Making some progress on the Grissaille front.
Here's a picture of the model I'm working from. For this one I'm just painting it from life. So I have this model set up and lit and I just look at that when I'm stuck on something.

The fabric is tough Because it's reflective and foldy. There's a lot of complicated shapes. The values don't announce themselves as clearly as "Light and Shadow" because there's so much reflecting light that works its way into the folds which are in the shadow areas.
My strategy to deal with painting complicated things like this is to simplify it as much as I can. Squint my eyes to see the biggest values. And -specifically for this one-remember that the reflected areas in the shadows are still darker than the areas that are directly in the light.
Painting it from life has been super enlightening. Because when I get stuck and I look at it from a different angle, I can see how my eyes are deceiving me.
You can really loose that when painting from a photo. You believe the deception a little bit more because "it's right there in the photo." Especially with complicated things like this shiny fabric.
I've been doing some "spring cleaning" in the choir this month. I started the Choir A year ago this month. I really need to get more people in here. Given how much time I spend making stuff for this. And given how much I enjoy spending my time doing that.
But anyways. I've been working on that. So I haven't been able to get to my art life and lives or my Intro to Drawing Bad Art this month. I have topics ready for both of those videos but I just haven't been able to get to it. I'll try and crank out a bunch of videos next month because I have a stock pile of footage at this point.
But anyways. I'm thinking about doing a real time watercolor demo for those Grotesque portraits I've been doing.
So if any of you are brave enough to send me a head shot of you to paint I'd be happy to do it for the demo!

I'm listening to Black Sabbath and giving my cat some treats. She's a messy eater.
Electric Funeral has some of the coolest lyrics.
Robot minds of robot slaves
Lead them to atomic graves
Plastic flowers, melting sun
Fading moon falls upon
Dying world of radiation
Victims of man's frustration
Burning globe of obscene fire
Like electric funeral pyre
Have Fun
Goodnight Sweeties
