I keep notes.

The $10 and $20 reward levels

I've been neglecting you guys, I know. I'm sorry. My only excuse is that I've been so laser-focused on releasing 0.4 that everything else fell by the wayside, but that isn't really good enough. You deserve better. For those of you pledging at the $10 level, you can look forward to some juicy behind-the-scenes stories this month. For those of you at the $20 level, expect more previews. I will also try to create high-quality renders where I can. I am also going to contact each $20 level patron, both the current ones and those who have pledged at this level previously, to ask whether or not you want your names in the credits and what name you want to display, if so. Keep an eye on your inboxes. Please note that you will not be asked about this until your $20 pledge is successfully processed at the beginning of each month since this is the level where people create the most fraudulent pledges.

2017 in Review

It's hard to believe that I only started this campaign back in September of 2017. It's been just a little over 3 months, but it already feels like a lifetime. Thinking about what we're going to accomplish in 2018 makes me giddy with anticipation. We began with version 0.1, replaced within a few hours by 0.101. This version contained almost nothing but the tutorial and the first few interactions with Evelyn. How far we have come since then. Two weeks later I released 0.15, which focused on Callie. Two weeks after that saw the release of 0.2, which focused on Primrose. One month after that, 0.3 was released, overhauling most parts of the game, extending the main storyline, and giving Belle some naughty action of her own. And at the end of December, I officially released 0.4 for patrons, focusing on the two previously unintroduced girls Samarra and Nell. There is still a LOT to come, and there are many girls you have yet to see. I can't wait to continue working on this throughout the coming year, and I'm really looking forward to sharing this journey with you guys. I'm so thankful for what you have done for me so far. These have been an incredible few months.

Game Recommendation

Finally, I'd like to use the opportunity to recommend an adult game I recently played that I think many of you might appreciate while waiting for the next version of Long Live the Princess. Rest assured that I won't post recommendations all that often, but sometimes I stumble upon something that sticks out with its quality and promise, and want to make sure people hear about it. This is one of those times.

The game is called Depraved Awakening, and it's a noir detective mystery. It is very well put together, and the developer strikes me as incredibly dedicated and passionate about what he does. I played the latest version a few days ago, and now I'm eagerly waiting for more. The graphics are of a high quality and varied as well, the music is fitting and sets the proper tone, and the story is intriguing and takes things in a different direction from most adult games. You can find the game over at the developer's Patreon

Decent gameplan imo. The Patreon pay up front model should be available to everyone, it's just another example of the way they do things over there. If I were a new creator, I'd make 10 accounts and see which one gave me the option and go from there.

If I knew how to make heart-eye emoji without a widget, you'd see a thousand of them here! Much thanks and some serious FEY adoration for you right now for that answer! I find your conditions, perfectly acceptable, lol

ForeverFree2Me

Yes, I do have plans for pregnancy at some point. :) It will be completely optional, of course, and it would require dealing with that pesky Contraceptive spell.

As I'm not a dev myself, I can only assure you both that based upon my many, MANY, years of dealing with devs, you all are the opposite of Mr. Scotty- 4 hours = 4 days! LMAO, having said that, I've nothing but love for the 21st century's novelists. Keep it up you heathens! And BTW, LLTP is awesome. Though on a personal wish-list note, I do hope there may be some form of pregnancy in play at a some point! I won't hold it against you if not, but I dearly hope for it ! :* :*

ForeverFree2Me

All good. don't worry about it. I always appreciate the support.

PhillyGames

Yes, it's possible, but Patreon considers this feature to be "beta" and only gives it to creators under certain secret conditions. I have no idea when I'll get access to it.

I have often been billed mid-month when signing on to a new creator; it's definitely possible. (Obviously you run the risk of some people choosing to not want to join mid or late in the month, since they will pay a full fee for a partial month.)

Dubsington

Just found out I did the same thing with your game phillygames. Sincere apologies. Wont happen again.

Mouton

If I could set up my Patreon page like that, I would do it in a heartbeat. I'm amazed that Patreon keeps such basic functionality away from creators.

Oh, my bad, I thought you had it set up so you donated immediately on pledging. If people are downloading before paying, then yeah, screw 'em.

Dubsington

What I'm doing with fake pledges is nothing I haven't been doing since I started. I'm not hunting for them. I'm simply weeding out the ones that are *obviously* taking advantage of the system. Regular patrons have nothing to fear. I'm not putting myself in an adversarial position with the people who give me money, far from it. I'm putting myself in an adversarial position with those who *don't* give money but pretend that they do. Had I said nothing, you would never have known about it. The point behind the message in this update was simply to inform the bad ones that I see them and that I know what they're doing. It doesn't mean I'm changing my approach to anything.

Good idea about putting less detail in your prediction. Always better to surprise the users with more rather than with less :) Funny story: A PM in a software shop I used to work in had a funny way of setting dates: She'd find the least experienced member of the team (ideally an intern) and ask *their* estimate. She would then double it, and raise it to the next unit of time (2 days -> 4 weeks, 4 weeks -> 8 months, etc). She'd found that because the senior developers knew how to pad things, their estimates were either dead on or wildly inaccurate (about a 40/60 split), but applying her formula to a consistently naive estimate worked pretty well. Also, if I may offer some unasked-for advice (again, sorry): I'm a little disheartened to hear that you're going to be putting effort into tracking pledge patterns. I'm afraid that I don't think this is going to have much win in it. I can imagine almost no plausible scenario in which someone who was pledge-sniping decides to do a continuous pledge because of fear of this; they'll simply download a pirated version of the game instead (or if you are lucky, snipe again but with a different Patreon account/card). IMHO, you should think very very carefully before putting yourself in an adversarial position with people giving you money. It's true that some people are paying more than others for similar results, but it's also true that this doesn't hurt the other patrons whatsoever. You're simply denying yourself a small amount of revenue and spending time unproductively, and what's much worse it creates unhealthy drama in the community. That's a lot of cost for what is most likely a nonexistent gain. Please reconsider! Some patrons (and creators for that matter) use Patreon as a software store rather than as a "patron-of-the-arts" model. It's unfortunate, but if you want to fight it I think the juice just isn't worth the squeeze.

Dubsington

It seems to be a trend in software development, at least if myself or any of my coworkers over the years are representative of the common developer. ;)

"I will no longer tell you in advance what I expect the next version to contain, at least not in any great detail." Sounds fine to me. I was never bothered if some things didn't make it in, but if it was pressuring you then I'd prefer you only mention what's finished. Just keep the quality up, and keep us updated on how things are going, and I'll be happy. I also work in software development and am equally horrible at estimating work.

Seen it a lot on Patreon. SOME people try to milk the system

Sural Argonus

Many Patreon campaigns are like that. Sadly, this is a feature that Patreon doesn't give to just about anyone. New creators have to live with charges either on the first of each month or when you make a new paid post. It's a really shitty situation, but it is what it is.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. As I said, I don't worry about incidents like that. The people who need to worry are the ones who deliberately do this month after month.

sometimes some people are unexpect out of jobs, or have few less hours works and found have less money have little choice to end pledge

Michael Bowen

It might just be some kind of December thing, with most people having a tighter budget.

I see a fluctuation as well. It's just the way it goes. Granted...since I've been sick, I haven't been able to work on mine as much as I'd like, plus throwing the holidays in there...Really messed me up. Trying to get back into the swing of things now...

Sural Argonus

You're very welcome. I honestly enjoyed your game a lot, and it's clear that you care about what you're making unlike a lot of other creators out there.

Thank you for the recco Belle. It truly brings a smile to my face.

PhillyGames

Don't worry about it. You don't owe me anything. :) Patreon hasn't enabled the functionality you expected for this campaign, which sucks and is a problem for everyone except the people who seek to take advantage of the system. Your post shows why it's so important that I look for patterns instead of individual instances. There are many good, valid reasons why someone might delete or lower their pledge before it's charged, after all.

I thought that when I changed my pledge from 1$ to 5$ I was being charged the difference right away so I thought it was ok to switch back to 1$ thinking you got the money anyway. Turns out i am wrong and I apologize. I support quite a few games and they dont always deliver so I mess with my pledges quite often to give to the ones deserving it. I will be more careful from now on. I will not change my pledge to Belle anymore since your game is one of my favs. I apologize for the inconvenient. I know where to get the game for free btw but I insist on helping you. Sorry and thank you.

Mouton

Yeah, not rushing it is why I'm making these changes to what I say and don't say about upcoming versions. By not overpromising, I can instead use all the time I feel is needed to polish the things I'm working on instead of having to rush ahead to complete all the things I said I would do. It's going to make the game better over time.

Quite a long post. Really shows the passion behind the project! If I may make a humble request, please don't rush anything. As much as you can, in every little aspect of the game, take your time. Believe me, as a fan and a patron I would've loved for the game to have been finished yesterday, but I don't wanna rush anything. Your game and writing have great potential and I've seen games and devs burnt out or games coming out way below expectations because of this kind of pressure. Do the game how YOU want to do it. How YOU see it in your head. And make it great! I hope this doesn't come across as negative or anything. It's just that I really love and enjoy this game so far and I would hate for things, no matter how small, to fall through the cracks. The writing is funny, erotic, genuine, and the renders are quite attractive and incredible! I don't wanna miss out on a nice little quip here or a detail in a scene there because you felt you needed to rush the game for any number of reasons. As a day time dev, I hope you know where I am coming from with this. Haven't played 0.4 yet, but I'll have time this week for a full run. I almost can't wait!
