The more times I watch this series, the more I pay attention to the nuanced performance of the actor playing Da On and how the writing portrays such a complex character. Yes, the unrequited love is done amazingly re: Tae Kyung and Shin Wo respectively, but that is something we have seen a lot of. A portrait like this of someone in the closet who is NOT brave and not able to deal with his feelings and the expectations of the world tends to be more overlooked. Dramas more often feature the brave coming out stories with the courage sparked by love. Here we can see how fear makes someone who facing that love instead acts like a heartless villain, when it's just a scared kid who can't cope.
