Mask submissions

Here’s the mask submissions. I’ll be announcing the new prompt tomorrow. So go vote if you haven’t.

The featured mask is Tia’s. This is what she said:

“

I started out with a thrifted porcelain mask for the base.

I then created a base with some tape and tissue paper to get the form I wanted and began to sculpt & carve the details with my apoxie sculpt.

Once that was dry, I painted it with acrylic paint.

I mounted the mask on a frame I found a long time ago, again at a thrift shop, and adorned it with some moss, a twig and shelf mushrooms I hand sculpted & painted.

I made a secret door in the back to allow a set of miniature LED lights to sit inside to give it a little touch of life!

My mask is based on a swamp shrunken head that was found laying on the murky grounds of a mossy bog while fireflies burrow deep into the eye sockets, laminating them with their eerie chartreuse glow!”

Here’s my mask. You’ve probably heard me yap about it enough.

Here’s Joanne’s mask. Here’s what she said about it:

“

This was made for the lead dancer that couldn't wear much in the way of makeup because of skin problems. It had to be able to stay on while he did acrobatics and the main sets and sculptures had dragons, demons and such within the themes. You will see there is a cut out in the nose, mainly because on final fitting it would rub when he was upside down so although it made it look a little messy it worked. With the performers dreadlocks and black and red paint on lower half of the face it did look really good.

Made with mid rock, plaster, moulded onto face and head then trimmed, finished with acrylic, gutta and stretched elastic between layers”

“this piece is an homage to Q. Hayashida, the master of using masks for story telling. in her manga Dorohedoro, the mask a character wears symbolizes their strengths, weaknesses, goals and motivations. my own mask features the most vulnerable part of a body made to look tough with spikes, teeth and horns. the metaphor for irrational emotional decisions in place of a head. crowned the lord of the flesh with no real sense of purpose besides to stay alive and keep pumping blood. but it’s rejected that function and gained a new meaning.”

“Sooty is about a small dog from my childhood who bit me on the face when I was patting him.

Musk is for the colours.

Cheeky is because it is cheeky. The first layer is very cheeky but how will anyone guess?”
