Sleep with a Side of Sabotage/ Compositional Sketches Timelapse

This drawing helped me see some of the missing pieces that I need to gather references for. I realized I needed to figure out the hands, costume and mask.

Another thing I noticed about this video is that it demonstrates one of the potential pitfalls of drawing from reference photos: just copying the photo.

That's part of why I drew the same exact thing twice. I was just copying the photo. So that's something to be aware of. References are to help not to be copied.

James Gurney suggests sketching purely from imagination and then letting those mental sketches guide the whole process, including the photo reference stage.

So as I go in to the next photo shoot for these references I'm going to keep that in mind.

Sorry about the bad audio in this video. I recorded it on my phone. Just experimenting to see if that was an option for quick and dirty sketches like this.

Happy January 29th everybody

I've gotten back into the bad habit of looking at my phone when I wake up.

During covid I started turning off my phone and putting it in a drawer at night. Just waking up with an old fashioned alarm clock.

Then that shifted into using my phone's alarm again and just not checking social media.

And now it's back to just go down depressing rabbit holes of bad news and people's dumb opinions first thing in the morning.

I dropped off the Cave at the gallery.

Everyone gathered around and looked at it and said nice work.

I feel awkward in situations like that. It doesn't make sense because that's the reaction I want when I'm painting it. Then I get the reaction and I get all shy.

It was weird to leave the painting there. and it's weird to not have it in my room right now. I don't usually feel that way when dropping off my art.

I learned that when Rene Magritte died, he had an unfinished painting on his easel. He painted in the kitchen. His wife Georgette left the painting there on the easel in the kitchen until she died almost 20 years later.

When I woke up this morning I thought "sleep with a side of sabotage." Whatever that means. It seemed revolutionary at the time.

Have Fun

Goodnight Sweeties
