Finished Commission- Lust and Remorse

I filmed a ton of footage for this so I'll eventually make a video the process. But here's a quick little break down.

First, this was a commission based on a painting that stemmed out of my perspective lessons I did for the Intro to Drawing Bad Art Course. So this is the fruits of the choir! And I want to thank everyone for being here.

I started sketching boxes and turning them into organic shapes

Then I traced what I sketched, and kind of adjusted the shapes to make them a little more satisfying or dynamic or whatever. Just feeling it out.

Then I did a very loose gouache value study over the original drawing. Almost to just do a bad version of the painting.

Iterations

I scanned the traced version of the painting and put it into photoshop. I traced it again, getting those shapes more dynamic and all that stuff. Iterating.

I did another value study in photoshop, really trying to clarify the lighting scheme and forms.

I looked at a lot of references including these works by these artists:

I also looked at some photo references of art models that I have, and eventually just used one of the actual photos for the skin reference.

I added a background, using an old painting by Jan Van Goyen for the sky reference.

I decided to add some flowers where that box under the figures arm was, but by the time I was painting them in photoshop I figured I should just get on with the painting.

and this became the reference that I used for the painting.

I used a projector to trace the drawing from photoshop onto the panel.

The panel was already toned burnt Sienna. I started painting the underpainting with burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, then gray scale eventually.

Started glazing colors, added the highlights, painted the flowers, and a few hours later, I had this painting. Lust and remorse.
