The Map, two masks and some hands
Added 2024-01-24 23:53:48 +0000 UTCMany of the earlier mask thumbnails I did were a little too wild for the purposes of this painting.
The thing about masks is that they are designed to disguise, In many cases they were used to symbolically transform.
I love them all. That's why I drew them.
But after looking at the original study again, I realized the mask needed to be more simple. More of a basic face.
So I sketched some basic Venetian masks. these are just copies from references online. I'm trying to figure out a way to make them a little less...I don't know...Eyes Wide Shut-y.
I was thinking about this piece and trying to figure out something about it. And I got another one of those sudden realizations where I just saw it all at once. The whole thing just fell in to place. The same thing happened with the Cave. So I drew another quick thumbnail of the sketch and labeled some of the stuff I was thinking, wrote some notes about the lighting. I call this one the map.

Today I'm just working. There's nothing on my mind except writing this art lives video.
All other thoughts about boring stuff like: how I have to get my oil changed, frame my painting, come up with a lesson plan for work tomorrow, take my painting to the gallery, the stack of unopened mail.
It all sounds like "blah blah blah" in my head so I'm not going to try and articulate it here.
My masks came today. I'm excited about that. I will try and start my prompt tonight. I think I have my idea and I'm excited for it.
Late last night I ate too many chips and salsa and I think it gave me a headache.
My cat is eating treats off of a Rene Magritte art book. I'm going to take a video of it.
