A rest in hills where monsters live

Another Decalcomania piece I did for the Intro to Drawing Bad Art Lesson. I think this piece was subconsciously influenced by the Led Zeppelin biography I've been listening to. They go off to the country side to write and record some of their albums. And the William James biography I read last month.

This piece would also work as an inner landscape.

One of the things I love about the decalcomania technique is that many times you don’t know where it’s going to end up. You just start drawing what you see. Sometimes you don’t even see much in it. You just start and then at a certain point realize what the drawing is.

I really like this quote by Max Ernst, my favorite artist who used this technique, about his approach to art:

“The first way to see is with your eyes open looking out at the world. At reality. At what is objective. The second way to see is with your eyes closed. Focused on your inner world. I believe that the best way to see is with one eye open, focused on the reality of the world, and one eye closed focused on the inner world. The result is a synthesis of subjective and objective.

Two of his paintings in particular, Swampangel and the Eye of Silence, merge realism and the abstract/surrealist technique of decalcomania in the most masterful and subtle way.

Happy December 21st Everybody:

I finished editing the two videos I've been working on.

But of course in the process of working on them had like 4 or 5 ideas for other videos to do.

Those will have to be saved for early next year.

I like to take the last week of the year to kind of get organized.

I'll probably do a last video of the year for the whole choir though. It's been an interesting year for me and my art so I want to sort out my thoughts on all of that.

I've been eating too much candy lately.

I have to wrap gifts.

It's been raining hard here in Los Angeles.

Have Fun, Goodnight Sweeties

Such an interesting piece and I believe it is going to be yet another good one, seeing things emerge is always is always fascinating. Ernst, easily recognisable and my favourite artist by far, so glad you use him for reference points.
