Dear Mr. Fix-it: From Sam to Samson

Dear Mr. Fix-it,

I need your help in the worst way. My boyfriend Sam and I have been together for 5 years, and I love him very much. We met during our senior year of college and were about the same size back then – I was 5’11 and 150 pounds, and he was 5’9” and 140 pounds. Both of us loved running, so we would jog together on the college’s track or along some of the nearby hiking trails.

After graduating, we moved to a big city and got an apartment together. Running outdoors was harder in this environment, so we joined a gym to use the treadmills. We both also started enjoying lifting weights, first with the exercise machines and then moving over to the free weight area.

The problem is that while I have managed to bulk up a lot – going from 150 to 240 pounds – Sam has been stuck at 140. He has tried increasing his calories, gulping down protein powder, and following every workout routine we could find, but his body refuses to grow.

He doesn’t seem jealous of my success, but I know he’s frustrated, especially when then other guys at the gym check out my body and beg me to flex for them. And it’s causing issues in bed, too – he has a hard time adjusting to my bulk, and I think it just makes him feel worse.

Is there anything you can do to help? I love my new body and don’t want to stop working out, but I don’t want it to cause any more problems for Sam either.

I’ll definitely do what I can to help Sam change from scrawny to brawny. It sounds like he’s quite a hardgainer, so it may be genetic. Let’s look at his parents…OK, I’m seeing where he gets it from. Now let’s see what changes Sam will go through based on these alterations.
