Just started watching this myself so i'm excited to watch your reaction and opinions on it too. Plus i'm not too familiar with the games either so it's kinda nice that we are in the same boat on that. Anyways i'm really looking forward to more of your reactions to this show!

I had to upgrade to the $15 tier bc I just had no patience to wait haha I had no knowledge of the game going in, just heard so many people praising it after ep. 1 that I had to check it out. THe quality of this show is really just something else.

Part of that I think is that the game director, Neil Druckmann, is very heavily involved (and directs episode 2 iirc). He had a great philosophy re: changes and he said "if it's the same or worse, we stick with the game. If it's better, we make changes" so it's definitely not a 1:1 adaptation but what's the fun in that anyway? Like, just go watch a movie cut of the game on YT lol. Oh! And they do wear gas masks in the game because spores are a major cause of infection. They got rid of them for the show (and added the tendrils you saw coming out of the old woman's mouth) because 1. they didn't want the actors to be in gas masks constantly and 2. it's not very realistic that the spores would stay so confined to a specific place, they would spread everywhere. There are a couple changes like that that I think are made because the level of suspension of disbelief in a video game vs. live action TV is very different. That scene you were talking about looking like stealth is in fact a stealth level and it BRUTALLY punishes you for trying to rush through it. I wasn't used to playing stealth in games when I first played it and it took me forever to get through that part lol Anyway, sorry for the long af comment. Special interest brain kind of popped off!
