I've honestly been getting frustrated with my painting process lately.
It's so slow. I've been doing all this preliminary work in photoshop, which makes the paintings stronger and more efficient in the end, but I spend more and more time drawing in photoshop. Which, honestly, I don't like.
So I was designing my piece for this month's prompt in photoshop. Getting bored with it. Feeling like I'm not painting enough. And I thought, "I'm just going to paint something."
Imagine that.
I splashed some paint on the canvas and just started painting what I saw.
I used to do little monster portraits like this all the time (4x5 inches) and I decided I was just going to paint one in one sitting, Alla Prima.
I filmed the process so I'll talk more about it there. But Alla Prima just means "All at once." Instead of doing the underpainting, and grayscale painting and then adding the colors in layers, I mixed all the colors and applied them as I went.
Anyways. It was very refreshing. And I ended up with this nice little cyclops guy that I kind of like. So I'm going to try and add more painting like this into my routine.
