Hi everyone, Yames here with another transmission for you. This time around I’m going to be talking a bit more about Father Turned Me Into Trees And Rivers.
As you may know, the past couple months I’ve been laying the groundwork here and there for this game, and this month I’ve completely cleared my schedule so I could try and get this game to you by Halloween. At least so far it’s been looking like I am on track to do that. So I’m feeling pretty good about it!
So, let’s take a quick look at just a bit more of the game.
Father Turned Me Into Trees And Rivers is a horror gardening adventure game partially inspired by ideas that occur in certain cultural mythologies. The game starts with you getting drawn into a strange world by a strange being who tasks you with the cultivation of a mostly desolate landscape. Your success depends on your mastery of these methods of cultivation and your efforts towards growing the trees and rivers that the title mentions.
The body you inhabit has two forms. HARMONY FORM, where you become a long-limbed slender creature that has a belly that can hold many things required of its duties and STRIFE FORM where you take on a more compact, well-muscled, spike-covered form that is much more hardy and capable in a struggle against another.
Different actions are available depending on which form you take.
Here’s the harmony form getting water for the inhabitants of the nursery. Notice how the stomach distends the more it swallows down.
Speaking of the nursery, when you’ve planted one of your root children, you make alterations to its development. Depending on the roots you cut or don’t cut, the root child could be entirely different once it springs out of the ground.
Lastly, although the wasteland for your trees and rivers is mostly a blank canvas, there are a few things from the previous world that still remain…what secrets do these things hold? that’s for you to discover.
I’ve been really happy working on this game because I think the art style, scope. and mechanics strikes a balance between my older games and my newer ones. Certainly the very rough pixel-y look is similar to my older stuff like Water Womb World, but there’s a lot more mechanical depth and player choices to make here, a lot less linearity. Still there is a good amount of story to the game, but it’s delivered in a way that is a little more player driven.
A lot of the art in the game has also benefited from the experience I've gotten with both 2d and 3d programs. I have come a long way since the Lips Like Velum demo.
I’m still working on Plastic Spouse Interrogation by the way, it’s just most of the work that needs to be done on it is fine tuning to get it ready for you all. It’s a much different game than Father Turned Me Into Trees And Rivers, both in look and concept. Still I’m both very happy with both of them right now.
With all that being said, I am going to get back to work. I hope you all are doing well and having a nice October.
Once again, I’m infinitely grateful for your support here. I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without your patronage.
Yours In Games,
Yames
