Getting the Body He Wants, Part 1

January

According to my gym’s online appointment book, 42 new members have signed up for my circuit training classes – that’s quite an upswing since last year when only 14 signed up after New Year’s. I was confident those new photos of me on the website would help, but I had no idea they would help this much. I am looking pretty good in those shots, however, and my abs were really poppin’ that day, so I guess it was worth the money I spent.

Now, 42 is a terrific number for new sign-ups, but the overwhelming majority are going to be “resolution” clients, and some of them will be gone within the next few weeks (maybe even days). They all start out with the best of intentions, but the realities of their jobs, kids, and other responsibilities often make it too difficult to get to the gym regularly…or, they don’t see the results they want instantly and just give up. I keep trying to tell them that consistency is the key to getting the bodies they want, but I know that’s easier said than done.


February

One month in and I’m down to 35 new clients, which isn’t too bad. Usually, I see a much steeper drop-off rate after the first few weeks, so I’m impressed with these folks’ tenacity.

It’s usually at this point I start to remember their names. I know that sounds bad, but I teach 10 different classes throughout the week with over 100 people, and I just cannot recall them all. I’m actually much better at remembering bodies than I am at faces, especially when I have some good-looking guys as clients. Do I regularly date the guys who take my classes? I try not to. Emphasis on the “try.” I’m only human, though, and sometimes the urge to sleep with the really hot ones is too much for me. Plus, I’m a trainer, not a teacher, and there is no trainer code of ethics when it comes to this area.

Of the new clients, I would say Dirk and Ben have both caught my eye. Dirk is about 10 years older than me – somewhere around 40 – but he’s got a solid body, great head of hair, and a killer smile. I’m not sure if he bats for my team yet, but he puts out a strong “daddy” vibe that I cannot ignore. Dirk is in good shape, somewhere around 5’10” and 175 lean pounds, and he’s trying to stay that way and avoid a middle age spread.

Ben’s younger than me by a few years – I’m 30, and he’s 27 – and he’s got a handsome face, smooth dark skin, a quick wit, and he is definitely gay. His body is a little…mmm, I guess you would call it lumpy, but he has been working hard in the gym to change it. He even admitted so signing up for the class specifically because of how I looked on the website, but I’m not sure if he just wants to look like me or hook up with me. I’ll have to do a little more digging.


March

I’ve managed to keep 32 of my new clients from the first of the year, so that’s the good news. And the even better news is that almost all of them have made significant progress the last few months – they’re losing weight, gaining muscle, and feeling a lot better. The only exception is Burt. Don’t get me wrong – Burt’s working hard in the class and seems to put forth the effort with exercise, but his weight keeps climbing. He’s 6 feet tall and started back in January at 240 pounds, and now he’s at 260 – and trust me, it ain’t muscle. Burt’s stomach and ass have both grown larger since he started working out, so he must be inhaling a huge amount of calories when he’s not here. Either that or something’s really wrong with his metabolism. But he swears he’s doing everything I have coached him on, so hopefully he’ll make some progress this spring.

Who’s been doing the best? Well, that is certainly Ben. Turns out he played football and baseball when he was younger, and he had some very, very good muscle memory, because I don’t know of anyone who has changed so much so quickly. I described him as a bit lumpy when he first joined – Ben had 210 rather soft pounds on a 5’9” frame – but he has shed all the flab and replaced it with muscle, so now I’d call him jacked. Dare I say that his arms almost look as good as mine, and his chest is coming along nicely. And the ass – man, it is TIGHT! Now I’m the one who cannot stop staring. I told Ben the other day that if he keeps putting in the effort, he’s definitely going to get the body he wants.

Only one little bit of bad news this month – turns out Dirk is 100% straight. I thought sure he was gay, or at least bi, but he swears he only likes the ladies. Sigh. Some lass out there is going to be very lucky to snag him.

Ben is freakin’ unreal. The man put on another 20 pounds of muscle this past month and now sits at an extremely hot 230 pounds of muscle. Things are back on track for me as a trainer. I didn’t lose any more of my new clients to Ben, and those that have stuck with me are making progress. Dirk is looking better than ever, Mary’s lost over 40 pounds, and Isaac just did his first pullup ever. So pretty good news for the most part.

The only straggler continues to be Burt. He’s gained another 20 pounds since March and is now topping the scale at 280, which is really overweight for someone 6 feet tall. His gut is rounder and fuller than ever, and since he hasn’t upgraded to larger-sized clothes since he started his fitness journey, the big ball jiggles out from under the bottom hem of his t-shirts every time he moves around (Especially when he’s on the treadmill). As a result, Burt is constantly tugging down on the hem to try and cover up the fresh flab and his very deep belly button. So yeah, Burt deserves my full attention. I’m going to really focus on his needs for the rest of the year to ensure he gets the body he wants.
