Canadian Catch Out

Since I discovered trainhopping, riding across Canada has been a dream. The untouched nature, the long double-stack container trains, and the vast, remote landscapes seemed incredible. Last September, after saving up for a while, I finally turned that dream into reality, thanks to you guys, and prepared to cross Canada from Montreal all the way to Vancouver. A stretch of roughly 4,800 km. Initially, I planned to go solo, but as it happened, a Canadian rider I’d been following on Instagram was nearby with the same plan. We decided to meet up and ride together.

After I arrived, I spent some time wandering around Montreal, getting a feel for the city’s vibe. It was cool to be in a place I’d only known from movies and videos. Jet lag hit hard, especially since I’d barely slept the night before my early-morning flight. After wandering around in the city and buying some ridiculously overpriced groceries, I headed to the outskirts where Jay, the Canadian rider, was waiting with a girl. She was friendly and fun to hang with, though she didn’t want to be filmed.

We headed to a catch-out spot and waited for our train. A few hours passed, and then, dark silhouettes emerged from the treeline, it was a group of other riders. That’s when it really hit me: trainhopping in Canada was a whole different game than in Europe. There were more riders, and the catch out spots were well established. But they were friendly. We chatted, shared food, and swapped stories. They told us they’d let us catch the train first, since we’d arrived before them. Nine people on one train is just asking to be spotted.

Around midnight, we heard the rumble of an approaching engine and picked up the radio communications between our train and RTC (Rail Traffic Control). It was our train. We split up, found a ride, and climbed on. Finally being on a North American freight train felt special—surreal, almost. The high speed carried us through the night, and after an hour of soaking it in, I crawled into my sleeping bag and drifted off. The adventure has begun.

I hope you'll enjoy!

Hey if you ever did any riding in the states, would highly recommend Colorado. Some of the highest and most beautiful routes in the country (:

chloe

Hey! Absolutely love your content, but with the current attacks across YouTube with their new detection system, will a different, more secure site be used as a backup for this?

[UNKNOWN] Seraph

Amazing video! Hope you enjoyed my home country <3 Excited to see the rest of the journey and if you ended up in my home city as well, keep it up!

Ben Chenier

Let's go!! Hope you enjoyed your trip here. Wasn't sure it you'd make it here!

HeyGuyBuddy

Canada is pretty

Max Von Ardelean

I'm a dad now so my travelling days are very much on pause. But these videos take me places I cannot go. I love the random shots out windows of the trains. Gives of such a unique north American feel that I haven't experienced since my youth.

Probably way too late, and you’re home and editing, but if by chance you’re in America still, this video will give you some context regarding laws in Canada (like freight hopping) and how to handle any situations you may find yourself in. The biggest thing is. “Do not speak”. https://youtu.be/99EBOF7sFQA?si=J9LFdbZY4sQx1ywt Obviously this is about knives and you like trains, but the similarities are bountiful.

Just watched it through on YT, Poison. Great fun. You were so near me in Toronto a couple of times. Looking forward to Part 2 as you head north into my part of Ontario. Cheers, John

When I saw North American trains I got excited, and then selfishly let down when I realized it was our friendly neighbors to the north. Next time!

Dude, the stairs thing is GOLD WTF? Your videos are changing my life, I really enjoy them. I supported out of a selfish need for more! Be safe

Bet you are feeling so much doing this ride, to do a big mission overseas is great pleasure in life. I also travelled to North America to do a 4000km dream hike and can relate to what you are seeing with the strange but familiar culture

Jack N

come down to Baltimore sometime man, I wanna get you a mean chicken box.

Hey idk if it’s too late to let you know but I heard the cp line to Vancouver is more scenic compared to the cn line

Alex hill

It's so awesome to watch this and know all these spots.

Headfood

Am I tripping or did Gifgas eat some blue stuff he found in a bag next to a bin. I am not sure if eating an unknown substance is very sensible, but then again he is mad train surfer so it might be normal for him.

Ian M

It's like new Europe right. not better than the original though.

Asher

Happy Halloween, Poison!!! Can't wait to watch this masterpiece!!! Thank you, John

John Fisher

Nice! Train hopping is seriously illegal here. I got arrested and seriously fined ($1500) with 30 days in jail in 1984 after multiple arrests and beatings at the hands of the CP/CN Police. Happy Hallowen!!

Brian Stauffer

Thank you! I will let you know if I'm in the neighborhood.

Thomas Verschueren

Happy Halloween! :)
