Well, for me, I see him making low grade enemies constantly. These are people he'll potentially need to work with for centuries. They will certainly not work with him if they can help it, and these people mostly strike me as the long term planning type. He's hiding behind his powerful friends now, but that just means they have to be subtle or wait. They certainly don't need to kill Jason to make his leadership very difficult.

Yeah, he's a giant pain in the ass, and makes getting things done much more complicated for others most of the time, I 100% agree. I guess I'm just using a different definition of "enemy" than you are. All of those folks dislike him more than they might have if his personality were less abrasive, but I don't see any of them who didn't come into the interaction with negative intentions to start with (like the conservative faction's folks in Yaresh who were opposed to him from the beginning) taking active steps to hurt, kill, or interfere with him going forward, and that's what I think of as an enemy, not just someone who wants nothing to do with him

Yeah I'm leaning towards this line of thinking. For the reasons that they give and Jason's avatar of doom I believe makes him a huge threat to the astral beings and such. I think they are going to try and lash him somehow. You bring up a very good point any friend of Dawn would not call Jason a pet. Unless it's dawn is actually working against Jason which I highly doubt.

Hmm. His behavior in Rimaros, then the elf city, then organizing to go into the transformation zone stands out the most to me. Most of the time he's fine, but he is very bad to the Adventurer's society liaison. Multiple times when there's a big serious meeting, he comes in distracted or can't keep his mouth shut and then he has to threaten to not participate or relies on his "I'm the special boy, this won't work without me" status to insist on being in charge. At minimum he uses it to get away with mocking or insulting his coworkers. This repeatedly has other adventures talking to Danielle Geller or Arabella Remore for advice. He's multiple times unsettled bystander silver rankers. It's the blowhard administrators and the mother of that boy he soul struck who really became unnecessary enemies. And the leader of the adventuring team attached to his. I've seen him consistently unsettle, distract, derail, or undermine fellow adventurers. He's especially bad with administrators, as if organizing people and funding isn't 90% of what makes adventuring possible for the people who do go out in the field.

So whatever method they use to control the Zithis Carrow Vayel would come into play, which would explain why they didn’t want Jason to know the details of how it worked. This ability to control would then explain why the Keeper of Moments is getting involved, since he only cares about keeping Jason from messing with time travel. Side note: I don’t think Dawn and Raythe are still good friends, at least to the extent they implied. I think Jason is going to realize this, since they called Jason Dawn’s pet. That’s when he became serious, so it’s probably when his BS-detector went off. Also, question, if the original builder was sanctioned, where did he go? Was the sanctioning just a stripping off of his Will?

His conversational skills are absolutely lacking in focus, yes. Jason gives off serious ADHD vibes at the best of times. And he’s in no way qualified to be a cosmic ruler. (I hope my crack about the store was recognizable as a joke) but who is? Your description though, of him constantly turning uncomfortable allies into enemies. I’ve read and reread these books far too many times now for my own mental health and I can’t think of an example of that beyond the depths of book five when he was at his absolute worst. Even then, while he pushed away potential allies instead of setting aside all the reasons he had not to trust them again, he didn’t manage to alienate the Network enough to stop them coming back to ask for his help. Can you give me an example of what you’re describing? Because it seems like I’ve missed something big

Don't get me wrong, Jason is entertaining as heck, and I enjoy reading about him. But he's been causing problems for earnest functionaries who are just doing their jobs and can't change the policy. And his attitude in group meetings tends to be "let's take up lots of conversational space on nonsense tangents, during a crisis situation" and when people react to that by wondering if he's qualified to be there, he threatens them and insists on being in charge.

With respect, Jason disrespects people all the time. He doesn't know when to stop being flippant and ends up mocking serious moments when other people are grieving or in crisis and they need something other than floral shirt wearing dude. But he can't read the room or imagines that the trappings of politeness are pointless, so he scatters the image of competence that adventurers use to reassure the people around them. He despises the kind of focused presentation that allows adventurers to get through meetings quickly, without causing needless social problems, so that they can avoiding wasting time at the organization stage and go rescue people faster. Instead of learning how to be socially professional himself, he can't resist causing so many problems that he needs to rely on threats or the fact that he is essential to smooth over his relationship with the people he needs to work with (who are outside of his own team). Jason is at times barely able to work with people who generally like him and share his own goals. He habitually alienates people who he dislikes, but are actually on his side (they're just too stuffy or authoritarian for him). And he reacts to minor disagreements about the value of being polite or on topic by either completely derailing the conversation or escalating to the point that he's turned "person on my side who I don't get along with" into "someone in my way, who I threaten into cooperating with me." Minor annoyances who he needs to work with, but he disagrees with their way of life, he effectively turns into active enemies all the time. But he still needs to work with them, so he terrifies them into submission while acting goofy and unpredictable. Jason's a fun guy with a good heart. But he needs much better people skills and the desire to live up to the job before I'd be comfortable with him ruling. A lack of ambition is not the only qualification needed for leadership - it's just a moral shorthand that relies on the theory that actions taken with good intentions can never cause harm. But if there was an easy solution, someone would have taken it before it reached the executive desk. Leadership requires specialized skills, and at minimum an understanding of the organization and people you will be leading. Jason is going to generate so many enemies that he gets assassinated before he reaches diamond rank.

I totally see this being a 40 book series, we are ten or eleven books in, I mean book ten just got published and book eleven just got finished un edited unless I'm mistaken we are just starting book twelve and it literally feels like we have only covered like a tenth of the story over all. So you can forgive me for thinking this will be a saga of 25 to fifty books. Plus Shirt publishes three to four books a year this should keep him busy for the next decade I hope.

Here’s a thing, though: Jason disrespects authority, he doesn’t disrespect people, even people with authority. Look at this chapter—he’s being his usual flippant jerky self to the two ultra-powerful diamond rankers, but when one of them is in pain, he reaches out to help. Doesn’t make a big deal of it, just treats him with decency as a person. As far as ability with people, he’s theoretically very good at manipulating people, although he’s moved away from doing so to a great extent. And he has a little bit of previous management experience, don’t forget. Those office supply store employees can be brutal!

Bridge - introduced in book 4, still not wrapped up. Sundered Throne - book 6? Carmen comes to collect Shako... now we're in book 11 and finding out that the plan is for him to sit on it. This is more of the end of the beginning not the beginning of a rushed end.

Your second suspicion is nonsense. Ofc they waited, no reason to tell somebody a potential future when one little death without resurrection changes everything. You only tell someone sth like this if you believe he will actually make it that far. In this circumstance it means Jason had to be successful in claiming a soul forge above all else.

Everyone's saying that it's wrapping up to fast. I don't think so. Something WILL come up. Some problem with maybe the messengers trying to get someone on the Throne first and disrupting the people who attempt to make the connection before them, or maybe the GABs are looking to trick Jason so they can grab the power themselves or maybe making a connection to the Throne is only the first step in a long process or maybe Jason suspecting these things will refuse and wait until he ranks up to Diamond and achieve true transcendance so he can research it more and be more powerful to resist outside interferance or maybe he needs to make the connection now but can't use the power until he ranks up to Diamond. PLUS the Vampire Thadwick plot line and the purity relic that can purge monster core residue plotline is TOTALLY unresolved. Something will come up and I think we've still got a couple more Books until the series concludes

I disagree. We're up to ~10 books now and I think the Sundered Throne arc has been building for an appropriately long time. I don't think that the story will wrap up in the rest of book 11. I think it reads like either getting a connection to the throne is only the first step or Jason will refuse due to his power hungry tendencys or something bad will happen along the way. Maybe the GABs will attempt to control him when he sits on the Throne and use him as a proxy to in turn, control some of the thrones power and fix some of the universe (the Builder) while still retaining their autonomy. Plus there's still the bad thing that Dawn warns about after Jason connects to or attempts to connect to the throne. I think we've still got 2 books minimum before the stories conclusion. Even if this is the last book, I think 11 books is enough. We've seen Jason slog up the ranks (relative to the readers) and imo, if this is the last book, I'll be satisfied.

Just a guess, but since the whole Sundered Throne seemed obvious I've either read Shirt's mind or I'm blowing smoke up unpleasant locations (like the backseat of a VW Bug): Builder has some sort of deal with Messengers for them to get Earth. Dawn didn't expect him to be a completed Astral King before the bridge was built so she didn't expect him to be able to claim the throne yet was worried Jason trying would do something to stop messengers that would make him ineligible to sit on the Sundered Throne so she made him promise to do something she asks when she saw him again which would be to go after the throne & leave Earth to his friends who would be trying to delay the takeover with Dawn's help. Once he took the thron he'd then have the power to step in himself - but it's a longshot that he could gain the throne fast enough to save earth so that's why it was a really long shot and he needed to be as high rank as possible.

I’m actually thinking the baby builder is trying to become the throne himself. I’ve been getting the vibe for a while that the messenger-builder is actually unorthodoxy and wanted to get/become something like the throne to overthrow the Astral Kings who enslave messengers. It would be in line with classic rpgs, where the disk 1 boss was actually trying to save the world all along.

I thought about it for a couple of hours now and while it's obvious this is where the story was heading the way this was just thrown in there feels like a 90's /2000s fantasy TV series that was developed on long story arcs was just informed it won't be renewed and the show runners have decided they would rather wrap everything up than leave anything incomplete even though there's not really enough episodes left to wrap it all up correctly.

There are two factions of gab. Those that wanted to sunder the cosmic throne and those that did not. This is a precursor to a GAB conflict. Once again Jason is in way over his head. That’s why Dawn wanted Jason stronger. Just think for a moment, the builder will come after Jason, along with any of his buddies that want to keep the cosmic throne sundered. The messenger astral kings will definitely come after him especially if they think he is a weak diver rank astral king. The possibilities are too numerous to list. This is just how I imagine the story going. It was hinted at back in book nine in the battle of Yaresh. Actually, I think Shirt has been dropping these hints as far back as book one. But I might be remembering incorrectly. Time to begin my third read though of the books in preparation for this one coming out.

The thing Dawn was warning everyone to prepare for comes after the Throne. She told them they would need to be Diamond if they stood any chance to help, and this was obviously part of the plan. I think there's a big bad coming and Jason getting the Sundered Throne was one of the necessary steps to be able to face it.

I don’t know why I am shocked. The clues were there. The way his aura feels as if he’s a stern authority with rules that should not be broken, and a true protector as long as they are kept. Gordon’s intrinsic-mandate magic, the spirit domains, Carmen, the cryptic references to Originals and the Sundered Throne. I know the position isn’t likely to be becoming the “king of the cosmos” in a way that lets him leverage it politically, militarily, or in any effective manner on a small scale that would be of use to mortals, but it’s an absurd level of significance for someone of his age and power. And also seems quite dangerous. What if he gets Sundered? Very, very interesting development.

Now he just takes the next logical step. Basically, they are trying to do him like the builder. But they don’t realize they won’t have a puppet. He will do his role. Wow so fix the sundered throne then sit on it. Well vampire war and energy thadwick don't seem like big deals anymore. I think there is more unsaid here though. Mean it only took some of the GABs to kill the last guy that was the monitor of the cosmos so they can do it again. They picked a silver ranker so he is under powered for the job. He is also the person most likely to set that throne on auto and only really use the power when something had gone terribly wrong. All in all they are making the right choice.
